Hello The Skeptical Hillbilly ! Nightwish fans here, your musical quest summoned us.
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band, performing at Wacken Open Air in 2013, together with Floor Jansen, the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K+ audience.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
As I saw, you liked the powerful performance of the band. Hope you'll continue on this path.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [The 1st Bassist of the band was Sami Vanska, he was with them until 2001. The 2nd one was Marco Hietala, as Bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least - we'll see what the future brings to us. Then very recently (May 2021) Jukka Koskinen became the 3nd Bassist of the band, for at least the Human :II: Nature tour] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.

It's not even a "Guilty Pleasure" for me anymore. It never gets old watching people experience Nightwish and our Valkyrie Goddess Floor and be blown away. I promise you wont regret going down this rabbit hole buddy. I also was raised in the 90s. Grandparents played country and parents Rock and Rap and R&B. A lot of music today lacks substance but it's groups like this that saves it for me. Now with that being said if you want to see that singer go into a 90s country vibe look up "Floor Jansen about love i don't know a thing" if you think this made you a lil bit emotional then prepare yourself. Floor can make anyone cry. If yall agree with me that he should react to that song because he enjoys country like this comment. I would love to see you enjoy watching Floor go through many genres brother✌✌

This music is known as symphonic metal. Like you, I don't usually listen to metal. In this case with the fabulous Floor Jansen I can't help myself. 😁 I'll leave suggestions for other Nightwish songs to one of the Army of fans. I do want to suggest you try listening to Floor with opera singer Henk Poort singing Phantom of the Opera on Beste Zangers. It's an absolutely fantastic performance! Cheers, Steve

Any song with Floor singing is their best song, but I’d recommend these from this same Wacken 2013 show: Song of Myself, Storytime, Everdream, and Romanticide. That’ll get you started.

Welcome to NW The Skeptical Hillbilly, you just met our 6ft Queen Floor Jansen (Dutch) 3rd and current frontwoman of the Finnish Symphonic Metalband NW. She is incredible. 10 Months erlier she came as a substitute for Anette Olzon, who became sick in the middle of a world tour and had to go to the hospital. NW called Floor and she said yes. She had to learn the setlist in 48 hours (there is a documentary about that) and did this on the flight from the Netherlands to Salt Lake City, where she joined the band on their way to Seattle for the next concert. GLS wasn't even on the list, but because she loved this song so much, NW put it on the list. The last part of the song the previous singer(s) didn't do, so she made it her own, with as result 10 months later at Wacken 2013 this MASTERPIECE. When she belt so high, you get shivers or goosebumps we call that a FLOORGASM. Congrats with your first one. The genre is known as symphonic metal, a mashup of metal music and classical music. However Nightwish is a genre in its own right. When you asked for their best songs, well that narrows it down to about a 100 give or take a few. Their sound is consistent, but they range from thrash/death metal to jazz to Celtic folk metal, to soulful ballads, fantasy inspired power metal, to rocking it out grooves.

Nightwish Army Arkansas division reporting in. Enjoyed your reaction and glad you gave it another shot. Skynard is a fair comparison i think, with their multi instrumentation and storytelling. Its a deep rabbit hole with so many good songs to get to, but if you want to hear Floor sing right to your soul like Allison Krauss then be sure to check out her version of Shallow on the Beste Zangers show. As for classic rock, she did a cover of Heart's Alone on her RUclips channel that i enjky more than the original.

