    I have been in amateur racing IRL for years, and as dumb as it sounds, yes, need for speed pro street isn't to far off in terms of realism of those events. Just listen to the guy talking on stage, while you are in your menu.

Playing it back more than a decade and a half later, now fully grown and more adapt to real life track events and culture, I realize how accurate ProStreet is in its ability to represent the track day culture, with time attack, sector shoot out, multiclass racing, etc. Even the burnout before the drag racing, is legit how you are supposed to properly drag race. It's become one of my favorite NFS games, Top 5 for sure

And there was SRS that was a sort of in between where you had proper closed off races, but you got to freeroam the streets to get to events aswell as some street racing challenges.

    I've actually figured out that for drift events, your score multiplier is based on your CURRENT GEAR more than your drift angle, so you want to have your gear as high as reasonably possible to increase your score multiplier in your drifts. However, you need to be considerate that using a higher gear makes the car handle more stiffly in turns, so you have to balance your current gear and car handling accordingly.

    Here's a Sector Shootout tip: When you are coming up on the end of a sector, and you know you will comfortably smash the current score, slow down, try to win the sector but with ~30 points less than you you know you could have gotten, then on the next lap, allow yourself to go faster, beat your own record again, rinse and repeat. If you can do it every lap of the race, you will gain 600 or 800 points per sector more than if you just go all out from the start and fail to best your first lap performance. Have fun getting some silly numbers on the board

    From someone who bought it at launch and still play it from time to time and do have fun with the game:
    When i have to take away my nostalgic bias (as i think is a good thing, looking back at older games), i have to be honest with myself when i am voicing my opinions on old games. Because the gameplay is quite shallow, the game mechanics were okay, but was broken in several areas, like handling and tuning that sometimes contradicts what they were supposed to. Here are some examples:
    Drag;
    - You can heat up the tires by using the clutch and slowly apply throttle. If you get the hang of it, you can make a perfect tire burnout without spinning the wheels.
    - The older cars can have a super-short gear ratio up until the last gear, which is super long (except some at tier 4 transmission).
    - It doesn't make sense that i can add a better suspension and tires on a 12HP Corolla and make it go wheelie.
    Grip;
    - The cars the sluggish at first, but can become really snappy after a few upgrades, like the Ford GT and 240SX (which is OP just like NFSC).
    Drift;
    - You can't choose when to start and stop drifting. The game does that for you. And if you want to correct it, there is almost no way to do that reliably.
    Also, all the kings were a joke. Even a new player could beat most of them first try, second try at most. Maybe the last grip race with Ryo may give you a slight challenge and the wheelie challenges in Drag, but i was able to beat all of them on semi-fully upgraded 240SXs on Tier 2/3 mix of upgrades, which says either how OP the car is in the game, or how bad and boring the kings were.
    I don't have any real complaints about Speedrun, however some cars get unstable after jumps out of nowhere and tuning may reduce it a bit. But only a bit.
    Now i may sound overly negative, so there are some positives about the game:
    - The game runs quite well on high end hardware and even supports SLI and quad core CPUs, which wasn't a given in 2007.
    - The graphics are still looking good with no usage of bloom (which was something a lot of games added in 2006-2010 imo, like undercover) epspecially the tire smoke.
    - I may be biased, but the soundtrack was quite good with only a few weird songs.
    - The customization, although the body kits were boring, is still solid. and all the decal/vinyl options was something i could spend hours on, just to make my masterpiece.
    It's just like Crash Bash. I played the game a lot as a child and did enjoy it. But looking back at it, it wasn't (and imo still isn't) worth the hype and positivity towards it.
    I am sure i have pissed off a few people and people are welcome to disagree with me. But also keep in mind to be honest about yourself and look at it from an angle of someone, who isn't a huge fan of said game.

    If I could change anything from Prostreet, I would make Ryo Watanabe be the main character, imagine in your first grip race he crashes and you get a scripted scene where he has to use his backup car. Then he pulls the BMW M3 GTR out of a semi truck trailer and you realize this could be the main character from the previous games. (This makes more sense. The EVO couldn't do the wheelie competition so Ryo would need RWD car.)

    15:50 Even though the Forza Horizon games don’t have stories either, for some reason the developers and writers still put a bit of effort into the writing. Even when a game does not have a story, that little bit of effort goes quite a ways toward making the few NPCs feel like characters. The lack of such effort in NFS Pro Street is so jarring while watching this review. It’s been 15 years since I played the game so I’d forgotten how terrible the writing was.

    • @mitchelldiedrich
      @mitchelldiedrich  Год назад +4

      Honestly, I feel like I can *almost* see what they were going for - the characters in Most Wanted and Carbon were pretty over the top, and they wanted to continue that. The problem is that Ryo's only character trait to amplify is his insecurity, and his reaction is aloofness, which just comes off as shitty writing (which, really, it is). I agree, Forza does a much better job at this.

    • @Piketom1
      @Piketom1 Год назад +2

      @@mitchelldiedrich Agreed. The writing in Pro Street and Ryo in particular was both terrible and lazy. I really like the fact that the prior games didn't try to take themselves seriously and really leaned into the corniness of the characters. It was part of the charm.

    I get why people who played UG/UG2/MW '05/Carbon would not like ProStreet, but for me, an 8-yr old who just got their first home console (it was a Wii, lol), this game was my everything. When my Wii eventually stopped reading discs, I managed to score a cheap PC copy of ProStreet. After I installed a couple of QoL mods (the Generic Fix, one making the AI much more competitive, full controller support with controller button prompts, giving the McLaren F1 its engine sound back lol, etc.) the game on PC was a blast of fresh air compared to what I had on Wii (which was essentially identical to the PS2 release).
    Now I have a frankly-unhealthy habit of comparing every newer racing game I have to this game. It captures the feeling of "built not bought" and "well shit, I spent all my money on new suspension parts so I guess I'm having instant ramen for breakfast" so well. Having to pay for damages, deciding which performance part to splurge on, having to redo certain race days to earn money while also risking paying for more damages, etc.; it was a good balance of everything IMO. Don't even get me started on the soundtrack; I could go on for days.
    The only other racing game that comes to mind was Forza Horizon 1 and 3, where you start out as a nobody and work your way up to basically running the place. It's not as nitty-gritty as ProStreet, but a hell of a lot more streamlined. Nothing will ever replace ProStreet tho for me; it's truly one of my all-time favorite games.
