    The inspiration for the song is actually really cool. The lead singer, Anthony Kiedis was looking through his girlfriend's closet and he saw a jacket he liked (she was a punk rock singer in the '80s), which commented about how cool it was. So she told him to keep it and said, "if you have a closet full of clothes and you try to keep them all, your life will get very small, but if you have a full closet and someone sees something they like, if you give it to them, the world is a better place." So the theme of the song is selflessness and altruism.
    Also, this song is pure unadulterated funk with no apologies.

And yet, your skilled ears wrung more out of this song than I expected. You're amazing. I think that, sometimes, many people just like introducing you to iconic or favorite songs that are new to you so they can watch you enjoy them, dance, bop, groove vibe, or, yes, even blush. ;) RHCP have a lot of other fantastic songs with a lot more vocal complexity than this one, and I can't wait for you to hear more.

    They were on the Simpsons once playing this song in Moe's bar, and he made them change the lyrics to "what I really want, is to hug and kiss ya" so "everyone can enjoy it". Al's ability to recreate the music and the video on his own, without taking any reference info from RHCP is what's amazing. But I agree with Flea once he heard it: yabba do me... is weak. The overall lyrical content of it is way, WAY beneath Al's talent. But everything else, of course, highlights that he's a vastly underrated genius.

    Thank you for doing this one - some other RHCP songs that I think you could get a lot out of: Zephyr Song, Soul to Squeeze, Otherside. Honorable mention to Can't Stop as this would be a similar vocal performance.

    As a young (relatively. I was in High School) white kid living in Miami, Fl, who happened to be primarily a rap fan when this album came out (1992), the Peppers were a perfect fusion that got me more into rock music. From there I went on to go deep into many sub-genres of rock, like post-hardcore (90's), noise rock, hardcore, alternative, grunge, etc. Guess I've always been really into groove and rhythm over anything else. Guess being a drummer, that shouldn't be a surprise.

    I have a friend whose band re-recorded a lot of songs from their independent releases when they got signed to a major label, and they sanitized and polished a lot of the rough edges that, imo, made the vocalist's signature sound (kinda wrung all the terroir, if you will, out of his sound.) One of the things the new producer "cleaned up" was a quality he shares with AK-- that L' at the beginning of phrases (like in Under the Bridge, instead of a clear "I don't ever wanna feel like I did that day" it sounds like "Lie don't wanna feel." My friend's phraseology had a lot of L' at the beginning of phrases, that the producee thought was sloppy enunciation and had him change it. But, much like AK, there's a heritage of where that comes from-- it's a remnant of the Blues (my friend's band is a Chicago band, so it's all over here, but you can trace AK's funk flavor back to the Blues pretty directly,) and when my husband deep dived into Delta Blues (direct precursor or Chicago Blues, which led to funk,) the L' is like an abbreviated "well," which brought a more intimate, conversational aspect to the music, like you're sitting in a circle of close friends telling a story, and you're inviting the audience into the circle and into your story. It fruatrated me to hear the sanitized version of my friend's major label debut, becausethe producer kind of cleared all the Chicago out of the sound, and I was glad to hear that the Chili Peppers sound was allowed to let that blues funk flavor fly free!

    Anthony Kiedis has a distinctive tone, voice and pitch. RHCP songs go from hip hop/funk to whatever you can think about. All of their albums have a mix of types and each album is unique on its own. I would suggest listening to at least 2 or 3 recommendations from each album to see their evolution through the years.

  • @Grigeral
    @Grigeral 7 часов назад +3

    So with this, it's not really a rolling of the tongue, so much as a slap of the tongue. When you hit the point at "GiveitA-" when your tongue would start to move down for the next letter, you push it down very fast, which both seems to warp the air and gives it that 'ft' sound as well. You should try it, it's fun 😂

      Fun fact, the French are the reason the letter "Þ" was removed from English and replaced with "th" instead. The printing presses primarily made in mainland Europe didn't have the letter "Þ" so they used "Y" instead. That's why you see signs for "Ye Olde Pub." It's supposed to be "Þhe Olde Pub." The French just replaced the letter "Þ" because they can't pronounce the "th" sound. Now the only language that kept "Þ" in their alphabet is Icelandic. They also have the letter "Ð" for a "dh" sound which we also have in English, but we write it as "th". "Þ" is the "th" sound in "thimble," while "Ð" would be used for the "th" sound in "this." It's subtle, but you can't unhear it now that you know it. If we had these letters in English, we would write "this thimble" as "ðis þimble."

    Also, when I was in Spanish class in HS, my textbook included a method to learn how to roll you r's:
    Pronounce the nonsense sounds /petter - o/ faster and faster until you actually start to roll your r's-
    and pronounce the Spanish word for 'dog'- perro.
