I have a question. Lately I am seeing a lot of footage from Japan where players are going at it in 3 rounds format. Is this some kind of a new standard or its just a temporary "try it out" kinda of thing?

Most likely for the starting period.
Arcades normally have steeper price for new games with 1 more rounds on these new machines. Quite the norm if you actually frequent arcades.
