Jill Scott originally sang and cowrote the original vocals however Erykah Badu was an established name and Jill wasn't yet an active artist. Love both versions saw Jill Scott live for the first time last night in my home city in Johannesburg South Africa. Magical night front row and miss Scott smiled and me and made eye contact. Crowd showed her so much love and she said "Johannesburg ya'll got me". 5 years ago watched Erykah at the same venue and stage same front row seat. Incredible. Both ladies. We'll never forget. Thank you Chris and Empress
Badu just brings it. What a fabulous artist. Bringing originality and a super suave singing style to the table. How is it that she is both fresh and retro when she sings the same line. She merges past, present, and future in one breath, one line, one song.
The terror in the eyes of the girl in the photograph on the cover is palpable. Poking around google a bit, I found that the picture was taken in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn in 1964 during what became known as The Harlem Uprising, a riot sparked by police brutality. In the aftermath of the riot the mayor instituted a civilian complaint review board to track complaints against the police, but the police union rallied powerful interests against it and it was overturned after only a few months in operation. It would not return for another twenty years. 😡
The original version of this track featured Jill Scott but execs thought it would do better commercially with Erika Badu. Also, the female rapper is uncredited Eve! :)
You seem to like female performers from the 20th century, why not try on some more european acts that were big over here? The Nolans, Nena, Sandra, The Belle stars, Samantha Fox, Maywood and others.
Then it seems I was right in my guess of your interest in 1980's female artists@@EmpressReacts 🙂 Now you have even more european girls to check out, I still couldn't see that you had reacted to Nolans The Belle stars or Maywood. Some other groups are Á la carte, Dolly dots and B*Witched. Carola is a swedish artist that only made one album in the US in 1986, produced by The Bee gees, you can find the videos if you search RUclips for "Carola runaway album".

Oh so this song had a bit of controversy 😂

Agree!
Whole lp is great, what a beautiful tune x
Good R&B collaboration ‼️ It’s a good mixture of The Roots & EB’s sounds. Erykah even gets to flex her rap chops🔥.
They talmbout that’s pitbull in a skirt Eve 😂
@@EmpressReacts 😂Oh not the pitbull in a skirt. Oops sorry bout that, Eve.

Whaaat‼️ Not E-V-E 😂 aaaand this must’ve came out before Living My Life Like It’s Golden 😂
🧡🔥 That's E.V.E. rapping. I remember it was a big debate back in the day about who was the female singing and rapping on this song. TFS!
Oh wow! Was this before she was that girl?
@@EmpressReacts Yeah. I believe it was around the same time her first single/album came out. I think.
