I love Paul and I appreciated and enjoyed every minute and second of screen time he got in the anime. He's probably the main reason for why I love the seasons of DP. His personality and views are extremely interesting and his character developement is really well made. I watched the anime the first time when I was about ten years old and even though my older cousin didn't like him at all for how he treated his Pokemon I never disliked him. He seemed so amazingly smart to me and I loved him as a character a lot, you can argue a lot about him and the views he represents. Still you can't deny how far he bought Ash and how much he has grown by himself. This theme tho, the pressure and the pure badass and epicness is making me adore Paul even more. This douchebag (not even denying that he is indeed an advanced douchebag) deserves an award. I want to hear this theme in some game and I really really want him to come back, he's the best rival Ash ever got and I really like Gary okay.
+CrimsonMeme You could also point out that his views are actually partially beneficial to the pokemon - If he releases pokemon he thinks are too weak, he is doing them a favour by letting them free and back into the wild, instead of rotting in a PC.
+Fickledmycelium yeah I didn't mention that but it's a fair point. I guess that would only be beneficial to himself and he specifically didn't really think of the problem of the Pokemon rotting away, it's probably a useful side effect for him. Especially since I don't see any sad Pokemon ((except for Chimchar but as I said he's a big exception)) and they all seem to enjoy his and Reggie's company, even being sad that Paul lost in the League against Ash. That shows that Paul can bond perfectly well with his Pokemon, even though he has hard times with it and can't express it or accept it.
He is the best rival the anime has ever introduced. He pushed Ash to limits he had never even explored before. With Paul's views and beliefs being opposite to Ash's, it displayed so much contrast and depth to his character. Ruthless, demanding, merciless, and tactful.
If mega evolution existed he would not stand a chance as for mega you need to bond with your Pokemon. Paul clearly doesn't do it. Till gen 5 he would have been an awesome rival but if there were meagas he would be in the average category.
@@varunkaushik2732 so you mean to tell me he wouldn't be capable of mega evolving his Torterra,Electivire or Aggron? His starter was Turtwig which fully evolved into Torterra,it traveled with Paul in the Kanto,Johto,Hoenn and Sinnoh regions. Electivire shares the same characteristics as Paul,in just 1 region it went from an Elekid to an Electivire,at the Sinnoh League it proved that it was one of arguably Paul's strongest pokemon he's ever owned. Neither one of these pokemon have a problem with how Paul trains,Electivire embraced it on screen. After Paul lost to Ash at the league his brother Reggie told his pokemon the bad news but once he told them they could have a battle they had huge smiles on their faces.
Whenever this song plays in the anime you know shit is about to pop off. And go figure it's Paul making it happen..this guy was a straight Savage and that's what Ash needed. A straight up badass rival to tell him "either get stronger, or get out of the way" (Cept that whole battle frontier thing?..because I'll be honest paul got hosed really hard on that fight.)
@@wyvrix5421 i think ash could have definitely beaten the regis. paul lost to them cause he straight up gave up/got mentally broken. he tried fighting them head on. ash learned not to do that after his retries or at least when to go in lol.
Paul was definitely the best rival I mean he has everything you want in a rival he makes you hate him but love him at the same time because despite him being a jerk to Ash his training style is the training style of most pokemon trainers always looking for better pokemon and only bothering to pick up those who have combat potential and let's not forget the epic rivalry between his electivire and Ash's infernape
What a cool melody! I'm not very familiar with most of the anime's soundtracks, but I can tell you did an awesome job on this one even without knowing the source material. Great work, Eli! Can't wait to hear whatever else you have in store. :3
luis hernandez Yeah. I remember hearing it when Paul and Barry fought each other in the Sinnoh league. Don't correct me cuz I think I'm wrong. Also, I've heard it played for gym battles sometimes too. I think. I could be wrong like I said. I'm re-watching some of the DP episodes so I'll see if I'm right.
Tsundere Jesus There is something I've noticed about this theme. Whenever it is played, there is sometimes another theme that plays before it, and I feel like both themes are supposed to play one after another, with Paul's theme being the second one. Two episodes I can think of this happening would be Glory Blaze and I believe Team Shocker.
(in Pokémon Ultimate Journeys episode 114) Paul: I wouldn’t celebrating to win this battle if I we’re you… Get ready Ash, (Paul grabs his 2nd pokeball) my next Pokémon will be your second test for you to counter on! (Pokémon comes out Pokeball) Metagross: Meta! (Ash, Goh and Pikachu gasped) Ash: it’s Metagross.
Paul was an incredible rival. He was the total opposite of Ash which is pretty awesome. It makes 10000% sense they're rivals. His character is also just very cool.
Demonic Archangel not really. Without his mega charizard, he isn’t really anything special. Paul has many Pokémon from his teams across Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, and Sinnoh each carefully calculated for a specific purpose (you can see this across the many battles he has with ash)
S. Wu Number forth is buizel, wow your pathetic and predictable, so your using the Pokémon because their frustration when they lost to me the first time