The Nightwish Wacken 2013 show was mind blowingly perfect, you can't go wrong with it. There are many other versions worth watching though each for their own reasons. Enjoy your Nightwish journey. No song will ever be what you expect with Nightwish.
there certainly are a lot of different metal genres, and screaming/growling are definitely part of many of them. but as you discovered here, there are also many genres and bands that don't do or do very little of the screamy vocals, and stick to clean vocals with just the awesome heavy music behind it that makes you wanna rock! Nightwish is mainly symphonic metal, a mix between heavy metal riffs and orchestral music. they have heavy metal songs, rock songs, ballads, folk songs, epic songs, you name it! all of them however have the same foundation, the mix of metal instruments, the composer Tuomas' magic keyboards, orchestra and divine vocals. their sixth member Troy you haven't met yet, he is a multi-instrumentalist that plays bagpipes, whistles/flutes, guitars, bouzouki... you name it! and he sings as well. he's often featured on their more folky songs, but also a lot on songs from their newest 2 albums since he joined the band.
@skepticalhillbillie, Nightwish with Floor Jansen captures the heart of youth (as you can see by the audience in this epic legendary concert), of millennials, of middle agers, of people a little older like me( grew up in the classic rock era 60s 70s 80s) and people my seniors. Floor Jansen is called the Valkyrie Goddess of Metal and Empathy. Floor Jansen is a soprano, with a range of more than 4 octaves (Eb2 to F6)
Jansen was the singer of the Dutch metal band After Forever from 1997 to early 2009. From 1999 she studied at the Rockacademie in Tilburg with classmates Jacqueline Govaert and Danny Vera, where she graduated in 2003. In addition to her activities at After Forever, she gave singing lessons. She plays guitar, piano and flute. On May 5, 2010, she presented her new band ReVamp, which was disbanded in September 2016.
From 1 October 2012 Jansen replaced Anette Olzon as singer of Nightwish during the Imaginaerum World Tour. On October 9, 2013, it was announced that she would be the group's regular new front singer. In 2015, Nightwish released the album Endless Forms Most Beautiful with Jansen as lead singer. Nightwish's second studio album with Jansen as front singer, Human. :II: Nature., was released in April 2020.
This was recorded at the 2013 Wacken ( pronounced Vahken) Open Air festival in Germany in front of an audience of 82,000 people. The fiery bull head is the symbol of the festival. Our Metal Mozart Tuomas Holopainen (founder, leader, keyboardist and songwriter of Nightwish) is the main composer for Nightwish.
Tuomas the keyboardist writes about 95% of Nightwish songs, music and lyrics. He also composes the music for the backing track they use. It is recorded in London with musicians from The London Philharmonics. Pip Williamns helps with the orchestration. There are two London based choirs too on the backing track, the other one is a children's choir. And of course with a synth you can do a lot. You’ll find that Marko Hietala "the Viking" ( a Finnish heavy metal vocalist, bassist and songwriter) is also a great singer.

