Living the DREAM ! Thanks for creating such amazing content and letting me tag along your diving adventures living vicariously through your RUclips videos. Great educational marine biology info. I absolutely love the gorgeous sea eco systems. You are the greatest pro marine environment advocate spokesperson for keeping our oceans beautiful ! Thank you:)
Just seen your video Lauren , over here in Aotearoa New Zealand 🇳🇿 we call these Kina Māori for sea urchin,, these are plentiful here and a real delicacy, it’s an acquired taste . Sometimes we don’t eat them straight away from the sea because of their saltiness so we sometimes let them sit in water for a day before opening them, some people here prefer to leave them for longer until they change colour and sometimes until the spines start to fall off but by then they are generally rotten and this is how some like to eat them,,, We do not gather them, (although some do), if they are skinny but rather prefer them when they’re in good condition like when they’re fat,, They do spawn so it’s best to gather them before they do,,, If you RUclips New Zealand Kina and Paua gathering you will see for yourself how we do this and the correct way to open them . There are a lot of videos on this and they also include recipes and ways to prepare and eat them,,, These ones that you have gathered don’t look like they are in very good condition, one way to tell is to open a couple while diving before collecting them that way you can tell if their condition is good if not you can move to another area or location and repeat the process as some areas can produce better results due to currents and food source and supply,,, Nice video though and it’s good to see you trying things,,, In Rarotonga I’ve visited and dived and their sea urchins there are a lot different to the ones we have here in New Zealand 🇳🇿,,,
A most enjoyable video Lauren. I've been to Jamaica several times and it looks like you have embraced it too. You always project your happiness. Merry Christmas 🌲
Hi Lauren. I hope you got a few more videos out of the trip. I follow Bluegabe and Kelly so I know I'll get some of theirs. I swear you were born to be in the water. So smooth and graceful. Spoil us Lauren, give us more;-))
Good choice I would have served my friends the same lol. Very interesting learned from your video. You teach well! Thank you so much for sharing. You guys should do a video on the worst to the finest foods you have got from the ocean. Be blessed!
Beautiful as ever Lauren. Freezing in Southern New Jersey now. Really cool and hugely entertaining video. Thank you all for sharing. If I ever bring a sea urchin home it’s going right in the aquarium. My original plan.
I have had sea urchin roe from a sushi restaurant. It was pretty good, but had a different texture than fish roe. I saw a video with Anthony Bourdaine a few years ago where he and another chef caught sea urchins right off the rocky sea shore, cut them open and ate it right there. They caught Black Sea urchins with longer splines, maybe those are easier to clean? Great video! Looking forward to seeing more other in 2022.
I didn't know anything about cc&cing sea urchins before. Thanks for the education, Laura. You work well with Kelly and Gabe. Oh, and nice pics of the reef; beautiful!
Hey my favorite Mermaid!!!!! So glad you posted. I saw Kelly’s post last night and was hoping this would be soon. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to my favorite mermaid!!!!! I sent you pictures of the Jeep!!!!
Loving it and it's yummy! Missing it so much and the life by the sea shores. In my homeland we call it "swaki". We also pickled it as a side dish for the starter or dipping sauce for unripe mangoes. You're amazing and cool. Stay safe. Happy blessed new year 2022!
The roe in the urchin normally has more body. You scoop them out with a spoon and put them in a small bowl and add lime juice to help clean them. Wash them off with sea water and let the water drain off as much as possible.....if you eat the raw, squeeze Lime juice and a little hot sauce....or you can season them and fry them. We would normally cook rice and then add the fried sea urchin into the rice when finish....use a large fork to stir it in
Hi Lauren, great video with Kelly & Gabe, I love how you free dive and catch & cook eat, Hope to catch up some time when I come over there in the New Year, it would be nice to get some free diving tips from you
I've been eating some small purple urchins here in Australia and they have been really good, a nice bright orangey yellow coloured roe. I tried a red urchin last week and almost gagged 😂 not sure if it's the wrong time of year or the red ones just aren't as nice. Cool video, thanks for sharing
Hahaha yeah my friends in Miami say that certain colors taste better. I'm sure the location they're found also makes a difference, for example reef vs manatee grass beds.
I absolutely love Blue gabe and Kelly Young's Channel so I had to check yours out. I think this was very interesting. I don't think I would eat it. But I love the information that you gave about the live sand dollar I had never seen that before very cool. And it's interesting to see what the skeleton of a uni looks like. I always like to learn about new things I've always been fascinated about the ocean. Thank you for the cool content.

