Mike one major issue you’re going to have over time is the drain rock getting clogged with dirt because you did not use filter fabric over and under it. If the water can get through it WILL take dirt with it! For proper drainage you must ALWAYS use the fabric to keep the dirt out of the drain rock. What you’ll find is you’ll have to end up every several years redoing the same job over and over because you skipped a vital step.
Marty does a lot of great work. However, when I saw how the drain was done, I had my doubts. What you’re doing is a step in the right direction. If i were you, I’d bite the bullet and install a French drain all across the back and the two short sides of the house and drain to daylight.
You need to waterproof that block wall and install a drain system the whole length of he back wall. Dig a drain line from the dry well to the outside edge of where the house and let it drain off the side!
Well unfortunately before you put that dirt on top of your rock you should have put filter Fabrick on the rock before you covered it with dirt. What is going to happen is over time the dirt will make it's way through the rock and plug up the rock. We call it "Burrito Wrapping" the rock to create a French drain...it's going to be ok for a while however the problem will be back.
It's been a while, but the way I remember the Homestead Rescue episode Marty drain system was a sort of last minute attempt using stuff that was on hand and Marty expected it might fail and may need to be redone. I see some comments getting on you for 'calling out' Marty. I didn't take it that way, and both you and Liz have always given the Raineys and their show alot praise and thanks for their help..... but, "haters are gonna hate". I saw nothing wrong with what you said. If they watch Marty they will have seen he isn't afraid to step back, admit something isn't working, and try something different. I think he would approve your new approach. Take care of yourself, and hope Liz can put up with the old 9 to 5 until you guys catch up. PS it's obvious that the cat was just trying to help massage your sore back.
My brother in law put a plastic barrel into the ground with a sub pump in it, and it stopped water from coming into his house. We have had several big rains, and it worked great.
@@MikeandLizLorden pour radiator fluid in the big barrel and that will help keep it from freezing. And a heated water drop in rod to keep the barrel water warm and not freeze.
@@MikeandLizLorden not necessarily. Like other water systems, it comes down to burying the tank/barrel below the frost line. No idea what it is there, but if it's anything like my part of NH, it'll be 5 ft.
Too late now but as others have suggested' drainage fabric, heavy duty plastic sump container with pup, gravel bed for perf pipe covered indirt inhibiting mesh fabric, etc. Blocks should have been faced with hydraulic mesh as well to prevent water incursions.
A clever idea using the culvert and stones. I would pull away any dirt that gets on top. The issue is that dirt will percolate down through the rocks and begin to clog your drainage. Place some filter fabric to keep the dirt out.
I think the title of this video should be changed. You are implying the Raneys made a big Mistake whereas they were trying to do a quick fix that just didn't work. I suspect the real problem is lack of waterproofing the back and side walls and not installing weeping tile at the base of the walls to carry away all the water. I hope your improvised solution works, but it would have been better with filter fabric all around the stone as other people have said.
As a person who has dealt with that same back pain for almost 50 yrs - one thing I have found that helps - is a spray called 'arthri-calm'. It is a magnesium spray. If I use it as soon as I start to feel the twinges (not letting it get bad) it will keep me out of crises. I buy the stuff on-line it's not that expensive and if it helps - well that would be a good thing. I even use it on muscle aches too - not just arthritis areas and it seems to help. Just a thought....
I don't understand why some of the comments are criticizing you for describing the problem. You acknowledged what a huge help it was to have the retaining wall built and thanked yhe TV show in other videos. Dealing with a water issue that persists and sharing the reality of life on the homestead is not being ungrateful. Hope all is well with your lovely wife.
peoples have pointing out some good point. the thing i would be very worry about is all those big rock pile up against your block wall. over time the frost will push them and crack your block wall. I would remove those big rocks and replace it river rocks near the block wall . Then fill the rest of the hole with sand. also as those rocks move it could also crush your pipe you just put in.
