The amount of research done is incredible
With the gatherers hut I believe its the Age of the trees that really make a difference, not just the amount. (didn't see the end of the vid if you covered this!). Great info on fishing huts :-)
Apparently it's if they're mature or not, but I wasn't cutting them down so the value should have gone up year or year instead of down so I think it actually has a lot to do with spawning space. Oh, and yeah, people don't see much value in fishing huts
You can also increase the production by putting houses and storage areas by the work places because they spend a lot less time walking around and more time working. Very helpful video I will defiantly use this.
Great research :-) Thank you!
You are everywhere. Just everywhere.. XD.
I've found that once a pasture reaches max capacity, a single herdsman can manage the whole lot. I usually get 800-1200 mutton or beef per worker this way, which works nicely if you need the labor elsewhere. The only downside to pastures is that they produce zero food until they reach max capacity.
Thanks this video was very helpful, every time i make a new city i always go overblown by putting farms and pastures quite early in the game. This video helped me realize how effective gatherer's, fisherman and hunting huts in getting food.
Great video, thanks for these very helpful calcs. Liked.
I've always built forest nodes containing gatherer, hunter, barn, 5x6 stockpile, forester, lumberjack and lastly roads! Some people also put in 5-6 houses. Definitely need to do some math about it because I've always wondered about the effieciency of said layout. Surely it'll be less than a dedicated space for only one of those resource production buildings, but I got a feeling that it's still better to have a such a conglomerate, as production doesn't seem to be much lower than that of a isolated building.
Don't know if you're still playing Banished but you definitely should download its mods and expansions which greatly increase and truly complete the gaming experience.
I know I’m 4 years late but in case you wanna pick the game back up, I will share what I have noticed in my own saves. You need a forester lodge, gatherers hut, hunting cabin, and herbalist together, I usually place houses, storage barn, stockpile, and wood cutter just out of range and a market right beside those things. They all work together very well. I have mine set to 3 hunters, 2 foresters, and 1 herbalist. This keeps my trees steady, but not overgrown, which takes up very valuable spawning squares. Animals are attracted to the forgeables, so you want quite a few and for them to be slowly collected throughout the year, not all at once. If you don’t have a herbalist, herbs will take up a lot of spawning squares over time. You’ll probably end up with quite the excess of herbs, which is good for trading especially early on, or even later for a little padding. However, that’s just what I’ve noticed, later down the road I want to run some tests of my own.
If you make a farm 8x15, game will tell you to use 3 farmers, but ignore that. 1 worker can usually harvest it all, and it will yield 840 food most years. Even on years where you get an early frost, you still get at least 5 or 600, making it the most efficient food per worker by far. And that's also 7 food per square.
Alternatively, you can make a field 12x10, with 1 farmer, and you get the same results. Farms should only ever be 1 of those 2 shapes to maximize efficiency. You can do max farm size 15x15 with 2 workers, and it's still pretty good, about 750 food per worker. But 12x10 or 8x15 is best.
@ZombieCleo Thanks for the video. Recently got back into this game and still struggling with people starving left and right. Now I have a much better understanding thanks to you.
Thumbs up! Thank you! Time to go back to my town and fix Aaaa lot of things!
I do missed the Orchard info though, I noticed that these tend to supply very low amounts of food. You have no use of them the first 5 years, then you get a peak of food because all trees are healthy. But after a year of 10 I noticed that 50% of the trees are replanted. However, they might be interesting for the food variety of the town.
Very good research. Gonna invest a bit more in fishing. I also question a bit of the analytics with regards to the fishing huts, some had houses and barns near them and some didn't. That has quite an effect on how long they spend away from the docks to pick up tools/food, get warm and drop of their catch. So it isn't just water coverage that effecta the size of the catch
Also,I'm bummed you didn't do anything with orchards. Next time :)
Cleo... Thanx for the vid... I love the way you analytically look at it.. I like playing games working on them like this... I appreciate it very much.. good job and again thanx
Thanks very much, I think this one is really interesting
Actually, from my experience,, you can have one person working the maximum size pasture with approximately the same efficiency. (I've also read you can work 11*11 farm field with just one worker and get the max out of it, but it didn't prove to be right in my playthrough, even if the houses and barns were close to the field).
As for gatherers (and basically for any food source in my experience), the income is somehow fluctuating. One year I can gather much more food than the other for no obvious reason (but maybe there is something I miss).
those fishing docks yields could of doubled if you had put a barn and two house next to them i can get 2000 food from a fishing hut like the 900 one
I think one of the primary reasons why larger farms take longer to harvest and plant is the algorithm. The farmer(s) plant/harvest across one row, then move all the way back to the starting side and begin on the next row. Repeat. (In reality, upon reaching the end of a row one would move up a row and simply travel back to the other side planting/harvest as you go.) So the increased planting/harvest time on larger fields is most likely due to the extra time spent walking between rows. Smaller fields then are more efficient.
I wonder if this effect is dependent on compass point? If so, then very tall (or very wide) fields would mitigate this effect. So an effective break even point might be to use 7x14 or 14x7 fields. I expect that would require two farmers apiece. Worth testing though.
Also, I've had wonderful harvests from orchards. The trick is to max them out. The largest size (15x15) supports 6 workers. I do not think they would rate higher than your top three in either category, but they do produce a significant amount of food.
Thanks for the advices professor! Didn't care too much about gatherers and fishing location, useful statistics
This is all good but the number of workers matters also. As on some of these production buildings diminish takings per worker.
For example, Hunters lodges are better with 2 workers. It depends on range factor but it's usually 600 per worker.
