  • Scientists have uncovered 82 pieces of pottery on Jiigurru (Lizard Island) that are dated to between 3,000 and 1,800 years old.
The pottery may have been made locally by First Nations people, making it the oldest - and one of the only - examples of Aboriginal pottery.
What's next? Experts agree more archaeology in the area needs to be done.

Is there a reason why pottery making ceased 2000 years ago, after existing on the island for 1000 years?

We are very lucky to be alive right now. We're witnessing the birth of aboriginal modern culture. The smoking ceremony, the welcome to country ceremony. The paintings consisting of dots. The changing of name places from European to Aboriginal. Aboriginal agriculture. The list goes on. All BS

I call bullshit on this one my family has been born on Australian soil since 1780's and not once have i seen or heard of pottery made by indigenous Australian's,
More then likely of malay, pipany people's,or possibly from melenesian people's or even from shipwrecked survivors
High possibility its from melenesian war parties that raided northern Australia for women from new Guinea

What's the difference between pottery and coincidentally fired clay in a fire pit? Is this not bisque? Of the 82 pieces, 03:56 these are the most pottery-like?

That poetry definitely washed up from elsewhere, aboriginals can’t even make pottery now let alone 1000s of years

Not vacant, just a small number of wild stone age people. And yes, Australia was settled.

@@alfredpinomi6188 no, not in a military sense. it was explored, settled and colonized.... the Abos put up no military defense as they had no capability. The Pilgrims did not invade Massachusetts either.

@alfredpinomi6188 no it isn't...better learn some real history, stop making it up. The aborigines of Sydney cove did not fight a battle, they conversed and were curious about the "white" people. Three natives went to England and met the Queen, wouldn't call that friendship an invasion....do some research! Matey

@OghuzKhan66 well who did invent the wheel...hmmm....Egyptians had potters wheels and chariots over 3000 years ago...and they made pottery, so did the Etruscans, the Greeks etc. And they all had wheels....probably longer than 4000 years ago....New Guinea peoples made pottery but not the mainland australian aborigines they were still stone age people 300 years ago.... and there no horses in Australia then either...is ignorance one of your strong points is it or racism.

The same as every other artifact found on this large continent. We do not know were they came from. I think if this had of been the nomatic tribes that the aboriginal of Australia were, then there would be more evidence around the country. This as most things credited to the aboriginals of Australia can not be verified one way or the other but will not be looked at with a true scientific mind set. There are documentation from early captains logs stating that there were 2 different sized tribes on this land. A pigmy version and what we know as aboriginals. To be honest with how harsh and how far apart the food was scattered in this country i would believe a pigmay race lived here far longer than the aboriginals we now know. As with all tribes there were in-fighting and wars between them. Who is to say the pigmys were not wiped out by the current aboriginals. As we know and have been and are still to this day rivalries between these tribes. That is the main reason why the so called colonisers get blamed for so much aboriginal death. But infact there was still and is still war and rivalries between the tribes. That is the reason there were no treaties or agreements made with the aboriginals of the time. The same as now they cannot agree on anything. If you look at the waring tribes of indian Americans the reason they got a treaty is because they came together realising there was no option but to unit. Try getting the scientific evidence correct and verified by the scientific method before just jumping on the band wangon of false and misleading information. This may have well been a papua-nugini or Indonesian tribe that was blown of course and having the knowledge how to make and use these items.
Especially considering what the weather was like with cyclones and very bad weather. Considering there is evidence in the top end of these people being in Australia over the years.

I have read of the pygmy race also....remains of a smaller race were found somewhere in Indonesia also True no one knows the real truth of the settlement of this land or will they ever