Hate to say it, but....I think I might have lined the hole bottom/walls with that black filter fabric. Then fill hole with rocks. Cover the top with the black filter fabric to make like a filter ball. The cover with topsoil. Just seems to make sense to me. Let us know who it works out for you. Go sit in the river (icebath)! Feel better
Hey did you get your track motor fix? Could you apply a rubber sealant on you block wall? Maybe add a pump to pump the access water away from your house
So for your back I will tell what worked for me for a long time. Tylenol arthritis helps a lot more than ibuprofen because they relieve pain differently. When it flares up stand in as hot a shower as you can with water beating down on your back. Spend time laying on a heating pad. I would take muscle relaxers when I went to bed and when it was really bad I would washout down with a couple of beers because of the effect of mixing meds with alcohol was what I was looking for to get rest. Also learn stretches that target the muscles and nerves that are effected. This helped me for years before an injury kn the job took me down the back surgery road.
At least the young man wants to work to help his water problem an not sit on his assan have someone else do it, good for this young couple God Bless them❤😊
Personaly I would have put a 90* elbow on that culvert pipe and perforated pipe up to ground level. This way you can visually see the pipe is clear. I would also use your road to divert alot of the water away from the back of the house too.
I feel your pain, I had major back surgery a little over a year ago and it took me over 5 months to get over it and still not where I want to be. Hopefully you will feel better soon
If it doesn't work can always change things up , I would have graded the soil between the wall and house to the middle then put a french drain down the whole thing. filter fabric is your friend like a lot of other have said. it looks like you have the equipment to get it done if need be. This is how I learned I tried stuff till I found out what worked for my situation. I didn't have the equipment and dug by hand rock too. Thanks for the video was cool to see.
Non corrugated white 4" perf pipe works really good (perfs on the bottom), wrapped in drain cloth, surrounded by 1-1/4" clean drain gravel, with a 1/4" drop every 10'. I made mine all around the perimeter of my 24'x40' shop, draining away from my shop in a 24" deep trench. It works so good I no longer get any water in my shop now. I also taped up a 9" wide membrane to the 4" concrete slab to keep the dirt from getting eroded away under the concrete along with the gravel and the drain cloth.
The drainage improvements look great and will hopefully solve the water issues. You have been kinda over doing it with all that digging and shoveling. You need to rest your back dude!
I know how you feel with your bit of back pain as I’ve suffered with my bad back now for some 24 years and I started like you were but mine has never got any better just worse I’m now wheelchair bound and been on morphine for the pain for the last 19 years and I’d give anything to lose the pain for a day.
SO my friend. That is not going to be the permanent solution you hoped for. You could have used the "burrito wrap" mentioned below, but that method is better for seepage. What you have (based on what you have said is a massive rush of water down the hillside that does not stop until it hits your foundation. That's why I suggest the fast disposal system. If you had installed a catch basin all the way in the bottom of your pit and drained it to daylight with your culvert, you would have a permanent solution. You would have had to add stack on extensions to bring the catch basin up close to finished grade and a full size grate. As others have said below, your drain rock will silt up (3-5 years max) and you'll be doing this job again. Maybe next time you do it the right way.😊 If you have seepage through your block walls, well that's an inside fix for another day. But you will have to pump the seepage away to daylight.
Too bad you didn't apply a water membrane or something like that on your wall. Maybe it's not too late. Though I don't know if that will bé enough to solve the problem.
I seen you put oil into your final drive I am assuming that you found your final drive problem and if its leaking keep track of it and don't let it go dry or it will cost you more than just the seal. I hate to tell you but it just for the seal replacement is going to cost over a thousand dollars and that is if you take off the final drive and send it to a shop. good luck with it and take care of that back
Would be a good idea to either add more length to your culvert pipe or pour an apron at the end. The water will really erode the dirt. Sorry about your back. Take it easy for a bit. Give Liz a hug for all of us fans. Be safe. Till next tim..e