Fasten your seatbelts to see the best rivalry ever again on Journeys! Let's see if it's a Hyper or Master class fight, but it will be so insane and epic. And be all ready, stand by for battle!
I like how you can almost hear shades of the original theme of the Pokémon games in there, but it sounds dark and intense. Fits Paul's distorted view of Pokémon training.
Fun Fact: Paul is based off the gen 2 (and 4 remakes HGSS) Rival, Silver. as both have long hair, a jacket, and use harsh training methods. Both characters also own a Weavile, Honchkrow, and Ursaring. (Silver does in the manga)
Whether you like this character of not, he was damn near perfect rival material for Ash. The spat with Gary was based solely on Ash's easily bruised ego, whereas this was actually about their Pokémon and each other's opposing training methods. Certainly not a likeable guy but I appreciated Paul's presence.
Paul was and still is Ash’s best rival. This guy pushed ash to the limit and made him even stronger. Was he a douchebag? Yes but the best rivals are douchebags because they push you. Paul definitely pushed ash. Ash grew so much and Paul had good development too. They both grew and benefited from the rivalry not just ash. Paul also benefited and grew as a character. I also loved the Pokémon Paul had on his team especially his Torterra because torterra was my starter for Pokémon Platinum. Yeah sure Gary was a good rival for the start of the series but for this point in ash’s journey Ash needed someone like Paul that clashed with his views of raising Pokémon and honestly ash’s other rivals haven’t been as good as Paul or as well developed as Paul. Paul is the best rival period.
Imagine if Paul was in the main series games. He would be more or less the same, but his pokemon would all have perfect Ivs, Evs and movesets, setting him apart from practically all other trainers aside from the elite four and champion. That would be a phenomenal challenge.
I've been re-watching the DP Anime and I can confirm that this theme was infact used (at least in the Japanese and English dub versions), and that Paul was by far Ash's best Rival. They were complete opposites, one had a heart and the other didn't but they both shared the same dream. But you want to know what the real crazy part is? It was that Paul was probably meant to reflect the competitive fanbase and Pokemon Trainers in general. I mean think about it. Ash is the casual player who just wants to have fun and make friends while growing stronger along the way. Paul sees Pokemon battles the way many of us do, as a competition. In the heat of battle, you can't afford to make any mistakes and you feel like the casual players are just holding you back from your true skill. Because in the end, Pokemon games are about battling and in many cases ((especially with all the hacking going on these days(looking at you Pimpnite), it's all about the competition. There aren't many friendly faces on the battle field. Admit that at one point in time that just like Paul, we have "released" a Pokemon that we caught because of EV's, IV's, Moves, etc that we just weren't satisfied with. But at the same time, we can't forget that Pokemon is a Game. And games are supposed to be fun. Which is why we are able to Battle, Trade, and Connect with people we choose who could become our friends because in Cynthia's words " the presence of Pokemon unites us".🤓
_Looks up from_ A Breeder's Guide to Better Pokémon... _Stares directly at Paul..._ "You know... I could beat you without even trying. In fact..." " *...Get ready for some next-level shenanigans!* "
@Costel Nfs I agree, but why are we comparing the two? If Trip is _that_ inferior, why is he the go-to for comparison? Trip's goals were beyond beating Ash - his beef was with Alder, so it's not really fair to compare the two.
Paul was and is the best rival because he was a straight up asshole. He challenged Ash and made everything just more dramatic. They were polar opposites but 2 sides of the same coin all the same. They both had the same dream but took 2 very different paths to accomplish it. Because he would challenge Ash's very core beliefs and always put him on edge. That's what makes him such a great rival. When you can make the main character question himself and truly make him ponder wether what he is doing is truly right, you know you have done something great as a rival. You really did grasp just how much their was to lose and how much was at stake( a clash of ideals) when they had their final battle. It was amazing build up and it has a satisfying climax. Overall, they had such a great push and pull dynamic and it really shows if you go back and rewatch it.👌

Imagine if Paul bumps into Ash in the current day and decide to have a battle with their best of the best. I'd think it go something like this: Paul: - Electivire(Obv) - Torterra(Obv) - Magmortar(Reliable backbone) - Honchkrow(Reliable backbone) - Ursaring(Powerful Guts ability, fairly competent) - Drapion(It took out half of Ash's team in the league and practically made Gliscor easy prey for Electivire) Ash: - Pikachu(Obv) - Charizard(His OG Powerhouse) - Sceptile(His Hoenn Powerhouse) - Infernape(His Sinnoh Powerhouse, also because Electivire) - Krookodile(His Unova backbone) - Greninja(Battle Bond)

