Thank you so much…you answered so much in this video (intentionally and unintentionally). So grateful for your skills and generosity! -- from a beginner Cave Woman Drummer ☺️
In a previous video, you talked about triplets on the bass with a jazz swing on the ride. This was the best thing I have ever learned to improve my bass speed.
I was really hoping today's lesson would be on the kick drum foot. I was having some issues integrating my right foot into grooves and also with right foot precision (especially dynamically). So this lesson was spot on for me. A HUGE THANK YOU TO STEPHEN for another wonderful lesson.
Yea i was stuck on trying to find hacks / gimmicks / short cuts. My basic approach was wrong, and this video helped me to get going on a different approach. THANK YOU STEPHEN!!
Great comments about making the practice not just in time, but even dynamically and RELAXED. I frequently notice I'm tensing somewhere, or everywhere, when I'm "pushing" something in my practice playing. It's always a sign to me to back off a bit.
Thanks for breaking down these tips and practice techniques. I started playing year or so but have gotten away from practicing so seems like I need to start over. Glad of your videos and advice.
added tip, Practice this even when you away from the kit at work, or on commute. Even on a flat floor - both with heel down and with your heel raised (tapping the front foot down) This burns even more, especially when you do it intentionally for extended periods.
Thanks Stephen! Very timely as I am planning to start training my bass drumming. So far your free guides and videos are very helpful in my journey. Really appreciate it.
A great song for practicing kick drum endurance is Drain You - Nirvana. The main groove of the song has an amazing kick drum pattern that feels very rewarding to play, and the build section in the middle will really test how long you can sustain constant 8th notes at 130-140ish bpm for.
Great video…I have the same pedal as you but can’t get the feeling or rebound I like despite many many adjustments… 1-10 what spring tension would you say you’re at? 10 being tightest… also can’t seem to get pedal board height angle either…. Just frustrated…. Thanks man, I always enjoy and learn alot from your videos….
I started learning about 9 months ago. I had lots of time to practice over the winter months. I felt like I was doing great. However the last 2 months I've been so busy with work I hardly practice anymore. My foot speed totally went to shit. I now see how important it is to be somewhat consistent while learning the drums.
@@brianchisnell1548 I searched Google and called a local music store asking if there's any drum teachers in my area. Unfortunately I didn't get any results. I'd have to do video lessons. I'm just learning for the fun of it. I have zero desire to play in a band or anything like that.
I agree. In the end, it comes down to practising singles to a speed that will improve your doubles, but takes 20 minutes to so do! I tend to scroll forward to around three minutes in on Steve's stuff, and then push on to the second last minute.
@@ashleycrashdissinger8021 With likewise due respect, it depends on how much free time you have? Agreed, it doesn't cost cash, but they say time is far more expensive. The principle points are well made, but as an educator for 24 years, I'm not sure the attention span for some is that good. Or is one expected to go back and repeat thus increasing time spent on the channel?
Could you do some videos on.... 1. 20in. PING vs. Ride cymbals? (more below)... 2. your thoughts on the heaviest/thickest weight THIRTEEN inch hi-hat cymbals one can find..? And-- 3. Imagine a Bass foot pedal at rest. Why a pedal that sits with the beater CLOSER to the Bass-head, but LOOSER, may be better than a beater further back with more tension. 4. SIZZLE cymbals-- why does hardly anyone use more than 3 rivets? And why do we only see very narrow/super-lite-weight rivets on cymbals? Why never anything flatter/wider or more like a Penny? or as wide as a Nickel, maybe from a hardware store? And is it better to have all rivets out at the edge, or "vertically" in a line from edge going inwards to the bell? why? 5. Stick definition. Some drummers use TAPE on the undersides of cymbals. Under what conditions or genres would anyone really want this? why? If yer not using just the bare cymbal itself, wouldn't the tendency in most scenario's of drumming to be to lean more towards a bit of wash and rivets, than to use tape? Thoughts? Thanks. These should be some juicy topics.
I have read comments that complain about the length of Steven's videos for his teaching tips. If you take the time to really listen to what he is saying, you would hear wonderful advice and helpful hints. He is a well trained musician. To skip over the talking would be a big mistake for a young drummer.
The only way for a better doubles is you practice and master heel up and down.. i dont care what foot techniques you use but thats the only way you could do it once you master it quick doubles will just comes automatically
What? No magical trick to play painkiller? I thought this video was going to instantly turn me into the master double stroke rolls just be watching it once. So disappointed, sheesh. (kidding)

another excellent lesson from this humble thoughtful plain spoken gifted musical educator.

Excellent! Thanks.
Good Times Bad Times is a great example of doubles, as is How Many More Times. Both songs are from the first Led Zeppelin album
that the hell? just yesterday i was thinking on improving my kick doubles and next day you posted this… you’re awesome man thank u
Mad respect to this guy who teaching us how to double kick in his bedroom slippers.😊
The footwear issue has been addressed previously. Obviously he doesn't care what he looks like

"My Hero" by Foo Fighters is great for this
I love shine by colective soul I can play that it's not hard it's simple and easy

Any suggestions/recommendations as to pedal spring tension or does this matter looking at this from a strengthening perspective?

15 minutes a day is better than 3 hours once weekly. Keep at it!

His videos are always helpful however, they always could be half the length they are. Too much filler.

I respectfully disagree. Feeling like I kinda know him thru his explanations/personal struggles, relaxes me. Plus I'm not paying him by the hour. Lol

I've commented on this before.. knowledgeable, but damn!🤕
1/10 is enough. Tip play 1,5 or 2 times speed
The sticking is a little different (and fun), but if you want 1/8s on the kick (at 120bpm) ....Maps, by the Yea Yea Yeas.

I do REALLY listen. And have praised the principle points, but respectfully disagree on the time needed to make them.
@@warburtonpaul It's free. Perhaps trying doing one yourself!

Heal down?
It's so secret that you couldn't even see the doubles.
I would start with collective soul shine
Now please explain how the hell do i get this to iron maiden level double speed. I can play doubles but nicko mcbrain is on a different level.
Already the neighbor said he hears the boom boom! It must be those aliens underground!
mind reader🤘
Snow Patrol - take back the city, Foo Fighters - let it die, Mumford & Sons - the wolf, The Kilkers - Mr brightside……
wha, you mean Bonzo wont channel himself through me tomorrow night? oh well. back to the practice pad.
The actual video starts right after the 4 min mark. Everything before is just intro, stalling and unnecessary background info.
Thankyou!!

That was 15 minutes too long ffs
Too much droning and dragging. Too time consuming for a simple advice on a patient approach to speeding up on the kick.
