Writing proofs is one of the most fun things on doing math. A proof shows you, why is something in a way it is.

Yes, I agree! All that is needed for proofwriting is the ability to read/ write and a motivation to think more rigorously. Basic logic (P's and Q's) is extremely helpful but can be picked up along the way.

I love Maths Sorcerer ! Thank you sir for devoting your time here on this channel and initiating such a wonderful community of people from all over, it's simply a pleasure to be able to view this. I'm really glad. I'm a high schooler yearning for a Bachelor degree in Mathematics, I love how you absolutely encourage people about studying and learning rather than stifling their desires and stating "Later you're not there yet..you need this you need that.."
You are one of the reasons I could be back on the subject after falling out for 2 years. THANK YOU

I recently discovered that Velleman has a proof-based Calculus book, "Calculus: A Rigorous First Course", published by Dover, so not hugely expensive. It's on my wantlist.

Don’t know about the US but in the UK, the UKMT Olympiad papers enable you to learn proof writing skills from age 12-13 pretty much. The questions don’t require anything more than the level of maths taught in school at that age group but are all about rigorous logical arguments. Great place to start and if worked on consistently it means that by the time you’re doing college/uni maths classes, proof writing is basically second nature and you can focus on the ideas and concepts of that class.

Wow, this video hit me like a ton of Bricks!!! I dropped out of Highschool in the 9th grade. I got my GED at 40 and then my Associate Degree in Electrical Systems. I applied to a University and started teaching Electrical as an adjunct. I hit my first wall: Calculus and after withdrawing twice I finally got through it. Hit the 2nd wall: Physics, getting a D... retook and passed. Now, I have hit my third wall: Intro to Higher Mathematics aka Proofs. If I do pass this class(3rd exam next Friday and Final in a couple weeks) I would be amazed, and if NOT I am wondering if I should keep trying or pick a different major. Anyway, I am glad to find this video because #1 I am checking out that book asap and #2 the inspiration of you sharing that you are GED student who made it through college. Thanks for the great videos and thank you for sharing your story!

If you want to get a maths degree in Germany, you learn proof writing from day one at university. A level maths classes in high school start to teach you proof writing and deduction. Deduction is heavily taught in German A level physics classes in high school too. You start with proof-based calculus and linear algebra in pure maths if you want to study pure maths at university. Calculus, vectors, matrices and linear equation systems are done in high school, not only on A level. So a good knowledge of these topics is expected. Universities offer a two week preparation course before the beginning of the first semester where you review everything that's expected from high school. I learned induction proofs and direct / indirect proofs on a basic level in high school. I didn't have A level maths but A level physics. All high school maths topics are also expected for university physics, computer science, chemistry and engineering.
There seem to be fundamental differences in the US system.

I think that proof writing and logic should come with elementary algebra at the latest. You can prove things that people have trouble with, like why divisionof fractions is equivalet to invert and multiply or why (-1)×(-1)=1.

I believe in introducing "proofs" from elementary school. I know this might sound "impractical" but I will clarify why this is a good approach if you are interested to know (read below).
For me, proofs (in mathematics) are arguments that justifies the truth of claims/statements. Also, I believe there are levels of "rigorousness" (i.e. preciseness) of a proof. So, even though at an early age, most children are not capable of comprehending "university-level" proofs, this does not justify not introducing a simplified versions of those arguments for the topics they are learning at that age.
Imagine if basketball players have been trained like students in math! Children will be required to only run in the around the court without a ball. They should not play a real game but need to wait until they get to high school to start practicing with basketballs and play real games because at the early age they cannot make 3-pointers like Steph curry nor they could dunk like Micheal Jordan 😅

I’ve taken the calculus series, Modern Differential Equations , Elementary Linear Algebra but my engineering degree does not require Discrete math or Proof writing. I wish it did. I love math and physics more than I like Engineering. I do like the classes like Dynamics and Circuits analysis. But i covet higher mathematics haha

I agree you have to start very soon with reading and writing proofs. I think your chose for a first book is not the best. I would say start with Polya: How to solve it. Not a proof book but you get a great feel for it. Than I would do: Proofs, A long-form mathematics textbook and then the How to roof it book. Later: An introduction to mathematical reasoning by Eccles etc. etc..

I am 23 year old and final year student studying bsc mathematics(3 year degrees program) in south africa , I became very interested in pure mathematics this year , when proof based subject like real analysis, abstract algebra, complex analysis, logic and set theory we introduced to me,but now I am very addicted to pure math and i am running out of time .the only thing I want to do is mathematics , I wish 🤞 this modules were introduced to me at young age.Now I have to catch up .
My university haven't yet introduced subjects like topology, functional analysis. But I self studied some basics concepts in those subject

i think, the Supreme Truth about this Universe is beyond mind and words... it can never be expressed in the form of a theory or an equation.
The more we seek and search for an answer to the riddle of this Universe...the more it will slip away from our grip... and the search will never be fulfilled. It may be like travelling into Space hoping to find its endpoint.
The only really meaningful thing we can do is.... to be Still...transcend our minds... and wake up from this dream.
    🙏

What is the difference between an argument and a proof? an argument is mean to convince a rational person, while a proof is meant to convince an irrational one.
