      Thinking I might try your course. I’ve got 20 years of playing the most classic difficult pieces badly and not memorizing when I finally learn them and move to the next one. Never had a single lesson or had a routine. Do you think your course can give me what I’m missing?

    I really appreciate you putting the titles of the pieces on the video Brandon! As someone who's relatively new to classical guitar, it helps a ton to put a name to pieces I've heard a million times without knowing the name, or even pieces I've never heard.

    "Around the 12th fret on the third string I'm hearing a boing-iness on the other one and a clarity on this one..."
    Just, wow, that Marshall can pick that out with all of the other sonic information. I suppose you have to be able to, if your job is to know the sound of your instruments and know what makes it, but that's just incredible.

      I dont want to disregard his ability. He is definitely skilled, but i will say that if you know the music or songs its a bit easier to know the fret and string.

    I'd love to see another collaboration with Marshall talking about the different styles of classical guitar and what makes them different from one another. I know quite a bit about steel string guitars, but now I'm on a classical guitar kick and it would be interesting to me, at least, to learn how the classical/flamenco guitars are braced and different construction oddities. Thanks for your awesome work Brandon! I love watching both of y'all.

    Wow he is the rainman of luthiers. This was so interesting. As an extremely frugal person (my guitar was $300 and I don’t plan on upgrading) who has always justified not buying a decent guitar this was a bit jarring. The sour grapes are real lol. I still believe that there is demonstrably a diminishing return on investment once you get above the $1500 mark, but wow I’m impressed by the nuance that is actually intelligible to your ears. What is even more astonishing is that once Marshall described what I was hearing I could hear the difference too. I definitely don’t possess superhuman powers like you both do, but the fact that this ability to distinguish is apparently semi teachable is astounding. Please do more of these. If you do, you might be able to convert me to buying something a little nicer and practicing more often lol.

    That Santos was gorgeous! I will be dreaming about it for the rest of the night. Maybe Marshall will let you play it for a longer video so we can hear more of its beautiful, sonorous tones. Now I want to learn more about Santos. The real find for me today was the Simplicio. I was quite taken by the sound of this instrument. Since never having heard of this luthier, I feel compelled to ask Mr Google to tell me more about him & his guitars....
    Incidentally, my classical guitar is Fleta copy built by a wonderful luthier near me named Ivon Schmukler. It is a very large guitar and unfortunately, now that arthritis is becoming more of an issue for my small hands, it is getting harder for me to play. I hate the thought, but I might have to start looking for a classical guitar that is a bit smaller, but still sounds like a big guitar that is capable of big dynamic ranges like my Fleta copy.

    Unrelated: It might be time for a new camera. I'm not expecting 4K HDR, but the strings (especially for the zoomed in cuts) look aliased (AKA blocky) and other visual details are a bit soft (not in an out-of-focus way, but in an at-the-limits-of-the-camera way).

    Let me tell you that I love this kind of videos. It's always fantastic to hear great guitars being played by a great musician. Having said that I would like to add a little criticism: none of the guitars - none of them - really impressed me listening to the video. I would say that unfortunately the recording doesn't do justice to the guitars. I can very well hear the differences between original and replica as well as the sound differences between the models. But the sound in general overaccentuates the mid range. The treble strings seem a bit weak on all instruments which in the room certainly was not the case. So, unfortunately I as a listener was not impressed with the sounds that I heard as you both were in the room. Hope this makes sense. Keep up the good work!

    • @sansumbrella
      @sansumbrella 6 месяцев назад +3

      Changing strings can make a big difference to the guitar sound. It's worth trying different makes of strings on your guitar, and keep in mind that "expensive" strings won't necessarily sound "better" on your guitar.
      You will probably need to try different strings yourself, since the language used to describe their sound, like "natural," doesn't translate well from ear to ear.

    It's not just the sound that matters. It is the playability as well. Better to do a comparison with the guitarist rather than the audience. That said, a concert level classical guitarist can make a well-made entry level classical guitar sound amazing.

      @user-nl6dg2mp8p Месяц назад

      @@brandonacker Thanks for your response. I am a mediocre classical guitarist on my best days. However, I can say that a concert level instrument does make a difference. I had the honor of going over to Tom Humphrey's apartment in NY back in the mid 1980s to try out his guitars. He had three that were completed. I sat down on his couch and had an almost mystical experience (given that I am a hard-core scientist, that is a big deal to me). It was though the guitar played itself. I sat there holding this work of art and amazing sounds were coming out. I immediately asked about purchasing the instrument, but he said that it was already taken, and he had a 3-year waiting list. Plus, the price was over half my salary at the time. I will never forget that wonderful day in mid-town Manhattan. RIP Tom.

    Beautiful instruments, and I got all 4 correct. You can hear the sound of a newer guitar compared to one that has lived.

    I'm either going crazy or I'm starting to hear the difference, too. Most likely the first one.

    Skip if you don't want to hear me whinging. -> The mix has a little too much bass and sustain. Makes it a bit hard to hear the mid.
