I fully agree - even of FM I prefer the squelch off so that those signals right in the back of the box get a chance to be heard (somedays that is all that I get !). With such high levels of QRM on every band and frequency auto-squelch is a real pain . Back in the day with crowded airwaves it would have been a real boon but nowadays where I live it could lose me the one or two decent- but weak - contacts I get each week ! Good stuff as always Fred.

I'm the same way, I never use it either. If I used My squelch, it would cut out a few of the Guys I talk with. Good video Fred, 73's from 151 SC.

Jeah Fred, youre so da..n right!! As you can see in uncountable Videos, its all about getting as far as possible with HF and having great Moments with a new contact, even with weak signals.
Its frustrating when hard trying guys are not heard because OMs have theire Sqelch at the right end.
Your explaination on SSB is full correct. The noise floor on ssb is so low that you can hear stations even under the static. This is so much fun.
If people only want strong signals an high quality Audio they should make a phone call.
I hope my english is understandable and keeps my teacher rest in peace ;-)
Very warm greetings from Germany my friend.
Keep on doing Videos, for you and family 55 and 73

Hi Bud. Your English better than mine :-). I agree. I really find it hard when people comment on the 305 videos saying they were trying to get on the side and we missed them. With a squelch they prob stand no chance at all.

Good video Fred. I seldom use squelch at all. the only time I use it is when there is a terrible amount of noise and I use the squelch to quell the noise when I am conversing with another CB radio operator. I don't mind the radio noise really. I am used to it and you do hear distant stations in the squelch sometimes as well. I fully agree with your take on the squelch usage.

Squelch can be useful even on ssb ,, i use it if you have the rig on a particular frequency waiting for a sked or for propagation to open. You might think things are dead then it comes alive .so you can have silence, just waiting for things to happen, so in that sence it can be very useful. But as you say not much good when in mid contact .

Fame... That was my comment about breaking the squelch.
I use the squelch because I'm mobile and I don't want to be concentrated on trying to hear that back of the box breaker on FM, I also don't want that constant distracting hiss whilst I'm driving.
If I was homebase that would be different.

I always found a lot of stations on UK FM Could be a bit clicky, and deliberately squelch out surrounding breakers... Just my experience back in the day.. As for SSB I always leave the squelch open and use the Hi -cut and NB if needed.. Chers Fred another informative upload, for the newbies. 73s 153AT888

I never use squelch using ssb on the hf bands, there is too much noise and your right, you don't hear perfectly readable contacts, if you've "squelched" out the noise. Reducing rf gain helps reduce noise, turn the rf gain down and the audio volume up. Play with the latter two controls to get the best results.

I never use squelch on AM but for FM, I use my old Pyatt "Superkrunch" box that I've had since the early '80's. It means I can comfortably hear people much further away than if I simply used the normal squelch which would have to be set at a pretty high level to remove the annoying white noise. If I DIDN'T use it, I would have a greater level of white noise from my XYL............

Perhaps someone who has been using modern CB radios recently can comment on this. I have always found squelch to be problematic with distant signals as Fred has mentioned. Most radios i've used once you engage the squelch, there has to be a significant increase in signal to break the squelch. Now i was just testing a 40 year old CB i just purchased and noticed something very interesting about the squelch. It is not a 'hard' squelch. You can put it right at the threshold and most noise will be cut out but you may hear a little coming through at a lower volume occasionally. I think this would mean that faint signals are much more likely to come through and not be blocked like a traditional squelch. This is not the way the squelch works on any recent radio i've used but i think it is a fantastic design for AM CB band. Perhaps this is the way squelch has been designed on CB radios and I just forgot since I hadn't used one in 35 years or so. Can someone comment on this.

The problem with the squelch on a lot of cb radios its based on RSSI signal strength level.Cb radios on FM often do not use Noise Squelch which is a far better system than using carrier signal being less susceptible to opening on noise ,depending on the manufacture design ,but in recent times FM noise squelch has become more popular in some radios. AGC attack\delay can also affect the squelch system especially multi-modes CB where sometimes the design is compromised and there the squelch action can in some cases be a bit iffy on "opening up"quickly on a signal, and often too fast "closing"(hysteresis)
with multi-modes Am needs to be fast open, will some delay after signal
    to allow flutter of signals
SSB needs fast opening but long delay before closing to allow voice "pauses" not shutting the squelch closed to quickly (some sets allow you to alter this feature, some you may have to modify hardware wise to get it right )
FM ASQ(not all uses generally noise squelch SS6900 does)
the SS6900 in pc mode software can be adjusted in the "options screen"
FM SQ Close set 150 mSecs (default)
Am SQ Close set 150 mSecs (default)
SSB\Cw SQ Close set 300 mSecs (changed)
I dont think on the SS6900 menu can be accessed via radio, using the pc software maybe only way Fred, just make sure you READ radio contents, then Save DATA file safe, before modifying
hopefully that will fix SSB squelch issues on SS-6900 ( tested this on a older V3.1 hardware SS-6900 using V1 PC software , but its also supported on V6 hardware\software PC software)
    PC software here V6 SS-6900
    cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0223/4803/8208/files/SS_6900Setup_6.00.exe?537
ull need a pc programming cable
CRE-8900 support this on pc software V3.1.0
SS9900-v4 -NO (have not looked further)
    Lincoln 2+-NO (hardware )
other sets you may need to refer to schematics to alter the time constants on Am,FM,SSB squelch\agc circuits to alter the timing capacitors to get it as you want.
I have successfully done this on the President McKinley Multi-Mode for a much improved SSB squelch action via a simple one capacitor change to add "hang delay" to the squelch switching action .
It works very well and no more annoying noise in background, and plenty of delay to allow pauses in speech on SSB ,before mute cuts in.
If you have the electronic skills and can read schematic's you can have a fighting chance of altering it on your radio.
On old school FM MPT-1320 27\81 some do use FM noise squelch chip part ,so less susceptible to noise spikes opening\closing radio's mute.
some can be altered to improve attack or delay times by altering the "timing values"in the squelch switching circuitry to suit needs.
Spectrum communications in UK sell a retro fit "noise Squelch"board NS-1000
to retro fit into older cb radios
    www.spectrumcomms.co.uk/CB_Kits.htm
some better brand HF hams sets do allow agc delay\mute adjustments within the radios menu system as well.
So there are some solutions to these "squelch"problems Fred
Try the software on CRT SS-6900 it may cure your ssb squelch problem Fred.
For me on FM CTCSS encode\decode is the way forward for CB radio (just like PMR446 system) nowadays ,something i would like see used more\supported on CB radios ,mainly due to "squelch noise burst"drives me "Nuts" when driving through Cities,Towns and even now Countrysides towns!
    All the best,nice Vid
    Rob