You have now heard some of the skills our 1.83m Dutch Valkyrie Queen Floor Jansen has to offer as the third and present singer of Nightwish. No need to be 'Skeptical' about Nightwish with Floor. Just wait when she gets in full Dutch Windmill mode with her hair. She added the ending herself and this song has become their anthem since. As I am a Flooraholic from Utrecht, The Netherlands, here is some background information on her.
She joined the band 'After Forever' in 1997 at the age of 16. My favourite song is 'Energize Me'. They made a very beautiful music video out of that. Floor attended the then new Rock Academy in 1999 and graduated in 2003. She also spent some time at the Conservatory to learn some more classical singing. 'After Forever' disbanded in 2009 and Floor started her own band 'Revamp' from scratch. Here she experimented with different vocal styles within one song, such as from full operatic to serious growls in seconds. The songs 'Disdain' and 'Wild Card' are good examples.
Besides managing a band on her own she also did a lot of vocal coaching and as she is a perfectionist, she wants to do everything at 100%+. Eventually she had to pay the price and got a burnout. She had just recovered when end of september 2012 the call came from Nightwish to fill in for the remainder of the North American Tour at first as their second singer Annette got ill. Floor had just 48 hours to learn the whole setlist. There is a documentary made of this world tour ('Please learn the setlist in 48 hours'). The lyrics of the songs of Nightwish are very poetic and the music as a whole is very challenging, but Floor pulled it off and she stayed for the whole world tour, culminating is this iconic Wacken 2013 Open Air festival which set new standards in Open Air concerts. It was obvious that the match Nightwish and Floor was made in Walhalla, so she became a permanent member of the band as the relationship between Nightwish and Annette was strained even before she got ill.
Floor continued to perform with 'Revamp'for a couple of years, but it became clear that she could not combine the two for much longer, so 'Revamp' disbanded in 2016. Floor did a side project called 'Northward' where she dived into the Hard Rock scene. The song 'While Love Died' is a must see.
Her stunning performances on the Dutch TV show 'Beste Zangers 2019' gave her at last some more recognition in her home country where she was relatively unknown until then. There are numerous guest appearances with other bands to find on RUclips. To see how to get a crowd of metalheads silenced and in awe watch her featuring with the band 'Epica' and the song 'Stabat Mater Dolorosa', and to see her in full opera mode, watch her rendition of 'O Mio Babbino Caro' from Puccini.
As live concerts were cancelled and home isolation due to the Covid situation, Floor discovered RUclips in the last year and a half and uploaded many interesting videos on her channel. Mindblowing covers, chats with her idols and other singers, vocal masterclasses, personal insights and so much more. She even made a video reacting to herself singing this at Wacken. Floor is a high sensitive person, so peace and quiet is as important for her. Living by the woods in Sweden with her husband Hannes Van Dahl (drummer of the band Sabaton), daughter Freja (turned 4 years last march), a horse and pony, a dog and a bunch of cats, she found this.

What their "best song" is would be difficult to say: First, what are your criteria? How do you measure goodness? Second, Nightwish are (or Tuomas, the keyboardist, is) as a rule so consistently good and convincing in their songwriting that it is hard to single out one song. They cover quite a lot of genres too, they're quite a genre-bending band, hovering somewhere between metal, prog rock, folk and movie score-influenced music. (While the genre is called symphonic metal and Nightwish helped found it, they have gone beyond that genre somewhat in several directions.)
So I think it would be best to think of a representative (as I said, the "best" is difficult to say) song from each of the directions that they've gone in, but that listing a song here does not mean that there are no better songs from them in the same subgenre; if I were to include every song that I think would be worthy of being included in this list, I would sit here all day and exceed the maximum YT comment length several times over. The older I get, the more I realise I've been lied to about many things, especially from society and governments and medical professions and scientists and food industry and TV - all full of lies and deliberate misinformation to control the herd and to make money.
Music industry is no different, namely being record companies, streaming services and radio stations.
Nightwish is what I like to call Life Metal, as opposed to Death Metal, which is probably more what you think of when thinking of metal music being 'the devil's music'. Discovering Nightwish opened my world up to a whole new music experience and appreciation of Metal music in general. These guys are artists too. Sure, the growling is not my cup of tea either, but I can now listen to it and enjoy it when it is sparingly added into music to help tell a story or add some contrast.
I am convinced that Nightwish music has healing properties for the soul, especially when you start delving into the lyrics :)

I was raised in an area where Country, Gospel, and Bluegrass music were the most prevalent genres and if you liked anything else, you were a bit of an outsider/weirdo and listened to "devil music." I just wanted to say welcome to the wonderful world of Nightwish! I've been a fan of them for years, after randomly picking up their album, "Dark Passion Play" at my local Walmart and buying it without ever having heard of them before. That was 2008 and I have never regretted going down the rabbit hole! My advice, as a long time fan, always watch "live" videos. Their albums are absolute works of genius, don't get me wrong, but their live performances, especially since Floor Jansen joined, are masterful! Especially Wacken 2013, Wembley 2015, and Tampere 2015, you can't go wrong by watching anything from those shows! But honestly, you can't go wrong watching anything Nightwish, period! lol I hope you continue to enjoy the music!
Welcome to the Nightwish Army - you're among friends, and you're about to embark on a fantastic journey. Every musician in this outfit is world-class. And you haven't heard all of them. Tuomas Holopainen is arguably the best composer of this era. Some call him the Metal Mozart, but he is beyond that - you can hear the influences of Sibelius, Nielsen, Karl Orff and Ralph Vaughn Williams in his work. Tuomas is above all else a poet. He is a very learned man and he has a fierce thirst for acquiring comprehension.
Both Tuomas and Floor have said that they are "high sensitives". I believe that they are in fact empaths, and that is not an easy existence for anyone so cursed and blessed. You feel the best and the worst of everything from everyone unless you develop a strong enough filter to allow you to survive day to day. This is one of the things that make Tuomas' compositions so hard-hitting, so epic. Tuomas feels so deeply of the things of this world, and this world has not always been kind to him. His genius and his art is that he can share his experiences with us.

