Hi everyone, we decided fit the MGB gearbox as we thought the triumph box wouldn't be up to the hammer we plan on giving the GT when its done. I'm talking several passes in the lake district kind of hammer. And also we ended up fitting a MGB crank into our engine, so the triumph input shaft wouldn't fit anyway. And lets face it, who doesn't love an over drive switch ON TOP OF THE GEARKNOB. We literally cannot wait to use it. So excited. Also Triumph OD boxes are crazy expensive whereas the B box was £120! Glad you all like our efforts. Looking forward to getting some paint on the underside. And also giving poor old Simon a break. He'll be on chief tea duty shortly. If only he knew how to make a good cuppa!
@@CCC_Matt in MGBs the o/d switch on the gear lever knob is known to cause problems with shorts at the point where it enters the gearbox and gets flexed a lot even causing fires at times. Personally I would fit a fixed switch somewhere else.
Thanks for the heads up. The wiring has been repaired at that point, so I will look for a proper flexible solution, something that is designed to be flexible. There will be something out there. Definitely keeping a gear knob switch, they are so cool!
I'm a Ford guy through and through bt love watching this. Can't believe how much rust you're having to deal with for a car that was only on the road 9-10 years!! (Unless I misunderstood the history!)
I'm proud you're finished scrapping it's bottom !! After wings and sills my 1300 marina pickup needed its bottom scrapping !! Back in 89 . It was nappy brown . Cheers for waking sleeping gremlins .
Thanks again for the video, what an incredible big project the Marina is, but you guys are really making it work, should last for at least another 40 years😊
I really enjoyed watching the videos,, a lot more detail than some show. Enjoyed the banter, at least you did not have the strikes that Longbridge had but I think you had more tea breaks lol
The 1.8;Marina really needs an overdrive . Memories of the Marinss screaming for another gear on the motorway still.add to the pleasure of switching in the overdrive on our MGB.
Great video, as always. We had an Allegro Estate in the early 80s, it was brown obviously. That said our family were big BL/Rover fans with the immediate family at some point or other having 5 Metros, Montego, 2 Rover 800s (MK1 and MK2, both Sterlings), Rover 620SLi, aforementioned Allegro, Rover SD1 3500, Rover 216 (SD3), Rover 216SLi (R8), 3 Rover 200/25s (R3 and newer).
Nice collection of BL stuff. We've all got a Rover R8 each, and one of the first projects we bought was a Maestro Race car. It may be our next BL project.
I have at various times fitted a Laycock J Type (from a Triumph Spitfire 1500) to the standard gearbox and more latterly a Ford Type 9 to my Marina Coupe. The O/D required the transmission tunnel raising by 50mm, but the Type 9 will slot in with no body mods. To raise the tunnel, I split the tunnel down the middle and folded the sides up and then welded a new lid on the top. I would strongly suggest that you open the transmission tunnel first and fit your engine and gearbox option to mount the gearbox tail at the right height for the propshaft, then make up and weld on the new transmission tunnel top to align the gearstick hole.
Good tips there Chris. That's what we do when we fit type 9s to Anglias. Some people note where the new gearstick hole should be and cut out a rectangle, including the existing gearstick hole and rotate it 180 degrees and weld back in. We've been in talks with Simon McOwan as he's got a converted shell and shortened prop. You guys at the Marina club have been great!
I fitted a spitfire overdrive gearbox into an MG midget 1500 years ago. The base gearbox looks the same as the marina, if you could get one it may save moving the gearstick, you would need to stretch the tunnel it for the overdrive, i used a scissor jack if i remember correctly!
As I understand it, the Marina introduced the BL “single rail’ gearbox that was later adopted by various Triumphs replacing the “3 rail” gearboxes used in Heralds, Spitfires, Vitesses and GT6s as they were replaced or modernised in the early 70s. So the Spitfire Toledo and Dolomites went single rail, and then also the Midget 1500 got it together with the Triumph engine from the Spitfire 1500. So a single rail gearbox and J-type overdrive from a Dolomite 1850 could probably have been made to fit easier than an old MGB gearbox and OD….
As all the Marinas were fitted with Triumph gearboxes from factory I imagine it would be easier to fit a D or J series overdrive from a Spitfire to the box rather than an MGB unit. May need an adaption to the gearstick aperture and no need to change the Bellhousing.
Great to see an update , and wheel trim cruelty has extended to the whole trim family 😂 I know it's not BL bloodline but would it be easier to fit a Ford type 9 five speed box? The other five speed box is the sherpa but believe that's a fairly big unit. Is that same box as TR7 and SD1 LT77? Cheers Russ
The wheel trims 😂..Doing a fine job fellas the floor obviously needed some love but considering how old that car is it’s in no worse shape than my 2001 escort van ( it’s probably a bit better lol ) 👍
I think I’m psychic I knew them hub caps were going to be blown off that panel😂….. or am I a psycho……. Any way I like the allegro estate as well…. Good choice if you go ahead👌🏽😎
@@CCC_Matt Nice car. Really looking forward to seeing that on the road. Would love one myself, but I already donate vast sums of capital to the charity case that is my T5.
That's a very shiny (in places) belly on the Marina. Better than factory! Love that letter. Brilliant. Is the gearbox swap worth all the hassle? This Month i've seen a four door marina and a Coupe yesterday. Both horrid green. Empty teapot? OMG!
Why did you decide not to get it sandblasted? There are companies out there who can do it without damage. I had it done here in Central Scotland and there was no damage whatsoever. This is still the best way to prepare, I would not use the chemical dip or the burning. Perhaps you’ve explained in the videos, I’ve not checked. I owned a marina when they were current and it was about as unremarkable as any car I ever owned. Great heater. Huge boot. Great clutch judder, paintwork fell off in sheets, no room in front footwells, incredibly noisy. Dubious front suspension. Simple and easy to maintain.
We did mention in the video that we will be using the pot blaster in a future video. We can't use the pot blaster in the workshop because of the mess, so when we've finished the welding we will get it into the smaller workshop or outside so we can blast it.
Don't do it tried and pain in the arse to do. better to use a dolomite 1850 overdrive box (which is a version of the single rail longbridge gearbox) swap the bell housings over and the input shaft if you want to use the marina clutch or use the dolomite friction plate, bodge/engineer it to fit. will need to shorten the prop by 40mm
We are in talks with someone who's car has had the conversion and has a shortened prop. The engine has been rebuilt with the mgb crank so there's no turning back now!
I've missed the Marina episodes! That thing has more holes than a Huddersfield whorehouse!😂 It's great to see the progress. When you finish it, will you do it in the original colour? I always thought a v8 version would be immense.