This is really fitting, especially because he is not a official game character, also this just pumps up the nostalgia between ash and paul battles, since Paul literally is the new Silver from the Sinnoh region, thanks and nice job whit the re-make pokepeli :D
In my opinion before XY happened Ash’s Sinnoh team was probably the best out of all of his teams from Kanto to Hoenn Paul pushed him to go over the limits, to learn new strategies and tactics to win battles. From their first battle it was a tie, Second battle Paul won and made Ash spiral into a state of depression. Which made the Sinnoh League battle so satisfying. Infernape straight up went Super Saiyan and it was the best battle in my opinion.
His Sinnoh team is still the best, tied with his alolan. Kalos was just weak and overrated 2/3rd of his team was weak to fairy 1/2 of his team was weak to ice And only Talonflame and pikachu had steel type moves, but they don't even have a rivalry with fairies

*****
I can imagine an army with this music lmao
That shows that Paul can bond perfectly well with his Pokemon, even though he has hard times with it and can't express it or accept it.
meh. i dont like paul

He is the best rival the anime has ever introduced. He pushed Ash to limits he had never even explored before. With Paul's views and beliefs being opposite to Ash's, it displayed so much contrast and depth to his character. Ruthless, demanding, merciless, and tactful.
Sun and moon needs a rival like him. I bet ash would smarten up then.
If mega evolution existed he would not stand a chance as for mega you need to bond with your Pokemon. Paul clearly doesn't do it. Till gen 5 he would have been an awesome rival but if there were meagas he would be in the average category.
@@varunkaushik2732 Paul's bond with his pokemon is different. Even though hes a douche they respect him.

A straight up badass rival to tell him "either get stronger, or get out of the way"
(Cept that whole battle frontier thing?..because I'll be honest paul got hosed really hard on that fight.)
That's because he is the king. Also he used all three of his Regis. While ash only had to defeat one.
@@Silver-Synthesis I personally think Brandon's Dusclops is just as powerful as his Regis. The machine defeated Ash's Charizard, enough said.

Just saw the new intro for Pokemon journeys and my boi Paul is back!!!!!! Had to come back here to listen and hype myself up.

There is something I've noticed about this theme. Fun Fact: Paul is based off the gen 2 (and 4 remakes HGSS) Rival, Silver. as both have long hair, a jacket, and use harsh training methods. Both characters also own a Weavile, Honchkrow, and Ursaring. (Silver does in the manga)
Eh not really, Paul is actually a good character and rival lol. Plus I'm pretty sure Paul was just based off of the typical competitive player.
its been stated that Silver was his origin, this isn't my opinion, its a FACT.
There is an image with what appears to be Silver with a Nidoking, which Paul also uses too.

Greatest rival in the anime & my favorite rival in the series.
Whether you like this character of not, he was damn near perfect rival material for Ash.
Big facts Torterra is still my all time favorite
Imagine if Paul was in the main series games. He would be more or less the same, but his pokemon would all have perfect Ivs, Evs and movesets, setting him apart from practically all other trainers aside from the elite four and champion. That would be a phenomenal challenge.
I have literally been searching for this theme since it was played in the anime and yet I've never thought of it as Paul's theme. Thank You Pokeli

Uh no until Silver actually has a backstory and development, Paul is BY FAR superior to that terrible rival in every way, shape, and form...
now all we need is an extension of this. Personally the best battle theme in all pokemon
I've been looking for this for YEARS! I thank you for this.
Which is why we are able to Battle, Trade, and Connect with people we choose who could become our friends because in Cynthia's words " the presence of Pokemon unites us".🤓
You're actually a god for recreating this goodness. I honestly can't thank you enough.
Even now still the best

Pathetic....
_Looks up from_ A Breeder's Guide to Better Pokémon...
_Stares directly at Paul..._ "You know... I could beat you without even trying. In fact..."
" *...Get ready for some next-level shenanigans!* "
@Costel Nfs I agree, but why are we comparing the two? If Trip is _that_ inferior, why is he the go-to for comparison? Trip's goals were beyond beating Ash - his beef was with Alder, so it's not really fair to compare the two.
It’s not a matter of if Paul and Ash will battle again in journeys. It’s when.
I think they will now
Indeed
Now, more than never!
Not indeed.

Yep. You know why I’m here
In my opinion before XY happened Ash’s Sinnoh team was probably the best out of all of his teams from Kanto to Hoenn
Paul pushed him to go over the limits, to learn new strategies and tactics to win battles.
From their first battle it was a tie,
Second battle Paul won and made Ash spiral into a state of depression.
Which made the Sinnoh League battle so satisfying. Infernape straight up went Super Saiyan and it was the best battle in my opinion.
His team here is better than the kalos one in my opinion.
His Sinnoh team is still the best, tied with his alolan. Kalos was just weak and overrated
2/3rd of his team was weak to fairy
1/2 of his team was weak to ice
And only Talonflame and pikachu had steel type moves, but they don't even have a rivalry with fairies