Great to see a new video and with kelly and blue gabe Merry Christmas & Happy New Year , i tried to eat one off the rocks in Delaware ,wasn't hardly anything in it, i guess they are too small in that area
The spearfishing fish slaying stud !!! Although I looked up the closest female definition of stud and I'll have to say "The spearfishing, fish slaying vixen! " Looks like Jamaica was a lot of fun.
it's nice to see BlueGabe and Kelly helping you film, and you helping them.thank you beautiful for this video and I hope the best for you and your channel in the new year please stay safe
Lauren, First off, Merry Christmas to you and yours!! Second, I have been a follower of Gabe and Kelly's for well over a year, closer to two for each of them and all I can say, is they are Bonkers if they don't like Urchin Roe!!! In fact on Canada's west coast where I have lived and spent quite a lot of time as a younger man the Roe from the Red Urchin is called the Foie Gras of the sea!! Now to be honest the gonads of the urchins you picked up looked very small and not nearly so egg like, but I'd have still jumped in for a spoonful to try!! I hope to catch more of your episodes and will binge watch what I can over the Winter break!! Take care!! Oh and Urchin Roe or Uni to me has a nutty taste not unlike hazlenuts but that is just me.
Thank you so much! Merry Christmas to you as well! Right?! Urchin roe is so delicious! I do admit that these ones weren't as tasty as the ones harvested in the Pacific ocean, but they definitely weren't bad. Thank you for your support and I hope you have a great holiday!
Someone has probably already said it but, it is pronounced Kite-in. We have them here in Puget Sound and, when we were kids, they were always celebrated because their shell is actually a series of bones that, when dried in the sun, look like white butterflies. I want to say there are about eight of those bones in each Chiton. Our beach cabin always had jars and bowl of them. As far as the Urchins go, we have millions of them on the whole West Coast. Their only natural predator were Otters and those were wiped out during the fur trade. The Urchins eat the Kelp and have completely wiped out all of the beds that our baitfish use for shelter and to lay their eggs in the fronds. The juvenile Salmon use them for shelter also. Long story short, not enough Otters, too many Urchins, no Kelp, no baitfish, and so now the Salmon runs are basically gone. I am over simplifying it all but my point is, if you want Urchins, come take a metric ton of them here. Personally, I am not a fan. :) Love the vids. You bring a real beauty into my day. ❤
Thank you so much! I loved reading about your experiences and next time will let the shells dry out in the sun to see what it looks like! I LOVE West coast sea urchins, I definitely have to make it out there to help the cause 🍣🤤
just did 10 amazing days in the Carib. St Marten, St Lucia, Barbados, Antigua and St Kitts. you have the best waters by you! the sealife was incredible. no bad days!
Woo hoo. Glad to see you n Kelly linking up after all this time. You even made it close to Antigua 🤙 I'm not there though, I'm still in the US. The armadillo type creature we call sea beef. I haven't eaten then, only used them as bait. You finally found the right area for the white sea urchins. They love areas that are loaded with sea grass. The bigger ones don't necessarily mean you'll get the most eggs out of them. If I remember correctly, they are loaded with eggs on it around full moon. You had me laughing my @ss off when Kelly was gagging 🤣🤣 I'll admit it isn't the best flavor and prlly an acquired taste. If you're interested, I can get you a recipe for cooking them. I think one of the herbs used is sweet marjoram. Let me know if you'd like it. The key thing is to put in in the refrigerator overnight after cooking them. The next day, it tastes so much like crab. I kid you not. The other type of sea urchin, the black ones, are usually found by the rocks especially the around docks and jetties made with rocks and boulders. Those can also be eaten. For obvious reasons you'll have to break off all the needles. You don't want them getting stuck in you. Their eggs are usually a bright yellow color. They can be cooked and combined with the white sea urchins. BTW, we call them black/white sea eggs too. Not sure you saw my answer to your question in Gabe's or Kelly's video about the movement - more than likely it was some sort of goby. I'm guessing a sand goby. They like hanging out in those areas and pools on the rocks. Question - can you get an accessory that you mount your GoPro camera to your dive mask or you have to buy the dive mask with the GoPro mount? Hope to hear from you. And lastly.... Merry Christmas 🤙🍷
Thank you and Merry Christmas to you too! I'm so glad you enjoyed our collaboration, we had so much fun! I definitely have to try the black urchins! I customized my mask to hold my GoPro but you can buy masks that come with it built in.
Hi louren, its nice that u have shown alot of people that sea urchin can be eaten, its not diffirent than eating oisters, slugs m those others stuf. For me i have try it before. Bless up. I live not far from weir u catch it(Hanover)
You said you needed some new friends so I subscribed . It's the only way I can help right now . I came aceoss your channel via Kelly's and am happy I did so . Be safe , looking forward to " more adventures " .
Shout out from New Zealand. Big Kina small roe, maybe off season? Next time you open just try using 2 spoons back to back, shove them in the mouth and squeeze handles towards each other, they will crack in half. All so if you put them in a sack and leave them in a fresh water stream over night they will get more yummmmy
Thank you so much! I heard you have much better ones in NZ. I'll have to dive for some when I visit! I had a great Christmas, thank you! I hope you did too and have a wonderful New Year!

Thanks for visiting Jamaica.
My pleasure! It's such a beautiful country!
Love the vids. You bring a real beauty into my day. ❤
Thank you so much! I loved reading about your experiences and next time will let the shells dry out in the sun to see what it looks like! I LOVE West coast sea urchins, I definitely have to make it out there to help the cause 🍣🤤

@@LaurenSarasua Ahhh was hoping you customized it. If possible, kindly send a link if there's one.
Hopefully I can get the recipe for you 🤞

Famous and common delicacy here in the Philippines, it's good when you soak it with Vinegar with spices, and some wild chili.
Sounds great!
Great video Lauren of sea urchins.
