  • THINGS ARE SCARY RIGHT NOW! If you're fortunate enough to be in a position where you can support artists, perhaps visit my wonderful merch store? It's at Crowdmade.com/NateIsLame.
    My videos can be a lil sad sometimes, but it's sometimes important to put everything into perspective and really reflect on the nature of everything. In this special lil meditation on existential nihilism and Terror Management Theory, I try my darned hardest to answer a really easy question: Why do anything?
    I know this is some pretty intense and heavy subject matter, but I really hope you watching this will come away from this feeling energized and motivated rather than bummed and stuff. Everything kinda does suck for everyone, especially right now. But that's kinda more the reason to continue tricking yourself that it doesn't.
    All we have is our perception of the world and our day to day experiences. Why throw that away, ya know?
    The brilliant song at the end is "Nothingness Vs. The Optimistic Spirit" by St. Terrible, my favorite artist in the northwest United States. Check it out on Spotify and stuff if you can.
    By the way! I kinda tasked myself with a challenge for this video: I wanted movement in EVERY SINGLE SECOND of this project. No still stick dudes running through lines like a Powerpoint. I'm kinda experimenting to make my videos a lil more visually interesting. If you thought this was a neat lil thingiemabobber, please let me know. I'm very self conscious and nervous about trying new things.
    BY THE WAY SOME DISCLAIMERS!
    This video is kinda approaching this topic from a secular perspective. If you're like "but the Bible says sdfjkahfkjdhaskfdh" we're not gonna get anywhere. We're on two very different planes of information to compare and contrast. I talk about religion stuff more in-depth in my other video, "My Thoughts on Religion."
    "But Nate, we don't completely know if-" Listen dude, you're free to think whatever you'd like. That's cool. I'm not here to change minds or anything, I'm just here to think out loud and draw silly stick people and whatever. But when you assert some level of uncertainty on the very fabrics of reality, our understanding of the laws of nature, and so on so forth... You're kinda going toe-to-toe with brilliant scientists who have dedicated their lives to understanding, testing, and experimenting with this stuff. The scientific method is never 100% certain on anything, but it's often 99.9% sure about most of the stuff it asserts. Just because you don't completely understand how something works doesn't mean it's untrue. It's your responsibility to educate yourself.
    "But Nate, the meaning of life is a test! We're put here to make our own decisions, to be good people! Choosing between good and evil, free will, so on so forth!" This is not a very well thought-out assertion like... at all dawg. It basically comes down to this: If God is omnipotent, he's in control of whether or not injustice is a necessary foil to extract obligatory meaning out of anything. He also knows the outcome of all moral situations he throws his creations into. Either god is bound to pre-existing ideals or he's evil. But again, this video is also kinda assuming we're on a secular basis of understanding with each other. I'm just throwing this disclaimer in here since I know there are gonna be hundreds of 14 year olds trying to argue this in the comments, and it's gonna blow up my phone for months on end after I've posted this video.
    Wow you actually read all this? I'm impressed. You get a banana Laffy Taffy for your efforts.

      As much as your video does make sens I think you miss a few very optimistic point of views. I occasionally slip into the same thought circle that is hard to crawl out from but am reminded of every day that humanity is only a step before immortality. Human Ai synchronization is possible in theory and is predicted to be achieved in 2050, genetic manipulation that presumably would destroy the act of aging is possible in the near future, cures from diseases of all kinds pop up every day, multiverse theory provide the possibility of a safe space after the end of the universe and many other scientific revolutions are made every day push humanity a step further into immortality. These steps are just to many for use normies too keep track of. Harari writes very interesting books on human development and future development and would recommend it if stuck in a cyckle of dispair. Because even if you will try to distract yourself from the void by family, love or hobbies it will always be watching you. It’s impossible to ignore the void once you have looked in it, concurs it instead. The beginning you cannot change but the end is not set in stone as you seem to believe.

