    *London City Walks made the national press!*
    What WAS wrong with the Household Cavalry's horses yesterday? New video shows animals spooked - with a rider thrown to the ground and injured - in SEPARATE incident to the one that saw runaway steeds careering through London
    www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-13347535/Moment-Household-Cavalry-horses-spooked-separate-incident-runaway.html
    How The Great Escape by HCAV horses Vida (Grey), Quaker, Trojan and Tennyson unfolded:
    1. Five horses bolt from Hyde Park Barracks after being spooked by builders moving concrete;
    2. They run through Belgrave Square, where two people are injured;
    3. The horses continue down Lower Belgrave Street;
    4. A rider is unseated and injured as his horse collides with a car on Buckingham Palace Road and is then caught by passers-by;
    5. Four horses continue down Buckingham Palace Road and one hits a tour bus. It is quickly brought to heel;
    6. Two of the other horses are seen running through morning traffic on The Strand. One appears to be covered in blood;
    7. A man is seen lying on the pavement on Fleet Street;
    8. A blood-covered horse is spotted near Tower Bridge;
    9. The same two horses are seen running along Commercial Road near Limehouse, where they are ultimately captured.

      What a horrible situation, John it was caused by builders moving concrete that dropped to the floor. The troopers both horses and riders were injured after the horses understandable spooked.
      I do hope the grey is alright, plus I saw videos of two blacks, one being calmed down by a member of the public. Another swerved and clipped a taxi at traffic 🚦 lights. But all horses are being seen by vets after being found. Their riders, 3 seen by hospital doctors one returned to barracks. That's all I heard and I've tried very hard to be factual.

    An Army spokesman has told the BBC:
    _“Our horses have all returned to Hyde Park Barracks and are undergoing veterinary care. Three soldiers are in hospital receiving treatment - their injuries are not deemed to be life threatening."_

      IF the riders are upset ie the troopers becoz of the earlier incident in the streets Then you can be assured the horses have picked up on the stressed/nervous feelings of the riders. Hence Everything was out of order /unsettled when in the Square the rider was thrown. Right now we can be So thankful 5 horses were caught , etc BUT the anxious feelings will be real for all. Army thanks emergency services and public
    Lt. Col. Woodward goes on to say the army's "immediate priority" was the safety of "all soldiers, members of the public and our horses".
    He thanks a long list of emergency service providers who were involved in handling the incident this morning.
    He says their quick reaction enabled "swift treatment" of the injured soldiers and horses.
    Finally, he says that incidents like this are "extremely rare" and says the army is grateful to the public for "not making loud noise around our horses."

      Unfortunately, no matter how often people are taught to understand how extremely sensitive horses are to sudden noises or movement, it doesn't seem to sink in to the majority. I was involved with training a German Shepherd for a branch of Armed Services and given another to care for. An animal never loses its instincts just because they have been domesticated or trained. I've experienced nothing but the most positive of interactions with horses. They can sense what we are feeling. I once had one that was tethered near to my back fence, in the country, wrap it's entire neck around my waist after I introduced myself to it. They are such beautiful creatures and deserve to be treated better than what they are, mostly through ignorance.💖

    I understand that it is embarrassing to have a mishap in front of the entire world, but I also think it is important to show that these guards have a dangerous job to do. Not only do they deal with crowds of rude tourists and constant cameras but they are also in company with large animals that have a mind of their own. In other words the job consists of much more than looking pretty and sitting on a pretty horse. Another clip showed a view of the incident at Horse Guard. The horse was crowded on both sides and so he reared up to make room for himself and his rider went off backward. In human terms the horse was doing what he thought was best in the situation. He looked rather embarrassed and was polite to those who came to help him. Thankfully, both horse and rider appeared to have come out of the incident with only a few bruises and some damaged pride.

      For some reason? Horses pick up their cues from those around them, in their herd. The troopers are on edge….after the drama this morning, how can they not be? This is picked up by the horses. While they may not know “why” the horses know that their herd is on alert. This means that things that might normally be ignored are today, an issue. Like people clapping for example.

I read one comment that Wrangler was one of the horses?....my heart ❤ goes out to London.....and forgot about the Trooper that was thrown off at Whitehall, hope he's alright, too....

Better to throw the weapon clear than to land on it, and it frees up your hand to grab mane, or the "panic strap" if you have one on the horse (often a leather strap attached to the saddle, or a strap looped around the horse's neck and resting forward of their shoulders).

