Good video! Just lay under my hotrod tonight with your video and did the same thing. Videos like this are a life saver as getting the parts and instruction in Ireland can be a nightmare sometimes. I made sure to remember to wear goggles and the gushing ATF. I let the housing out slowly to drip into a catch can 😂 Thanks again for the upload!
I live in the UK and have recently bought a 1980 Camaro Z28, so these videos are a lifeline, as no one here knows anything about them. They all drive their shiny Euro-Boxes! I do get some good looks in the Camaro with a 454 V8 and straight through pipes ! Thanks for the video , and I will make sure I wear my safety glasses, and have a bucket ready :) cheers bud
If you start the vehicle briefly before pulling the adapter the fluid loss will be less. The converter will fill and lower the sump level. The converter drainback raises the level above the adapter.
Helpful video. You answered my question about whether fluid, and how much, might come out when I pull out the housing holding the speedo gear in. Thank you.
You’re welcome! There was a recent comment about starting the car and cycling through the gears right before pulling the housing. This is supposed to draw more of the fluid up into the torque converter and valve body so you won’t lose as much.
@@DavidJWarEagle I jack the back of the car up under the rear end to get the wheels about a foot off the ground, then set jack stands, make sure it solid, and only have about 3-4 oz of fluid drain when the housing is pulled. :)
Thanks for the info. If memory serves me, I had the car on 4 jack stands so it was level and high enough to get under it but I will keep this in mind for next time. 👍
Nice video brother , but , how did you identify the number of the tooth ?? And can you let me know how to get the right rubber you got on the housing gear at thr last ?
I counted the teeth on the gear. You should be able to find the rubber seals by searching “TH400 driven gear housing seal” and “TH400 driven gear seal.” Hope this helps.
I did count the teeth, the number is 35 the the speedometer was shaking in the gages, i did change it to 40 teeth. Everything hook up on the truck but i did not drive it yet. Is it going to be fine ? The big problem was leaking oil all the time , but now it is stopped .
Your speedometer will be wrong by changing the gear to a different number of teeth. If the speedometer was correct before then I would replace the the gear with a new one with 35 teeth to match what was there before. If the speedometer needle in the gauge is still shaking then I would try replacing the speedometer cable. I had to do that on the car in the video because one end had broken off and wasn’t fully engaging which was causing the needle to jump around. I don’t know of that will fix your problem but it’s probably worth trying since a new cable is relatively inexpensive.
@@DavidJWarEagle hi brother David , the housing and the teeth matching, i will drive the truck and check otherwise i will change the cable too thanks alot for responding 👍
Great video, the repair manual does not go into detail on this particular installation. I wonder did the adaptor housing seal prevent the transmission fluid from leaking even without the speedo cable attached?
Anthony Murphy Yes, the gear seal prevents the fluid from leaking around the gear shaft and the o-ring seal prevents leaks between the driven gear housing and the transmission case. The cable only screws on to the driven gear housing but there is no seal between the cable sheath/cable threads and the driven gear housing. Thanks for the comment and let me know if you have more questions. Thx!
That's great to know David thank you. I'm going to re- grease the speedo cable before I hook everything up. My theory is that the pinion gear teeth wear and break when there is resistance either from a dry speedometer cable or old trans fluid ingress into the cable conduit. Best regards.
I have a question about the inner seal...I used the #s on the bags from your video. The part # for the inner seal shows a black or orange seal...do you other than color if there is another difference between them?
David, I have a TH400 in my Chevy G30 van (with a Winnebago on it) and the driven gear housing looks different. It is in two pieces, attached to one another at an articulating joint that can rotate 360 degrees and with an attachment point for two wires. Any idea what that is? I haven't seen anything like it in other videos or photos I have seen. Not sure how to attache a photo or video to show you.
@@DavidJWarEagle Speedometer Cable plus the two wires. A guy on Reddit suggested it's for cruise control which, now that I think about it, is likely the answer.
widtrak77 Yes the seals should be the same as far as I know. I think you can find the seals on eBay or Amazon but you might just have to search for TH400 seals instead of the specific part number.
@@DavidJWarEagle So...I ran into a few concerns. No trouble getting out the housing but I noticed the seal that was in there bears no resemblance to the new seal. Our housings are the same part number so I'm pretty sure the new seal is correct. I'm thinking someone has been on there before maybe and used the wrong thing. Also no retaining ring😯 I'm not sure how critical that is other than holding in the seal while you push the gear through. There doesn't seem to be any groove for the ring to sit in unless it just is held in by its own tension. What do you think? Lastly I count 35 teeth on my gear. Doesn't there have to be at least 36 according to the numbers on the housing? Unless I'm counting wrong I did it three times. If you send me an address s I can send you the picture of that seal that was in there it's interesting. Anyway, did your seal installation work well?
Thanks for the feedback. I was using the rear camera on my iPhone so I couldn’t see the screen and didn’t realise I missed the shot until post production.
I thought the colors of the gears represent the number of teeth on the gear. The original gear you pulled out looked like it was green. You replaced it with a blue one. Is your speedometer still give you a correct reading?
I counted the teeth on the gear and the speedo is correct as far as I know. However, I’ll verify with GPS the next time I drive the car. I think the old gear might have been discoloored.
Hello, I have a serious problem with my vehicle. I own Mahindra thar crde 4x4 2013 model. Very often I observe the speedometer gear is getting damaged (especially when I hit a pothole). This is my 5th time I am replacing the gear. It’s 17 teeth model. I really don’t understand the root cause. I would be very grateful to you if you have an answer for this. Thanks in advance
Question. Hoping you can help. I have a 69 Chevelle with a 400 turbo transmission. The person who I bought it from rigged a speed sensor which broke. I’m trying to match it. I know it’s an auto mart part. However, would you happen to know what speed sensor and speedometer cable I would need for a GM Chrysler 400 turbo transmission?
DavidJWarEagle would you know which one you used? I am reading that the th400 have a vacuum regulator on the other side that supports the lockdown and the 300 needs to assembly to carb. Thanks again for replying
Brandon Barnes I don't know for sure but the parts look to be similar. I found some photos at the bottom of this page: www.charlietranny.com/300THM%20Parts%20For%20Sale.htm As info, I'm not affiliated with that site and I probably would not buy a used speedometer driven gear like they have listed (9-7-2017).
Yeah it’s the same it’s still leaking I don’t think I got the seal down far enough I’m gonna try again in a few days and I’ll report back my findings. If that fails I’ll try a new gear.
My driven gear had a groove worn into it which caused it to seal. Going to replace the gear today and hopefully that will finally stop my leak. Will post my findings.
Smith It's a snug fit and I had to work it out. Grab the threaded part (where the speedometer cable attaches) with your fingers and try to pull and wiggle it left and right at the same time.
You didnt get that in far enough. That should be flush with the housing. I just did mine yesterday. A good idea is gently turn your drive shaft to make the gears mesh. No follow up? Mine still leaks. I didnt inspect my speedo gear. Gotta pull it back apart.
The tooth count location is on the housing and you line up the mark on trans casing so that you get full contact between the plastic cable gear and the metal transmission gear. If you dont have full contact it can slip causing speedometer to be off and can also strip the plastic gear.