      @@scarykloky519 Sorry man, but immortality is not achievable, period. You can copy your brain into a computer, but it's not like your true perception is what lives on. The you inside the program is just a copy. You're still going to die no matter what. Life extending medical breakthroughs will be nice, but they don't have a surgery to prevent heat death and murder. You are not going to live forever, period. None of the optimistic notes you brought up provide compelling rebuttals for this video unfortunately. :(

    • @scarykloky519
      @scarykloky519 4 года назад

      NateIsLame but what do you consider true perception then? Every new experience change a person, if a copy with all your memories and experience in a new vessel would just be another experience of yourself. Maybe here it’s a matter of personal opinions, but in my opinion the thing that makes up an individual is the experience of life not the vessel we are contained in. I mean I don’t have the same perception of life as I did as a toddler, was toddler me and me now have some special connection that me in human vessel or computer vessel can’t have. I would argue no, in both cases our abilities change as well as our perception. And sure right now being saved from heat death seems impossible but concidering that fourth dimension (or fifth dissensions if you count time) was discovered last year I can imagene the possibility of trans ending physical vessels at all, sure this is just a theory with no grounds but there are billions of years until heat death and I can believe that as humanity (or the altered species we transform in to) will have enough knowledge of physics, technology and other fields to be able to avoid it. And sure murder will go on for some time but not everyone will be murdered and concidering that crime rates in murder consistently fall through the centuries as well as the likelihood of surging murre has gone up I could imagene that even murder would become just a memory of a way of life thousands of years ago.

    • @scarykloky519
      @scarykloky519 4 года назад +1

      @@NateIsLame well okay sure, maybe it's all just a distraction from oblivion after heat death but I don't get why a copy is not the same as yourself. Like you change everyday, you said that perception is what you experience right now, and you will not able to experience right now even in another vessel. Maybe my English is not enough to truly express my ideas fully, I can't claim that I am right, that it's that way our technology will go. Maybe we will be nuked before that. What I am saying is that humans can overcome our biological death if time through various mean, we have already prolonged life more than it was biologicaly predicted to be able too through medicin and technological advancement. Becuse we have no true way of knowing the future I don't think we can certainly say that we are going to die out as species, I maybe will die tomorow, maybe I will get new medecin that will proloungue my life for centuries and to that point in time there is a new medecin that will proloungue life even more. Becuse of our exponential technical evoulution it's hard to predict the future but with what little knowledge of the world I have I think it's a possibility that we could survive a heth death. For me personally the meaninglessness of life has nothing to do with my death or the death of the species. Becuse there is a possibility of us being able to cheat death and let's say we do the universe is still meaningless, death has nothing to do with it.

      Death shouldn't be like your getting discarded, or deleted, but more like returning to a welcoming home after a long vacation if you still felt, that would be like how I imagine it to be.
      You walk into a strangely familiar location, you're sight is hazy, like a dream, and you have an obscurely comforting melody playing in you're head. Your all alone, and yet, your together with you're friends, family, pets, and all of you're favorite things to pass along the time, are all fully accessible and right in front of you're eyes.
      But yet, you have a lingering sensation like nothing your seeing even exists. Like nothing could be wrong with your true happiness, but there is, and your not sure what. You just start to realize nothing around you looks anything like you remember it, and yet you have no memory of anything, and soon, all around you the world starts to fade into dust.
      Nothing else could be wrong, but you get the urge to do something with what's left of your world you knew, and formed some dust into a sphere. And it hold up an its own, then you realize, its just like a galaxy.
      You think of a random object, and it magically appears.
      Your world turned into a galaxy.
      You think, trying to imagine what happened before and all you can think of is an earth like planet, and you start creating rules and life's building blocks, like trees, soil, water, air, and so many ideas flow into you're mind you can barely keep up with them.
      Then you lose most control, and all you can create is the species that takes over and populates the planet you created.
      And you spend an ungodly amount of time, and your finally finished. You made it in the shape of the only thing you can think of, yourself. And so it begins......

