  • Discover how our paper conservation and bindery team are working to treat and conserve 33 albums and over 12,000 photographs that were arranged and captioned by Queen Mary, documenting her life from 1880 to 1952.
Queen Mary was consort to King George V, and these albums detail some of her official engagements and family gatherings over a 70-year period in history.
The albums are currently undergoing conservation treatment to clean and repair the paper, bindings and photographs, and in some instances be rebound to make the albums safer to handle, allowing them to be digitised, researched, and displayed within the Royal Collection for future generations.

Queen Mary has maybe been badly served by her biographers. She was obviously an amazingly clever woman.

I firmly agree with you Queen Mary has been observed and interpreted as a puritanical, tyrannical, and oppressive figure and not the calming and constant presence as the populace viewed her as. As her husband's Queen and Empress Consort, they exemplified strength and courage during the First World War while other Royal and Imperial houses came crashing down they stood firm and strengthened the love and loyalty of their peoples.

@@josegodinezvaliente5140So heartwarming to read your words and I have always been of precisely the same opinion. Queen Mary viewed her position as Queen Consort as a sacred trust from God and as a consequence her accomplished intellect and considerable artistic knowledge were both denied as she dedicated, like King George V, her entire life to one of service and above all else: duty. This noble and selfless concept is so entirely alien to the contemporary world, and most particularly the young, that it is seen as a fault, if not incomprehensible, and thus to be condemned. Would that we all had a character as honourable and dutiful as Queen Mary’s!

The Pope Hennessey biography of Queen Mary is very complimentary. I am listening to it on Audible currently.

I think her official biography and the newest “Matriarch” were very complimentary. I am obsessed with Queen Mary and have found the media portrayals of her to be where the inaccuracies arise. The British Monarchy owes Queen Mary everything. Without her, I don’t think it would have survived.

I have the published version. I love seeing this. I wish some of Queen Elizabeth's personal albums would be published--to see her with her family in the way Queen Mary and Queen Alexandra showed their families would be so nice. I have 4 Royal Collection books--all are lovely.

The price of monarchy from the government is only a small % of the money handed over from the Duchy of Lancaster, & the tax payed on such money…this to pay expenses. The campaign by newspapers to Not repair Windsor after the fire was a great misinformation pr drive by Murdock

Question--I've seen the photo taken at Sandringham, with Queen Mary and all her grandchildren except the Lascelles brothers. Is there a photograph of her with ALL of her grandchildren? I realize the Lascelles were in, or about to be in, the war when Prince Richard was born--just interested.

Given that the trust was probably in existence during Queen Mary’s time, were these ORIGINAL albums bought with an intention of conservation a century later? What types of materials does the Princess of Wales use in her albums to minimize the conservation work 50 years from now?

    • @dragonwitch27

Keep in mind that Queen Elizabeth 2 said her grandmother was the most influential person training her to be Queen . So why do we applaud QE2 when she was following Queen Mary's tutelage? I know Elizabeth changed with the times but Queen Mary lost her fiance, husband, son and her other son was such a disappointment she put the crown above family!
