You don't need to turn on the engine to disconnect the airbag, You just release and pull the steering weal toward to you and you will have space to unscrew and release the airbag. Jus disconnect the battery from the beginning.
Yes, you have to, otherwise you will create a conflict to the memory and when you turn on the car you will have problems. Disconnecting the battery will save the set up to the memory.

Instead of disconnecting battery terminal below passenger seat, can you just pull the airbag fuse? I think it's located by rear hatch