    I came to the point where I discover nothing matters. Whatever I do, whatever I think, nothing matters it will all be gone after my last breath. And it's been going for years. For the last seven years Ive had this thought of suicidal, as I felt nothing matters. I continue going thru this life finding it purpose. I've watched several videos liked this but nothing makes me feel what I felt from watching yours. Sad, self-pity and then smiling on the end.
    I felt like your thoughts are completely the same what had been playing on my mind but not the ending part. And so, I came to the conclusion that I must agree with you, just enjoy the fleeting moment of our little lives while we can.

    That hit hard. I've been thinking about how I'm gonna be the people you see die in tv shows. How I'm going to be an old guy not knowing when my last day is, but knowing my death day is near and it scared me to my core, but this helped me realize maybe it's not such a bad thing. J0gand0 Nietzsche didn’t believe necessarily that meaning was in the world in the same way objects like tables and chairs are, but he did believe that meaning could emerge through the interaction of human minds with their environments. When Nietzsche announced that “God is dead,” he claimed that human beings would have to learn to create their own values, and that want a human being was was most fundamentally a meaning creating being.

      Finnegan McBride “Every belief, every considering something-true is necessarily false because there is simply no true world”
      - Nietzsche, Will to Power
      Now, I don’t think Nietzsche himself was a nihilist- from what I remember, he was a thinker similar to Camus in that he argued that inside of the abyss of values that the death of God brought, we ought to create new values in light of that. Still, due to Nietzsche’s skepticism of morals and metaphysics in the light of his “death to God”, one could come away from reading Nietzsche a nihilist; same with Camus. From what I interpret, they’re both nihilists to an extent in that they believe there’s a void of inherent meaning and purpose in life, but their response to that void is to say “Fuck you, I’ll create my own meaning anyway”.
      It was also a joke that shouldn’t be taken too seriously, but meh, I’m here for the discourse.

    Dude this video is beautiful. I’m a Christian and I don’t see myself ever being otherwise, but I feel that this is such a universal outlook on life. No matter what religion/atheist beliefs you subscribe to there’s nothing you can do about your eventual death except make your life as fulfilling as it possibly can through any number of goals you have for yourself in your own life. I personally feel that God is real and that I have worked on a solid connection with him in my own life, and hope to make it stronger as I go on. I have other goals as well for myself, but I still have this hope that an afterlife is waiting for me. There are just too many people I want to feel the presence of and speak with again. Too many people I miss or have never even met that I want to see and I hope heaven is for real. In the meantime, however, I’ll try my best to spend my time doing things I enjoy, and more importantly giving and receiving love from people around me in all different forms. At some point in this video though I will say I was like this is WAY too dark but I’m so happy I stuck around because by the end something was wonderfully heartwarming about this video. Whenever I see a kid in public I sometimes think of the day the will realize their inevitability. I realized this a very young age. Around about 9-10. I think how they had no choice in coming into this world, and even if they look happy now, where will they be in 20 years? Life’s unfair, and those 5 year olds could die tomorrow. Then I remember that there’s nothing I can change about it, so there’s no reason to dwell on it.

      At a young age I accepted the fact that things were this way, personal problems, bullies. I'm pretty sure I've been depressed all my life, even when I was young and I tried to cover it up by doing other things. Honestly, I don't really know how I feel on the topic of the future, and I'm probably going to be continuing this lifestyle for a while. I've had this sense of this responsibility about something (not getting into it) that I always had this ya know extra, and most times I just wish I didn't and that I didn't have that much weight. And then all the stuff wrong with me, that slowly slipping of myself until I'm this blob who just feeling sorry I ever even tried to began to be a nice person. I don't even know if I believe in an afterlife, frankly, I don't believe in a god, maybe a few of them, hundreds, but it doesn't matter what I believe in because I'm still faced with that afterlife, is it one I deserve? No, and I have that responsible all my life for no apparent reason so yeah I'm definitely depressed, I can't deal, and I can't make myself feel better.

Things are scary, death is rampant, and no one knows when it's all going to go back to normal. Or, rather, no one knows if it ever will. I now know I need to rationalise these thoughts because overthinking all of this won't give me any answers. I hope I can get through this and if not, hey it doesn't matter- I'll be dead.