Your doing the car proud and i continue to enjoy watching its progress. I think you have the best channel on you tube.
Thank you!
I think this has been my favourite episode so far, bloody love the genuine friendship between you guys.
Thank you. We appreciate that.

No you're perfectly correct. It was 7ish years when it was parked up. Thanks for watching!
We have a mk2 XR2 that is pretty high up on the list for the CCC love next.
After a pair of 1300GT's tho
Really enjoyed that - even the choice of music during the high speed Simon segment was spot-on (very Todd Terje 👍)
Thank you!
Golly mine was rotting away 40 years ago amazing any steel left

Keep up the good wheel trim protecting duty’s lady’s!!!
The Swiss-Cheese Moritz Margarina again ... Thanks for showing the progress.
Good job guys, I've seen a lot worse undersides, that isn't bad, lots of small repairs, I like the MGB gearbox Idea, looks a lot of work, good luck.
Thank you!
Wow, thats some serious cleaning going on , going to be a great car when you finish
It was hard work to get it to that stage. Matt deserves a medal.
Well done on the welding on the floor is coming on well the 5th gear will be great thing to do

Oh we definitely have more tea breaks. Thanks for watching!
Hi, I’d just like to say thanks for my Marina prize draw mug for enduring that very long and presumably now deleted video a while ago. Regards Martin
Haha! No problem. I hope it hasn't started leaking yet ;-).
Yes, we removed it as it was getting a lot of bad comments.
Ahhhh back to normal 😊

Thanks for posting

@@crap_car How about an Allegro saloon but converted to a hatchback as Harris Mann had originally envisaged the design should have been?

With the MGB box, you may find that the gearstick will be super close to the handbrake lever, requiring that to be moved back a little.
(Our) Simon spotted that when we were measuring up 👍🏻
As soon as I saw those hubcaps I knew what was happening with them 😂
You’ll upset the “Imbeciles”
Top work chaps 👌

Was a nitchy 3 rd gear selection common to them all or was I unlucky in the 2 marina’s I drove back in the day?
We want a stronger box, and as we want a period OD box, this is the best option
Ford type 9 conversion a better bet, Chris Weedon from the owners club did a batch of marina to type 9 adapter plates.

Get that rover v8 in there and go on the motorway and watch there faces 😂😂
Is this Britain's answer to 'Coldwar Motors'? I think it maybe.
Put in the steering rack first before a final decision

We may be too predictable. Those hub caps have been there ages. You may spot them there earlier in the video.
Liked that one. Nice balance between car and humour.
How is the E30 though?
Thank you. Matt steam cleaned the engine bay today. We need to spend a day or two doing some welding.
Washed it today! Doubled the value at least 😂
It will be getting polished shortly so won't look as atrocious

If you are going that far , why not put an MX eningine and gearbox into it?
We have had the engine rebuilt and have the bits we need. We don't have any MX5 bits.
MX! Get thee behind me Satan!
Find a dolomite od box it's so much easier?..
Matt says it won't be able to handle the torque for when we supercharge the engine.
@crap_car Or the Nitrous Boost on top of that.
put the Marina box back in guys to much hassle inc speedo being wrong keep as mr LEYLAND intended
The speedo can be recalibrated.
Did you realise your address is showing ?😳😅
We will expect biscuits and presents in the post.
