I posted this as a reply to someone confused at the story, but I feel as if more people would see this if I posted this as it's own comment. So here's what I think of this game's story: You notice how the intro and epilogue cutscenes are literally written on paper Isaac pins to his wall? This is all in Isaac's head; his mom isn't trying to kill him, but Isaac blames god for making his mom all abusive. For starters, Isaac has multiple personality disorder, all the playable characters are Isaac. Secondly, Edmund McMillen, the creator of the game, has stated multiple times that parents shaving their kid's head and dressing them as a girl in public as a punishment are signs of religious abuse. When Isaac draws out the Bible/God killing mom, that what he wishes would happen, but he feels that both his mom and God are against him. Isaac also views himself as corrupt and impure, as shown by a few endings when he appears demonic. Lastly, the Chest. Not only is "The Chest" the final area in the original game, but it serves as Isaac's getaway from the harsh and abusive reality to a place of imagination and pretend. I assume Isaac used to keep his toys in there until his mom took them away, so now he uses the chest to hide in and escape to a world of pretend where he overcomes great fears and monsters such as Satan and his own mother... but then it eventually kills him. Yeah, this "???/Blue Baby" character is Isaac when he dies of suffocation. Ending 11 suggests that this was an act of suicide because he sees himself as corrupt and to end all the suffering and abuse, but who knows, it could have been by accident. There's also Isaac's father who, in all honestly, isn't all that important to the story. The Polaroids suggest that there was a time where Isaac and his family was happy, but the father left for unknown reasons. This is when Isaac's mom most likely turned to religion for guidance and... things went downhill from there. In a nutshell, the story's about some messed up kid who has multiple personality disorder and loves to pretend, but has a religiously abusive mother and sees himself as impure. In the end, he kills himself because he can't take it anymore. No happy story here folks, just suffering and death.

Here's my theory: There is a family. In this family, there is a mother, a father, and a young boy. Now, this young boy is rather strange. He is very socially awkward, he likes to cross dress, and sometimes there's a dark shadow that follows him around. Despite how strange this young boy is, the family is still very happy. The boy never caused anybody harm and actually seems to be very decent. Both parents love each other, and both parents love him as a son, perhaps especially his mother. Unfortunately, something strange happened to this boy. One day, this "shadow" affected the boy, and the boy killed his father. The mother realized that the boy killed his father, but she doubted that it was truly out of his own will. So, she buries the father on top of the hill and keeps the boy near home so she could watch over him closely. Of course, she doesn't love her boy as much as she used to. Even though she desperately wants to love him, sometimes she gets so angry that her boy caused the death of her husband that she does mean things to him like giving him presents full of poop. The boy, of course, gets very sad by his mother's treatment of him at times, and he also gets sad that he realizes that his father's death was, at least in some way, his fault. Some time passes. The boy starts to feel a little better. The mother, however, starts seeing that the shadow that was sometimes seen surrounding her son return with greater frequency. She turns to christian television to find answers to her son's strangeness. Her son is oblivious to the reason why she watches television with such attention. She really does start hearing voices from god, since god is trying to keep the "shadow" from infected the boy. However, she doesn't understand how to keep the "shadow" away, so she takes his toys and his clothes away from him, and then forces him into his room. Finally, god, knowing that the boy cannot be saved from the "shadow" tells the mother to kill her boy. She agrees. The boy, meanwhile in his room, hears this commotion. He knows that his mother will try to kill him. So, in a second, he imagines a god intervening on his behalf to save him. This doesn't happen. No, instead he takes out the Bible and starts reading it in the hopes to save his soul. Unfortunately, he sees himself turning into different evil people and finally the devil. He gets sad and starts to realize that something really is wrong with him. So, he locks himself in the treasure chest and finally becomes the "shadow". Once this happens, the mother comes in to his room, knife in hand, and sees that her son isn't there. So, she goes outside and starts looking for him. Of course, she never finds him. A year later, she opens up the chest in her son's room and finds his dead corpse. Startled by her son's corpse and by her fear that the "shadow" is still there and not wanting to call the police, she digs a huge cave underneath his bedroom and puts the chest in there.
