Thanks for doing a mileage run in the Ram again. Interesting that you picked up mpg on the Ram after it's been broken in, even after the modifications. I wonder what it would have got without the modifications.
I’m guessing the speed made a big difference on the Rebel. The first time I think they said they averaged close to 80. This time it showed cruise set at 50 and 72.
Only thing you can really compare the Touareg to in modern vehicles is a V8 grand Cherokee trail hawk with air suspension. That would be a great match up
Elevation of Denver Colorado 5280', elevation of Moab Utah 4000'. Losing 1800 feet doesn't sound like much but it really impacts average fuel economy to be averaging downhill. Do the MPG on the way home.
The reason for better MPG during summer vs winter is easy: Colder air = more dense than warm air. Therefore on average, more fuel is consumed with lower IAT's to maintain stoicheometry. The trade off is that warmer IAT's result in lower engine power output.
Hey TFL, love the show! I understand the bigger tires weigh more, in fact the whole truck weighs more after all the upgrades. But the taller tires will alter the final drive ratio of the truck which is why you probably got the better mileage. Not to mention it is breathing better and exhausting better :) Great episode, I am trying to find a Touareg like that one, they are sweet offload.
You may know this already, so I may just be stating the obvious. The first generation Touareg and Cayenne were built on the same platform. I would love to have a first gen Cayenne turbo or GTS V8 Manual.
Fun video TFL team!! Oh!! Hey, Roman! Those are Pronghorn Antelope, I didn’t see any Mule Deer????? Hahaha, I believe you, the antelope showed after your comment to Andre was perfectly times for my sense of humour! Couldn’t wait to harass ya a bit! Heh heh. You all sounded sooo tired at the end, Tommy was even slurring his speech at times. Thanks again TFL team! Stay safe out there still, Eh.
Love these cheap vs the world type videos you guys do. Really interested in a discussion on Touareg reliability. Also interested to see how the air suspension handles Moab.
Generally you will see an increase in freeway with larger tires when gearing is left stock, but too much tire the transmission starts hunting for gears. Also the first test with the Ram was during the winter, which with large trucks can lose mpg due to the lubricants being thicker in colder weather. I always lose about 1 mpg in my Power Wagon in the cold weather. I am sure fuel blends make a difference too.
Please uncork that 4.2L V8, guys. That engine sounds equally, if not even more, glorious than that RAM. Those VAG V8s kind of like Chewbacca’s father if he got his man-bits crunched on a bike seat.
I get the same on long road trips with mine as well. I got a 19 ram laramie, no etorque, no air suspension. It does have a tonneau cover and the side step bar, but no other modifications. It was during the summer, and it was also within a few hundred feet of sea level.
Ya know, I have been tempted to run the gas tank down to empty and fill it with the 91 octane that the manual asks for, just to see if it makes a noteworthy difference....
I would like to point out that while bigger tires really hurt city mileage ( I.e. when you’re starting and stopping a heavier rolling mass) , they don’t necessarily always negatively impact highway mileage. With larger tires you’re gearing is essentially higher and could potentially lower your rpm at highway speed in top gear. I know it did on my old truck. I’d be curious to know if y’all see any difference in your highway rpms
Dam 19mpg on 2inch lift, 35in tires, with light bar, I’m surprised, I was thinking like high 15s but 19.2 is big difference. 👍🏻 guess time to call Jim Morrison?
Dmitry B it’s all wasting money unless you buy a cheap beater Hell, I don’t technically even need my Rebel and can get to work on my electric skateboard and save money but I love the thing. Having the large tank cut about 2 or 3 fuel stops round trip from my Dallas to central Colorado trip and made a Louisiana a round trip without a fuel stop
For those interested my 2009 v6tdi, 24.3MPG in freedom units, for the rest of the world 9.7 L/100km. The new ones are even more economical. the large tank is nice to have as that means you have about 1000km range useful in Africa especially Namibia. FYI our V6 petrol Toyota Prado does about 14MPG and has to have a 180 litre tank to have the same range. Between the 2 cars, I can say that VW is the bester for the long road. much more stable and much better on gravel at speed, The Prado though is better on trails as that wallowing soft suspension just absorbs the bumps. A bit off topic here but my favourite vehicles by rank which I drive regularly are 1)Touareg 2) Cayenne 3) Forester diesel 3)Qashqai 4)Prado 5)Sante Fe (recently sold). I amfortunate enough to drive many differnet cars but for now these are our top 5 SUVs

m 88 I couldn’t agree more!!! I hate that they changed the headlights the way they did!!! Loveeee my 04 if I could find another with low miles I would probably buy it 😅 especially if it had a Cummins (no offense to my hemi)!
