This metal detector is capable of detecting small metal objects at great distances. For example, a small metal coin or gold ring can be found at a distance of up to 25 cm. And the best part is that it is very simple and can be made by anyone who has basic knowledge in the field of electronics.

The basis for the preparation is a "Smart Hunter" detector from
"neco-desarrollo.es" page and also uses free Android software from the same company. This company is a leader in designing hardware and software that can be used to make simple but high-performance metal detectors.
This time I tried to simplify it even more by replacing the Arduino microcontroller with chip (about2$) signal generator module with adjustable frequency and duty cycle from Aliexpress. Also with this signal generator, the metal detector setting is extremely simplified and there is a possibility for lot of experiments with different types of detection coils.
This is a VLF (very low frequency) detector tecnology and contains two idenmtical coils : transmiter and receiver coil. In this case each coil contain 55 windings of isolated copper wire with a diameter of approximately 0.5 mm2 . We bend the coils into a shape called a "double D" according to the template you can download at the link below , where you can also download the complete scheme.
We first need to determine the parallel resonant frequency of the primary coil using one of the many calculators. In our case it is 4.74 kHz. On the signal generator we need to enter exactly this frequency and set the duty cycle to 50% . If you adhere to the dimensions of the coils and the values of the elements given in the diagram, you can directly enter the value given above. The secondary coil connects to the microphone input on the smartphone as shown in the diagram. On the phones output of the smartphone is connected a small audio amplifier and speaker and we get a sound signal when detecting a metal object. The video describes in detail the construction of the entire device.
As you can see in the video, the results are surprisingly good. Without the presence of a metal device is perfectly stable. The range is very large and for example a metal cover with a diameter of 15 cm is detected at a distance of more than 60 cm. Larger metal objects are detected at distances greater than 1m.

Thank you for sharing a great project. What type of wave form does the signal generator output? Its description says it is a "block" wave, which I would think is a square wave. However, I thought that you said it was a triangle wave? If I used another signal source, what would be the best wave form to use? A sine wave? I do not think that I am finding the phone output audio amplifier/speaker circuit. I have a LM386 audio amp circuit that should be good for the job. Yes? What did you use? Please and thank you.

Hello Mirko, well done! However I am missing info on what the smallest detectable object is. Can you for example detect a 1mm piece of gold in very close distance? What would have to be changed to detect very fine gold - more copper windings, higher frequency?

How deep is the measurement underground?
Can I do it with the oscillator circuit 40Mhz with induction coil. and detecting eddy current through receiver and amplify with op amp?

I am new to electronics, but your project is very interesting. I want to make one, but I am confused as follows: (1) to buy the resistor, which wattage should I buy? The 0.25 watt, 0,5 watt, or 1 watt? (2) And the power, do you mean it is "from 7,4 to 9 volt" , or can I just plug a 9 volt battery? (3) why the 2K resistor have down arrow while the 1K5 not? (1) All resistors are 0,25W (2) you can plug a 9V battery (3) you can put 1K or 1k5 resistor instead 2kPotentiometer

Can you please tell me what is voltage value of the capacitors you used and does the difference in inductance of the coils affect the sensitivity? I need an answer. please.
I use capacitors with voltage of 250V but polyester capacitors with 63V or less can be used. The difference in the inductance of the coil affects the sensitivity, because with its change the resonant frequency also changes.

what values did you enter in application frequency setting
The application has no settings other than the sensitivity threshold with "+" and "-"
What is the diameter of the two coils?
Can you give me the frequency and duty you use it in your project ???
I think it wouldn't be very useful to know that since the frequency is dependent on the coil you use when you build it so you probably have to calculate it yourself. For capacitance C and inductance L, frequency f = 1/(2*pi*sqrt(L*C)). Somewhere in the video he said the duty cycle he used was 50%.

thanks for sharing. The photos you shared during the production phase contain materials that are not in the drawing. Is this confusing. Can you share a new photo showing the inside of the box? And in the drawing you didn't show where to connect the speaker pls
I took those photos while testing the device. The scheme presented is exactly the one I used to make the final device. The speaker is connected to a small d-class audio board and the input of this amplifier is connected to the headphone output of the phone. You can hear the sound directly on the smartphone but with much lower volume

Going to try to build one. hey even if i fail, the phone is old. no one cares. it would be nice to somehow integrate both types of metal detectors (pulse, and induction) in to one WATERPROOf unit, plus i could have a clock, gps, and who knows what else

@@Incastro80 It is not possible to avoid the Smartphone. Speaker is connected to earphones output on smartphone thru small D-class Amplifier board

Can any one explain me about one small equipment which has near module and with connected to signal generater modul.
And 2nd is 3 red colour capacitor which one shown in video or picture
That module is a 3.3 V stabilizer because the one on the module burned out. The third capacitor is not connected, I was just testing the sensitivity with different capacities

Tx coil have many different perform, when small coil can detect smaller object, now we have 2 perform coil with 2 range, its look like good..

I really think this is the beginning of a game changer for detectorists but, you need to study more on the hobby. No one uses a detector this way. Watch videos on RUclips to see how it's done my friend and develope your technology from there. An app assisted metal detector is a great idea, kind of like flying a quadcopter with your phone you'll need all the tech in the machine and the app just allows for wireless function and readings and adjustments. I'll stay tuned and see how this goes. Good proof of concept.