It’s "Symphonic Metal." There are many fine bands in this genre, all worth checking out, but this version of this band, with these members are the absolute panicle.

Just FYI, that’s about 70 minutes into the show, and Floor had been killin’ it the whole way already. Also, that’s 82 THOUSAND people hanging on her every word; so, no pressure on her to Bury that (9 second long)high note.... At 6’1 and 170 pounds Floor is a smiling, singing, dancing, enchanting, stage commanding Valkyrie Goddess, and to me at least, a gift from above. Seeing the whole video of this concert, Especially the Floorgasm changed my life. It made me start listening to music again. I love watching these reaction videos and my biggest hope is that people follow and enjoy the Symphonic Metal path I was led to. Welcome to it.

THe son of a Okie here. My dad was an old school country fan. Alabama and the Oakridge boys were some of his favorites. I grew up a 90's metal/hiphop head and he did not like my music at all. I was always pretty diverse in my fandom. I did enjoy some heavy classical misic. (BTW did you know that Garth Brooks is one of the original Metallica fans?) I heard Nightwish first in 2004 when they got some radio play on my local rock station. I wasn't too keen on the vocals as i thought it was too light and operetic. Then 2014 came along and i saw this very video. I was hooked. She can do it all. From Growling to opera. Shes crazy talented. and the band is insanely talented too. THey do scream in one song but they do it in a way that is really cool and easy on the ears. . That song is called Yours is an empty hope. Its about Internet trolls. Enjoy your jourmey.

When this was recorded Floor had been the replacement singer of Nightwish för just about 10 months. She did her first show in Seattle Wa on Oct 1st 2012 after the band fired Anette, their second singer. This was recorded Aug.3rd 2013.
This song wasn't on the set list for the tour originally since Anette didn't have the vocal ability to perform it. But Floor had heard the song when her first band After Forever" toured with Nightwish when Tarja, their first singer, was still in the band, and she loved it. So Floor asked Tuomas (the guy behind the keyboards) if they could make it a part of the set list. And they did. There's som minor variations in the backing between Floors and Tarjas version, mainly that the choir have been reduced in volume. There's a video on youtube from, I think, Argentina, recorded Dec15th 2012. And there's one of Tarja doing it too. All their songs are amazing, soundtrack-like ones from 'The Poet and the pendulum', 'Creek Mary's blood', 'Sahara', 'Pan', 'Shoemaker' to nearly acoustic ones 'The islander', 'Turn Loose the mermaids' or the catchy ones 'Amaranth', 'Nemo', 'Dark chest of wonders', this is one of the best bands ever and they sound as great live!
Classic and modern music often does work well together if they share a stucture. Metal and opera actually are very similar, its just different instrument. Try something like Dimash singing Olimpico, its fully operatic (with his INSANE voice) and a rocky/modern arrangement.
Glad to see you found Nightwish! Floor Jansen makes them better than they were before. Check out Floor Jansen on Beste Zangers (season 19) on RUclips. She sings several different styles of music in multiple languages, and she is amazing on all of them. Her renditions of "Phantom of the Opera", "Winner" and "Shallow" are great. "Slaying the Dreamer" from Buenos Aires is good too.