I clicked because of the info. I didn't realize I was going to hear Cleo herself, 8 years ago wow!
Nice bit of research there! Thanks for taking the time to go through the experiments and reporting the results :)
And forgot to say: Liked and favorited!
Thank you very much :)
oh! we're going back in time to the spring of '68!! :D
+Khulhu Cthulhu it's easier to save and load the game back if you want to do an experiment at the very best momentum! :)
Khulhu Cthulhu haha, I would tell stories of the time, but you know what they say...
_If you can remember the 60's, you weren't there!_ 😁
I'm 4 years late but.... The food gathered is coming from the forest so, if you have foresters constanlty cutting down trees, they are taking away the source of those resources.
Best and most efficient farm size for one worker is 8x15 or 10x12 so 120 square. It gives 840 food per year with one worker. No need for fish.
What about 11x11? 121 squares and 848 per worker because you only need 1 for sub 126-square fields.
Excellent research...this is going to affect a lot of Banished gameplay
Heh thanks, I just think it's interesting, shame I don't have a free reign mode so I can set up a test how I want it
*****
Hopefully the Dev will open it up for modding etc soon. There are a few things i'd like to see such as flattening small hills and building storage carts etc
Well done. I haven't even played the game (yet), but I wanted to get some tips before starting.
this is the most informative video on banished 👍
The biggest farm you can have with one farmer is 7x8 or 4x14 which is 56 squares. Each farmer can farm 56.25 squares. I think you said it was a 7x7 was the max for one farmer.
My mistake, well that increases the numbers for farms then
Wonderful video and very unexpected results. I would have liked to have seen both Gatherers' Huts and Hunting Lodges near Foresters set to both Plant and Cut to compare your results to. But all in all an excellent job.
Very useful information, and very clearly presented. Thank you for your hard work.
Wow I like the research and math done here. Very helpful!
The biggest question I have is: how much food does it take to feed each person per year? Does age group (worker + educated, worker + uneducated, student, child) affect how much food they use?
Good stuff Cleo, thanks for the data :D
It takes about 100 food to feed each person and no age etc has no affect
AH! I've been trying to figure that out for some time, but my people keep on having them babies, and folks keep on dying. Was unable to get it myself, thanks
Hi clod, I have recently found your channel and I think it is pretty cool. I don't log in to watch videos very often.
Anyways, I have a few questions. I am on a 55 year old banished world, with very little food and people. I am wondering both how you got so much food so quickly as well as people so quickly. Should I just start planting houses everywhere or should I give it a while in hopes to get lots more people. Thanks.
Really good video, thanks
Great job more people need to see this!
Cant thank you enough for your research. Answers all my questions!!
Great Job! Very interesting thing.
Maybe if I place the hunters cabin on the montains instead of flat area, it will work the same way?
Daisy Ridley plays Banished!
Thanks for doing the math.
This is fantastic!
Very helpful. And spelt out like a proper science teacher!
I am a proper science teacher :(
I know :)
***** What do you teach?
I used the seed before for the fishermans hut and was getting over 2k every other year on my world I believe the bridges that are there the problem on that as they cant fish in those stops at all might cover 75% but only like 65% was useable. Would also like to add most farms work better the second year rather then the first just something I noticed when I played
Yes, they do mostly because the season was shorter in the first year
superb video
got a question concerning Banished ..I just placed a milking barn , and realize I need 12 domestic animals..now I got all types of animals ..My question is why isn't my milking barn finishing up building..it stopped at domestic animal..how do I get my animals from the pen into the milking barn..thanxyou
This is excellent. Really appreciate the research.
A lot of work, great job matey.
Erm... Cleo, you forgot Orchards.
True, I sort of lumped them in with farms, they don't produce a lot of food, I use them to suppliment diet for health
for the farms, you can actually make it 8x7 for 1 worker
That was a research well done! My word as a Doctor! Thank you!
But... But... What about... The Orchards?!
This is very helpful for a noob like me! Thanks!
Great work! It was nice to watch this video :D
Interesting and helpful vid, thank you!
I am on an iPad so I cannot edit, but it meant to put Cleo, not clod.
Could someone explain if the "current season" vs "previous season" when clicking on a food production building is a mod or built into the game? It's been a while since I last played and would love to learn more!
Not a mod, it's in the vanilla version.
@@zombieowen So what needs to happen to have it show? Is it a setting? Because I have never seen it.
@@pandagamez8072 There is an "@" symbol at the top of the dialog that switches to that view. It looks greyed out so most people do not notice it.
Love it, very well done ‼ 👏
I'm going to have to check out your other videos.
👍👍 from Bangkok
Great video!! Thanks!
Nice and informative thanks
great video thank you
very nice coverage truly helpfull
Thank you!
amazing guide and sweet voice
Good work Cleo~~
Nice video, lot of information :)
////////That was really helpful, tks much, sure do appreciate the video.
You're welcome :)
I was curious are u still gunna continue your banished lets play series?
Not sure, I feel like I've done as much with it as I can, I might try a new city
Cool story, thanks ;)
in the 5th min of the video there was a ppl who dide because of starvation but how? you had tons of food..
+Daffy because the distribution network wasn't set up properly
nice work , thanks for the info :-)
Cool vid interesting thank you Cleo liked! O_O
Thanks :)
Instructions unclear: city died from starvation year -1
175 food per square? is that right?
Considering it only uses 8 squares of useable land and you can't build on water yes
oh, yes :) tx
Great video. +1
Hi C.L.E.O.! ^_^
Hi
I would love to date you. Intelligence and Diligence is such an attractive quality.