      @maggiemadwestiemum4511 Thank goodness for that! My first thought was the horse got bloodied from the sword! Glad to hear there were only minor injuries for everyone involved. Though I hope the bloodied horse is OK! If it was the horse that got captured 5 miles away, then I'm concerned about the blood loss! Gee! Having a giant piece of cement fall and shatter (i.e. if it did?) beside you must've been terrifying! I'd be spooked too! They must've been traumatised! Even more so once finding themselves in traffic and no rider to reassure them and calm them down! They'll be other horses affected by this as well who didn't manage to escape but were also nearby. Once physically healed, it's going to take a long time to reaclimatise them to city noises again. The poor things! I hope they're all going to be alright! Gee! This is like when they are in a war and there are things exploding around them but in those cases, they are forced to move through - forward! When all their instincts scream run away! Horrific for man or beast! Again, I hope the horses and people affected by this recover and heal quickly! Prayers to all! Blessings!

      @@evamaria7298 Sefton and his troop were caught in an IRA bombing in Hyde Park in 1982. 7 horses were so severely injured that they were euthanized on scene, with Sefton the worst injured of the surviving horses. A police horse named Echo who had been escorting the troop was also injured in the blast, though less severely than Sefton and his troopmates (Cedric, Epaulette, Falcon, Rochester, Waterford, Yeastvite and Zara). Another cavalry horse, Yeti suffered nerve damage in the blast, but no other injuries. Along with the horse injuries and deaths, two troopers died on scene, and an additional two would die of wounds later. Sefton underwent an emergency operation of about 90 minutes to save his life, and would go on to have a total of eight hours of surgery for his injuries. He would go on to make a complete recovery, even returning to service later that same year. He served for a further two years before retiring, alongside police horse survivor, Echo, to the Home of Rest for Horses. Sefton went on to live to the grand old age of 30.
      Sadly, they were not the only horses injured in IRA bombings during that time. One police horse, Albert, retired to Redwings, blinded by the blast he had been caught in. I'm sure there were many others, but I only know of Albert because I got to meet him. My dad formed an instant bond with Albert when we met him, with Albert demanding affection from my dad, who is not a particularly horsey person, but fell in love with Albert at first sight.

    John, you mused about why the horses in your video are unsettled this morning after what happened earlier. I am not proclaiming this as absolute but my thought on it is, horses are VERY sensitive to the energy of their rider. It's possible that there is concern among the guards that is in turn relayed to the horses via the grip on the reins, the way they are seated any little fidgeting that is not the usual norm (as just a few examples). Horses pick up on all of it and as an outside observer, you may not actually see it, but they feel it. Just my thoughts on the matter.

    Ok I had a whole comment written and before I hit send the cat jumped on my iPad and it’s gone. And I’m too tired to write it all again. I will say I wasn’t expecting this when I logged on today, today being ANZAC day, a day that Australians and NZers observe to commemorate those who, initially lost their lives in the Battle of Gallipoli, in the first WW and, latterly to ALL of our service people who have died in all conflicts. It’s also a tragic anniversary for me personally as the day I found my fiancée after he had passed away in his sleep. So you can imagine how shocked I was to see the news about the horses. What an awful thing. Just goes to show, horses, no matter how well trained, are animals and are unpredictable. It wasn’t helped by it being a group of horses that panicked either. Horses, it CANNOT be stated enough, are herd animals. If one in a group panics, so will the others on the theory that “they’re scared and running so “I” should be scared and run too” You asked how you catch a spooked horse John? Well another commenter has already said it better than I can, so I’ll just say, a panicked horse will run till it can’t. By then, if you approach quietly you’ll usually have no issue catching it. Ditto loading. Tbh loading a traumatised horse is often easier than normal because they’re eager for familiarity. So glad to hear they’re all back and under vet care now and that the troopers weren’t seriously hurt
    And sorry John, but your lack of “horse sense” is on display today(not your fault at all, you’re learning) Yes the horses are upset….ofc they are, their people are upset, so THEYRE upset. I don’t think the trooper being thrown came as a surprise to anyone who knows horses….again, horses are herd animals. Their survival depends on picking up cues from their herd, and today, much tho they LOOK calm, the troopers are on edge…..how can they not be?. The horses are picking this up. Note he was easy enough to catch. Glad to hear the trooper is ok…..I’m not surprised it took a minute to get up….he was probably well and truly winded. It’s a long way to fall wearing all that gear, and while I “get” the applause…….honestly? WORST thing to do….these horses don’t need loud noises right now. You saw how they reacted. I applaud them trying to carry on as normal because routine is good for settling the horses too, but I’m not sure it’s gonna work. I have to say I’m a little offended by the papers calling the hoses bolting a “rampage”. it was nothing of the sort. It was scared animals running away from something scary. The fact that at least one was caught by a member of the public should prove that. Poor horses. I wish the horses and the troopers speedy recoveries.