Everything they do is amazing, there's nothing Floor can't sing, from full blown growl to opera. She is truly one of a kind, and we are so lucky to have her bring Tuomas's masterpieces to life. Every song is worth checking out but you might enjoy an acoustic version of how's the heart with just Floor and Troy 😁

That's such a great and genuine reaction. I wish you good luck and hope you enjoy exploring the rabbit hole that is Nightwish & Symphonic Metal. They have an extremely broad spectrum of music, all made with great passion and talent, but if you ever find a song that you didn't personally like, you can pretty much rest assured that the next one will be entirely different, and you never know what's next with Nightwish.
Isn't it wonderful, how a single song can alter somebody's entire view about music? This is really the PERFECT song to introduce anybody to the world of Metal as a genre.
Tuomas Holopainen (yes, that is the correct spelling of his name, he is from Finland) is the keyboardist and he is the heart and soul of Nightwish. it's HIS band, all of the ideas in building the band and the music are his brainchild. He writes and composes something like 98% (maybe as low as 95%) of their music (they have done a few covers here-and-there, which are also AMAZING).
There is NO other band with THAT SPECIFIC sound, although there are a couple of other bands that helped Nightwish to build what is now known as Symphonic Metal. Nightwish are almost a genre of their own, though. As soon as somebody tags the band in a specific genre, they do something else entirely. You can't really pin them down to any one thing, they defy the cookie-cutter at every turn. It's EXCITING because you will be AT LEAST surprised, if not amazed, with every song you run across of theirs. And of course, they are now very well known for their LIVE performances, they HAVE to be among the greatest live bands on Earth, absolutely World-Class. :)

This entire concert can be reacted to from the beginning, one song at a time. There are no bad songs and each one you hear will become your new favorite. That might sound ridiculous but we have seen it over and over again. This is a live band. This is a rarity that the live music is better than the engineered versions. Stick with live.

This performance was for around 85k or so ppl. For Floor, no problem even though she was not feeling well. The whole concert was epic and flawless... especially considering it is live . But for our valkyrie queen ... effortless.
The first version of Ghost Love Score you did wasn’t the wrong one! Just a different singer. Equally brilliant and talented, but they each have their own strengths. Tarja’s dark and velvety operatic tone is so gorgeous and uniquely hers, but I do really love the dynamics and versatility Floor brings to this song! For another Tarja masterpiece I recommend Nemo, and I’m sure everyone else has given you PLENTY of Floor suggestions so I’ll digress!
I’m gonna tell you a little more about the genre tho! This is called Symphonic Metal, characterized by the blend of electronic and classical instruments, the choir elements, composition influences from classical music and film scores, AND having a female vocalist, which was much more rare in the metal scene before this genre rose up.
The two biggest names you need to know for this genre are Nightwish and Within Temptation. Both started in 1996 and were pioneers of the genre along with other groups that popped up at the same time. And because of their success as female-fronted bands, it became a hallmark of the genre and an inspiration to groups that came soon after like Floor’s previous group After Forever and Simone Simons’ Epica. Another name you should know is Anneke van Giersbergen and her former group The Gathering. While not strictly classified as symphonic metal, they were kind of a precursor to it’s definitive sound and Anneke is widely considered the “godmother” of the genre. Together, these women are who you’ll often heard referred to as the “five queens of metal”-or the Four Dutch Queens, without Tarja (she’s Finnish).
Highly recommend checking them all out if you want to explore the genre more, and since Within Temptation is my heart and soul, I will shamelessly plug some of their songs:

Sharon has a really beautiful clear tone to her voice with absolutely gorgeous belts and crystalline high notes. Like, people call Floor a Valkyrie and Tarja a goddess, so Sharon must be a siren. Or maybe an angels. She’s also unique in not having any classical voice training like the others, and Within Temptation is really distinguished by their versatility and the social messages in many of their songs.