With larger tires, you would expect better highway milage. But they kill city milage. So on long trips, you'll get good milage. But, in real world, combined, you're milage will go down. Since this trip was all highway, the city part didn't adversely effect the milage.
Big thing that really helps the RAM is that 8 speed transmission vs. the old Aisin 6 speed the Touareg has. In general, the 8 speed autos out there these days have done wonders for efficiency over anything with 6 or less gears. Those early Touaregs are surprisingly heavy for their weight, too, so I'm actually pleasantly surprised that it was as close as it is. I though the Touareg might actually get worse fuel economy due to the older tech. I'm pretty sure that Ram Hemi V8 has cylinder deactivation too, which helps tremendously on the highway. The VW is firing all 8 all the time, no tricks there. Despite the V10 also being old tech compared to what's out there now, I've recorded upto 22 MPG with mine on long highway trips. Average is closer to 20. Not bad for being the same basic vehicle (though also heavier, the V10 Touareg curb weight is somewhere around 5850 lbs) with about the same horsepower rating and 150 ft-lbs more torque than the V8. And in general, I set cruise at 80+ for long stretches of highway outside of urban areas and it still returns low 20s consistently.
The Rebel did great. Better than I would have predicted. The T did better than the factory listing says it should. Which is great. But I was hoping for even larger #'s from it.
2006 Toureg. Fuel grade question. Same options and maintenance as theirs except stock tire size. Previous owner ran 87. Literature says I can use 87. Manual says refer to tank lid sticker which says min 91. What to do. Can't afford premium here. Used 87 and avg 14.1mpg. Switched to mid and avg 14.5 to 14.7. Comment away
its not just the fuel. its mainly the computer detecting low temperature in the winter which dumps in more fuel...the heavier tires are not what decrease fuel mileage but "ROLLING RESISTANCE" are two factors greater than wind resistance
I'm not sure if the VW requires premium or not. I would think it would for maximum HP and TQ. On some cars the fuel makes a big difference more so on European vehicles than domestic ones.
With VCDS you should be able to adjust the fuel mileage to at least get closer to what it is with those tires. For whatever reason though, normally not the speed - which will also be off quite a bit.
I must have missed Roman's personal apology 🤣🤣🤣. Would be interesting to see what the truck would get now in stock form/summer temps and blends etc. in terms of mpg. Maybe not 22 but 20 seems within reach. Great vid. guys, thanks
I think there is an error factor with the mpg since the odometers on both vehicles are running slow due to the tall size off-road tires fitted on both...
They're all over the place, especially the V8. Nobody wants to deal with the repairs. Just be aware that you'll have a few repairs to do, as I just had to replace my AC compressor and transfer case motor. You can save so much money doing everything yourself. If you plan to do repairs on your own, make sure to get the V8. Much easier to get to than the V6. I hope you're able to find one! I love mine so much and couldn't imagine parting with it. Happy travels!
@James Kim true, it is tough to find one without damage. I got lucky and found one with 105k for $3k whose biggest issues were a neglected interior and curbed/cupped wheels
Tires make a big difference and those Duratracs that come on the new rebels and power wagons are terrible for fuel economy. I got the same mileage going from 33" Duratracs to 37" KO2s, but lost about 20% going to 37" Kanati Trail.Hogs (same tread pattern as Duratracs)
Seeing how I drive a t reg just like the 1 you guys have, I can tell you even before watching the video that it will get worse fuel mileage than the ram.
I've got an 06 same options as theirs. I've heard better mileage from premium. Running mid now. Any info would help. Tank lid says min 91. Forums say 87...
I doubt the tonneau cover is helping that truck. All the air is coming up over the cab and slamming down on it. It probably would've helped not having it on, the air circulates around the bed and creates a slipstream where the air flows right over the back of the truck.
