- JATO (acronym for jet-assisted take-off), is a type of assisted take-off for helping overloaded aircraft into the air by providing additional thrust in the form of small rockets. The term JATO is used interchangeably with the (more specific) term RATO, for rocket-assisted take-off (or, in RAF parlance, RATOG, for rocket-assisted take-off gear).
After World War II JATO was often used to overcome the poor thrust of early jet engines at low speeds or for assisting heavily loaded aircraft to take off. For example, the propeller engined Avro Shackleton, when heavily laden with fuel for long maritime surveillance flights, relied on Armstrong Siddeley Viper turbojets for takeoff.
In late 1980 the United States military operation plan Operation Credible Sport was intended to rescue hostages held by Iran using C-130 cargo planes modified with rocket engines to enable a very short take off and landing. The plan was canceled after an accident occurred during a test landing when the forward-facing JATO units designed to slow the aircraft fired before the downward-facing units (designed to cushion the landing) did, causing the aircraft to crash-land.
JATO became largely unnecessary as the take-off thrust of jet engines improved and is now rarely used even when operating heavily laden from short runways or in "Hot and high" conditions. It is occasionally used in exceptional circumstances, on specially equipped, mostly military, aircraft.

2’30" that’s my own JATO take-off from Cazaux Air Force Base some 25 years ago, when I was a MirageIV pilot… some 15 seconds of 5 tons extra-thrust gave me a 65 degrees pitch with constant speed. Thanks Mr Dassault for making suce beautiful planes.
Bob thank you for your comment, it's a pleasure to have you here. 🙂
C'est formidable d'avoir un témoignage comme celui-ci, ça devait être une sacrée expérience !
Holy smokes that's awesome 😎 I was an aviation structural mechanic in the Navy, but worked on h60h helis. Big difference in aircraft style lol. Way to go for you being in that position, and nice job doing it 💪. That must have been crazy awesome. Jets used to take off all day long right behind my squadron, At night it was always mesmerizing to watch the afterburners etc trail them while they took off.
That first LC-130 was one of our planes from the 109th Air lift wing in Scotia, NY!
To be precise, the C-130 employed RATOG (Rocket Assisted Take Off Gear) The canisters were a solid fuel propellant, therefore a ROCKET. The venerable Neptune P2V5, for example, employed Jet Engine (JATO) Jet Assisted Take Off. Your'e welcome.

What an AC-130? Is it the same as C-130?
@@SRC267 a c130 is a transport plane while the ac130 have guns in it and shoots at enemy's at the ground.
The control panel in the C-130 still says JATO on it, not RATO.
Brilliant vid... Great to see the Victor with the system on. The Vulcan was supposed to have had it fitted also.....
2:02 its like a superhero flying then 2:08 realizes he late to the fight 🤣
This is awesome.
It's crazy I've been on those c130s that go to the arctic they're really cool. They have huge sleds that slide over the wheels and of course the jato rockets
America be like:”Hey frank what if we put rockets on a big plane to help it take off from 10 metre runways?”

Just stop
Thing about JATO is, once you light 'em off, you can't turn 'em off. You have to let 'em finish the burn.
Jet assisted take off? I assume you're talking about rocket assisted take off, it actually depends on the type of rocket and the fuel. Solid rockets can't be turned off, but liquid rockets can shut valves
No. The term JATO is ON the rocket bottles, ON the manuals for the bottles, and ON the control panels in the aircraft. The term “JET” refers to the historical use of the phrase “JET PROPULSION” for rockets. As also seen in the famous JET PROPULSION LABORATORY. The term “rocket” was associated with science fiction and fantasy, so the professionals like Robert Truax always used the term “jet propulsion” when referring to rocketry. The more you know.
We wouldn’t have searched this if we didn’t know what jato meant
I didn't know what JATO meant, I just saw a really cool airplane called the "C130 JATO" in a compilation and that's how I got here.

Airforce One is rumored to have JATO tech in case of emergency.
I wouldn't be surprised since a c130 can have it.
Nah it’s too big
Nope. The basic systems and configurations of the Air Force One airframe are well known, the only classified stuff is in the radios. Besides, JATO is huge, you can’t just “hide” in a tidy compartment.
Very cool!!!...🤙😎🤘
Now that is a seriously healthy boost.

