  • When you talk about the most unfortunate NBA drafts, you have to include 1986. In fact I don’t think there is one that had a worse outcome from it’s top players, all touted as future stars and even game changing generational talents. William Bedford was the 6th overall pick in the 86 draft, a 7’ center that left after his junior year in college and expected to be the next great big man of his time. At least with Phoenix’ only pick in the first round that’s what they hoped. He was selected before 5 all stars and 3 hall of famers, one of 3 7 footers in the top 10, the only underclassmen along with Chris Washburn who too flamed out the league as a result of a cocaine problem. Bedford’s career is filled with promises unfulfilled, being first injured, tearing his acl early in his career, then underperforming with the Suns and traded after just his rookie season, to a garbage time role with the Detroit Pistons in their glory days as the Bad Boy Pistons, being on the team for their first championship, but opening the entire year in rehab. The next year he’d actually be on the team when they won back to back in 1990, playing in 5 games for a total of 3.8 minutes. He was out the league at just 29 years old, still wanting to live a lavish life, and became a drug dealer, doing and selling weed and cocaine, eventually getting caught in Michigan transporting over 25 pounds of weed, along with a few more arrest for drug possession, finally given a 121 month prison sentence he didn’t even realize he had gotten until he got back to his cell and added up the months. 10 years in the feds. He did 9 and change, now living as a food truck driver and convicted felon. From NBA Champion To a 10 Year Prison Sentence! William Bedford Stunted Growth

One of the many tragic stories of the 1986 NBA draft, William Bedford's habits caught up to him and cost him his potential. Good to see he's doing much better now, owning his own business and living a more productive life. But man... the 80s was something else!

As Stunted Growth knows, I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan. Japanese-American and male. I remember that William Bedford had talent, but many off-court problems. In the summer of 1992, Shawn Kemp put on a "Shawn Kemp Classic" at The Coliseum (our home court, at the time). They put the box score in the newspaper the next day. William Bedford hit more than a couple of three-pointers! I also saw that Blazers then-rookie Tracy Murray made a bunch of three-pointers in the game, which got me very excited.

My brother was close with Andre Turn**, and was told they were high as a kite 🪁. And that was the reason they lost. Idk, on paper they should have won and that’s what everyone expected. But Villanova took out the favorites, Georgetown. 🤷🏾‍♂️

Do one for Patrick McCaw, Jerry West’s golden boy that said teams would be “sorry they didn’t take him” played 2 seasons with lack of PT with GS and ghosted the team to get more PT only to go to Toronto with not much more PT and been out of the league since 2021, not to mention deported recently in Belgium.