Doesn’t using a lower octane than recommended impact the power and fuel consumption, because the ECU adjusts everything? Or were they not so sophisticated in 2004? The MCM and Co. Australians, using their after-market ECUs say this is an impact when using E85 for power and drag races. Hence the question.
Like I said before when you guys ran the test before and got such bad MPG the truck was to new and the winter mix would make a huge difference and as we all can see it did
My truck is a real project lol, a 1999 Chevy Silverado with 229k miles, I’ve replaced the front shocks need to replace The rear need to replace the rear leaf springs fix the tailgate that wouldn’t latch, 1 of the third door handles is broken, going to replace that, plate lights were burnt out put leds in there, put leds in the brake lights and daytime running lamps, put hids in the headlights high and low, plan to replace the rest of the lights on the truck with leds, plan on replacing the rear bumper, need brakes, ac still blows cold and trans was replaced 50k ago
And if you guys knew some science, you'd remember that hotter air (in summer) is less dense than cooler air, so your ram rebelbag had fewer air molecules to push our of the way on this mpg trek,
sceptyczny well you’re wrong but hey tell us all about your Ram with the etorque. Oh wait, you’ve never seen one let alone driven one let alone owned one? Ya thought so.
you will get better fuel economy in the touareg with premium gas. these engines are designed to run with better gas. here in germany, the worst you can get (and only on very few gas stations) is 95 octane, standart is 98 ocatane and premium is 102 octane.
VW Touareg would've ripped the RAM in half in pull by rope game. That is a German heavy panzer tank 😁 19.5 mpg is very nice for V8 and such heavy SUV on mountain roads. My 2005 Touareg with VR6 3.2 gets 21 mpg or so, it has check engine light on because of some vacuum leaks and catalytic converter is probably clogged too, too cheap and lazy to fix and its been like that for past 5 years 😁, nearly 200k miles on odometer.
The Ram isn't a lot heavier than the Treg. The V10 TDI weighs almost 6000 lbs. The Treg needs higher octane fuel and would probably get better mileage with it. You should try this with a much more recent Treg.
Doesn't drafting provide fuel economy benefits to both parties? The lead vehicle receives reduced drag, while the tail vehicle doesn't have to cut through the wind.
The overall tire size diffrence will throw the speedo off.. Which mean that's not a a curse number to text.. Idk what the diffrence in size is.. I'm busy and watching this lol so if I missed it I'm sorry.. But I hope they took that into account

I'd bet that exhaust system helped the Ram's mileage more than anything.

Nah they didn’t. But larger tires will show less miles anyway. They calculated it from GPS.

Andrew, don't you know the tonneal cover reduces the gas mileage compared to the open bed? Those light probably really screw with the airflow.
Did you guys do MPG test on the new 4 cylinder Rubicon?
And if you guys knew some science, you'd remember that hotter air (in summer) is less dense than cooler air, so your ram rebelbag had fewer air molecules to push our of the way on this mpg trek,
Now it would be interesting what the RAm would have got stock maybe 21-22 as rated?
So the rams e torque didn't really help on the highway
Raptor867 nor would it
@@Welcometofacsistube Seems like it only helps in a city or stop and go traffic
Raptor867 that’s exactly what it was intended to do
Rams e torque is a gimmick, that doesnt do crap
sceptyczny well you’re wrong but hey tell us all about your Ram with the etorque.
That is a German heavy panzer tank 😁
19.5 mpg is very nice for V8 and such heavy SUV on mountain roads.
You guys still have the Land Cruiser??
How are the BFGs on the highway?
420!
That's a party Touareg!
Futurama Spice Weasel reference? Roman knows what's up
The Ram isn't a lot heavier than the Treg. The V10 TDI weighs almost 6000 lbs. The Treg needs higher octane fuel and would probably get better mileage with it. You should try this with a much more recent Treg.
Newer Treg is less capable offroad
Doesn't drafting provide fuel economy benefits to both parties? The lead vehicle receives reduced drag, while the tail vehicle doesn't have to cut through the wind.
The best engine we got in europe, in my opinion, was a 2.5 i5 diesel
maybe in T4 Transporter, but not in T5
Low performence
The overall tire size diffrence will throw the speedo off.. Which mean that's not a a curse number to text.. Idk what the diffrence in size is.. I'm busy and watching this lol so if I missed it I'm sorry.. But I hope they took that into account