Thank goodness for the likes of yourself Jenn and some others who talk sense without the hysterical , overly dramatic comments , " something in the feed or water upset them , silent dog whistles " to mention just a few ! Oh dear ! Of course the Troopers are on edge after what happened to their colleagues and horses , only natural and of course that passes on to the horses they and the Troopers are part of the herd , what affects one affects them all . The loose horse , someone said was Wrangler headed towards the tunnel and the stables , a place of safety and familiarity for him . Poor Trooper must have been thoroughly winded , any fall does that but when wearing the cuirass , wow ! Like you I can understand the applause , I'm sure the Trooper appreciated it , if he even noticed 😊, but not a good time . As the day progressed things could only improve , back as soon as possible to a normal days routine soldiers ! Must have been a squash in the stables and hard when the Blues rode back in ! Right checking where the cat 🐱is before I press send 😂😂 Take care and have a good day xxx

      Thank you Kath…..yeah it’s not my favourite day of the year. My partner was a huge animal lover too. This would have upset him too. And thank YOU for your well thought out and reasoned comments…..honestly some of the hysterical comments made in these situations are scary. I’m pretty sure that some just saw the pictures and went for it!!!

    I was waiting for your update on this story, since it came across my feed this morning. I'm sure everyone involved, horses included, are quite shook up. Fortunately, I don't think it likely the grey is seriously injured, as it was still running. The injury probably looks a lot worse than it is, horses are made of much tougher stuff than people might think, thank goodness. A few stitches, maybe some bute, and perhaps a little box rest or field turnout during its recovery, and the horse will be right as rain in no time, I'm sure.
    Edit: Regarding catching loose horses:
    - you catch them when they slip and fall and they're fairly easy to grab as they get up, and usually want some good reassurance and comfort after their great escape
    - you herd them into a manageable area where they're contained and can't run anywhere else, and then work to calm them down and catch them up
    - you wait until they calm down themselves, and gather them up then
    most other options would be considered extremely risky, and unlikely to be attempted, except where the risk to life is extremely high.
    Edit 2: Loading the horses once you have them rounded up probably isn't too difficult. I've certainly loaded horses that didn't want to load, and it takes time and patience and persistence, and sometimes physically lifting each foot onto the ramp, but almost all horses can be loaded up with a little care and knowledge.

      Not so sure about the grey. Panic can result in animals(that includes people) not even noticing injuries that at other times would immobilise them. Hopefully that isn’t the case here tho.

      @@paulinemegson8519 While this is true, I'm inclined to believe based on the footage I have seen that the grey has an ouchy leg (but probably not broken), and some lacerations to the neck, chest, and possibly head. It is probably quite badly bruised around the chest and shoulder area too. Generally, these will be recoverable injuries with a little TLC, some pain management, possibly box rest, and some wound cleaning and stitches, based on my experiences with both my own horses, and horses I've worked with. Blood always looks so much more dramatic on a grey than on a darker horse, and it doesn't appear to have lost a substantial amount of blood, and I'd fully expect that if the horse had broken a bone in its injured leg, it would have come to a stop much sooner, and showed obvious signs of lameness when it contined to bolt.

    The video showing the horses running down the street with the white covered in blood down the front of him. We live in NW Illinois USA and it has hit the network news which goes entire country. The white horse was running with two others at full tilt, but the injured horse with the blood did look a bit horrific from the white background. I hope the trooper is okay as well as the the horses, especially the visibly injured one.

    Good evening John, thank you for todays video!
    As a “Dutchie” and a teacher, I do understand the value and importance of history, honor and duty, and the traditional aspects and habits you have in the UK.
    As a matter of fact, because of your video’s, John, I got inspired and learned a lot more about it!
    But…. Is it nowadays a responsible job to maintain at Horseguards? With all the tourists who think they are in Disneyland and have no clue what’s it about? The traffic with all the buses, bikes, cars, not to mention the demonstraters who really upset the horses…. I can understand they are fed up with it and I cannot blame them. We had to wait for accidents and incidents like this. It is a difficult situation….

    I remember going to London a few years ago and talking with one of the armed police officers. He was one of the nicest people I have ever met. Such a responsible job, I won't ever forget that guy, he restored some of my faith in the British police.
    Also lovely to see the king's guard and all the troops as well.
    Thanks to all these guys and the police and military horses and dogs for their service to our country.
