Drums first has been the nicest lil cheat code for hard to flip samples, you’ll find parts you’d never think of using when the drums are already there and you’re building around them
some of the best emotional moments ive found have been when I reverse a track over already made drums. the hits of the drums structure the melody and help find moments of melodic impact.
Funny enough tons of pros have a setup just like this, it’s all you actually need unless you want to specialize in audio engineering or recording performances
Doing drums first is so fun, especially when using loops. I think its very cool to look how things can sound with different melodies but the same drum patterns.
that melody in the drums first vid with metro is cold too, I really need a 808 vid on landing some great bass lines cause your bass notes and rhythms just always hit. This beat came out iconic af btw.
i love these videos. please don’t look at the gradual drop in views per vid, that’s normal. the real fans really appreciate this consistency, and it seems like you have fun just recording yourself doing what you love to do too :)
If you’ve never used a MacBook, it takes 5 minutes before you forget you don’t have one. I’ve put hundreds of hours into Minecraft on my MacBook without a mouse lol.
@@teayuja123 For real bro, the only minor inconveniences I’ve had even gaming on the track pad is scrolling. In Minecraft you use the mouse wheel to navigate through the hot bar of items and I found it more reliable to use the number keys. Everything else is perfect.
I know I ain’t the guy you asked but I still wanna give some input. From a practical standpoint I think the best thing you can do to improve, is finish and export everything you make to a folder even if it sucks. Listen back to your music without your DAW, and diagnose problems 1 at a time. You might think “man this sucks, the melody sucks, the drums suck, the mixing sucks” and get overwhelmed but pick ONE thing to improve and ignore the rest. Keep finishing and exporting music. In no time you’ll see improvement in that one area, and you can move onto another. When you delete a bad beat you delete your chance to analyze what to fix. From an emotional standpoint, just hang it there and know it’s normal and we all deal with it. Don’t compare yourself to pros just compare yourself to where you were last month. You’ll get there.
@@nuh-uhbro765 thank you bro this feels like a very solid answer, actually not been finishing beats recently so i would never give them a chance and thus give myself a chance to analyse and improve
Both are super valid it just depends on the style. In my experience whichever you start with ends up being the part that takes up most of the frequency spectrum. If you want to make a melodic beat you need to start with that so you have all of the room in the world to layer sounds and counter melodies, then the drums need to be stupid simple. If you start with drums you can go crazy with your kick drums, 808s and percussion, but now you only have room for a simple melody with few or no layers.
You might already have a workflow like this, but do you already have a FLP template with stuff already routed to the mixer? And plug-ins already loaded into those tracks? I'm trying to make my workflow better and I'm thinking of already having a preset arrangement. That way I can just plug and play sounds and everything is already arranged.
@@abelanc1090 I meant like having EQ's already setup for certain sounds. Like I have one for a Melody bus to cut out the lows, ready to go. All I would have to do is enable it. Just cutting down on setup time and trying to min-max beatmaking. LOL!
Quick question Nick, I've been learning beat making for about a year now and still having two problems: I don't know how to accurately transfer my ideas to my daw and also dont know how to lay leads, chords and such. But when it comes to making entire beats out of samples, I'm quite good at that. Should I stick to making rap and trap beats from samples or learn music theory for a while? If Nick doesnt see this, can someone more experienced please respond?
you can play to your advantages if you want to lock in on that and get more beats done easier it sounds like. if you want to learn how to get your ideas from your head to your daw try beatboxing or voice memoing yourself singing the melody or beat you are trying to make and then try matching the notes to that. Or try to find the sound selection you are looking for first
Lowkey man most professional producers aren’t even pros at mixing. Your mix just needs to be good enough for the artists untrained ear to buy it, then it’s up to them to get the entire song mixed professionally once they’ve recorded their vocals.

Fun Fact: Nick started the Purple Moncler beat with drums and 808 first.
Love doing drums first cuz I can completely switch up the melody
drums first is a cheat code i jus did my last two beats like that after watching the hitgirl video
DRUMS FIRST IS INSANE, I tried it since I started being serious on learning production and man feels like a cheat code when you get the proper skill
Zaytoven is the 🐐. I didn't know that he starts with drums, but it makes sense cuz his beats have crazy bounce.

When I have "beat block" I do drums first then drag a sample in or try playing to it. Not being a musician makes it funkier 😂