RATO* it's rockets not a jet engine assist
Areojet, who manufactured the rockets called them JATO rockets…
WRONG unless you’re referring to UK usage, like RATOG. The term JATO is ON the rocket bottles, ON the manuals for the bottles, and ON the control panels in the aircraft. The term “JET” refers to the historical use of the phrase “JET PROPULSION” for rockets. As also seen in the famous JET PROPULSION LABORATORY. Isn’t it fat Albert?
Jato rules!!
jato is very cool to make it short
Can they add Jet assists in commercial planes ??, for example in the hudson river crash if jet assists were installed the plane could have landed at the airport...
Well they aren't "jets" they are bottles of jet propellent and that's were the name came from and they are single used once you turn them on you cant turn them off since they are in essence solid fuel rockets and they only stop producing thrust once they run out of fuel so after takeoff they are jettisoned so they wouldn't have helped sully return home. The reason you cant put them on airliners is because they in essence are bombs that explode in one direction and slowly so if one fails like Challenger's booster did it would ignite the rest of the boosters and cause a pretty bad accident. And their purpose is to help take off quickly so they are at an angle so even if they could be re ignited and they weren't jettisoned they would cause the aircraft to be very hard to control because they burn all of there fuel quickly to produce a lot of thrust. And you wouldn't even need them on airliners because their only purpose is to help take off quicker and on shorter runways so there good for transport aircraft like the C-130 that are very big and need to lift a lot but if you need to take off on a shorter runway (look up Lukla airport) with an airliner you can use a STOL (short take-off and landing) plane like the De-Haviland Twin Otter that can take off extremely quickly so you dont even need the extra danger that JATO adds. TLDR: its way to dangerous when there are better and safer options out there and no it would not help with the Miracle on the Hudson
@@E60foamer holy mackerel... Decent comment, but use some punctuation man!
707 operating out of Mexico City were equipped with bottles at one time. There was an American twin that had as an option jato equipment.
*Can we add jet assists to all vehicles from planes to bicycles?
@@E60foamerWrong. They’ve actually been tested on airliners in the past. And the whole “jet” thing is explained in historical usage of “jet propulsion” in rockets, NOT jet turbine engines.

Are there any example of Western made fighters using JATO or RATO?
I saw the rest of the video and the "Mirage IV" was demonstrated.
That is a French strategic bomber and more of a prevalent of fighter/bombers. Like the F-111,
Thunderbirds are go!
It must have been overloaded for it to still eat up so much more runway after they ignited!!!!!
I watched a YT video of when they tried JATO's/RATO's on Hercules' during the Vietnam war. The idea was abandoned after two Herc's blew up, killing the crew & destroying two aircraft.
You can just use the term JATO, no one uses the term RATO in IRL use. See my other comments

How much more thrust does JATO give the plane

It provides the additional thrust of about 1 more engine, but only for a short period of time

VXE-6
Watch the beginning of Delta Force. You will see how it actually its supposed to be used. To my knowledge that is how it is supposed to be used. This clips are for just for show on the way they are being used.
You couldn't be more wrong. The first aircraft in the video is an LC130 taking off on skis on snow. There's is a ton of drag associated with this so they provide the additional trust to be able to take off and prevent damaging the nose ski from additional abuse
@@junkfoo22 Actually the Jato is not ignited unless the Herk can get the nose ski off the ground/ice/snow during the takeoff run. Too much drag otherwise.

Can't believe you just kinda skipped right over Nam. Is there no footage available of a C-125 fitted with JATO from that era....or did I miss it?
It's Rato to me
What happens to him after they take off do they stay on the airplane? I served in the Marines in 2008 and I know the military waste a lot of money. I wonder if they just jettison them off the airplane afterwards. I see some of these airplanes taking off from airports and I think why didn't they just make the airport longer I mean I've seen a C-130 takeoff and land on an aircraft carrier Look up the video on RUclips so these Rockets aren't needed which leads me to believe it's more needless spending from the military. I could be wrong though. But history is on my side.
It's literally explained in the description. It's for heavy take-off, also there are types that gets jettisoned and some don't.
It depends on which ones the ones we have on our C130 can be reloaded with the solid fuel if one has the means but there about the same cost but not quite as wasteful!!!!!
Indeed you are wrong.

Jets are not rockets. These are rockets.
Jets have an air intake. Rockets don’t.
RATO not JATO
JATO was descriptive of the event, not the equipment. The Jet was Assisted with TakeOff. When the transition in nomenclature occurred I don’t know.
@@logoseven3365 the propeller driven jet? .... right.
@@1979Spica
So the British have something to do with the name change. RATO, describes the mechanism, the Rocket bottles, Assisting in the Take Off process, but JATO describes the Jet being Assisted in Take Off. The time these were explored and employed jets were starting to takeover for reciprocating engines. The turboprop engine of the C-130 is more akin to the jet than “regular” propeller driven aircraft, being small jet turbines with gearboxes added to power the larger propellers.
If you look up JATO pictures it’s painted on the side of the bottles “JATO”, so it is a proper term. Smithsonian Museum has some nice artifacts.
Except the manufacturer of the rockets, Aerojet, as well as the US Military, and Lockheed Martin, all refer to them as JATO rockets. So JATO is not incorrect.
@@phloughtgnarpsehs7263 i know. People love to say or write things wrong, especially in America.
A bit of CO2
If they are using rockets, why don’t they call it rocket assisted takeoff?
Nope. I don't like calling RATO 'JATO'. It's rocket-based or it's jet-based and I don't want 'em confused. I'm confused enough already.
I think MOST of the assist systems have been and will be rocket-based.
Jets in that range of sizes are too complicated to be reliable and might require too much airflow access to be effective. My take on it, anyhow.
You couldn't give an enemy a better target for heat seeking missiles.
when are they gonna shoot you while you’re taking off
Heat seeking missiles will easily take down any plane on takeoff. JATO will actually help you by reducing the time window you are at the height echelon vulnerable to MANPADS, which is the only type of AA missile realistically deployed this close to enemy airport.
BEHOLD THE JATO C-130