I actually like this theory of the story by ffdaz I think its called back story to the binding of Issac I suggest u go watch it its a pretty good theory and video
Am i the only one who thought maybe Issac's Mom has Schizophrenia? EDIT- I do understand the concept is based on the Bibles story of Abraham, specifically the line of "God said to Abraham, you shall kill your son Issac".
TheTrueRman We don't know that yet. God may have talked to her. Or maybe it was something else. Who knows. But I do agree that she may have Schizophrenia.
Ending 11 is basically a sadder version of ending 2. He reads the Bible, and it says being human is Sin, so he looks in the mirror and sees hes a demon, so he goes into the chest and suffocates himself.
So then Isaac gets in the chest to escape reality/ his mom, and dies suffocated? Because sometimes in those memories he gets when changing floors you can see him trapped in a chest breathing very heavily. Also, I don't think he has a sister, because in other of this memories you can see him receiving a gift, probably from her mother (who wanted a girl maybe?). And in fact, if I'm not mistaken, every character is Isaac, and "???" Would be him dead? I mean, he's coming out of the chest in the 10th ending, it kinda makes sense to me idk
mom and dad had isaac, then, maggie, and mom loved maggie more than isaac, so isaac feels envy; maggie dies; dad disappear, isaac feels guilty, and then in the "polaroid" end, he decides to live his life, crying, in another version, he dies suffocate. the gifts where from his mother making him appear to maggie and making him feel like a "shit" Isaac, Maggie, Judas, Cain, Eve, Samson and ??? are Isaac, using common toys Isaac is isaac, we love isaac Maggie has 4 hearts, because mom loves her Judas is hated Cain killed his brother Eve has a curse (envy, for isaac) Samson ... XD ??? is the desire of isaac to be dead
blue baby is a dead version of Isaac he locks himself in the chest because he can't live with him self some how he meats him self again #paradox also sister maggy and brother bobby are moms aborted children
nop, is Isaac's wish to be dead; sometimes it seems to have a scar in the belly, and is blue because (someone is called blue baby in playgr.) he cant breathe
zeenine the cactus Ending 7? That isn't a button that is a Eucharist. Also the gameplay that gets it is by beating the game up to that point 7 times. Each time you beat it you unlock a new ending/new item.
As for Isaac swapping to everyone before he jumps in the chest and closes it in on himself, may be a reference to past lives that he has had, overwhelmed with the past memories or such, or could have been people that he might have been, depending on circumstances in the womb. As for the demon in Isaac's room, I'm not exactly sure how to debunk that one. Perhaps a realization of early sadistic and evil intentions based on aggressive playouts to win, determine he's something evil to survive?
I remember reading an interview with the creator saying that the game was all just Isaac attempting to cope with what's happening by making the choice to get in the chest. It's sad but even through all the stuff he goes through, he eventually realizes that there's no way out of this.
First time i got an item unlock "mutant spider has appeared somewhere in the basemenr" i spent like 10 minutes looking through the floor to find a green spider

Psycho im christian but this is only a game do you know that in the bible in Genesis God told abraham to sacrifice his son Issac so the game have references from the bible
Ending 12.... made me cry.... then rethink my play-through of the game..... cry.. again..... then rethink my entire life....... Takin' this game's experience(s) to the grave......
I dont know exactly how the story goes. But if im right its about The binding of isaac a part of the Hebrew bible. Abraham hears gods voice and has to kill his own son. Right when he was about to slay his own son an angle stopped and told him he feared god. Then a ram appeared infront of him and he sacrificed the ram instead of his own son.
Isaac is a little boy who loved drawing and playing video games. One day, his (abusive) mother heard god asking her to kill Isaac, and so she grabbed a butchers knife and chased after him. Isaac gets trapped in a corner, with his mom bearing down on him, ready to kill him, when god intervened, knocking a bible off of the shelf, hitting his mom in the head. Isaac then celebrates, but his mom wakes up, and doesnt realize that god was telling her to let her son live, and tries to kill Isaac again. Although this time, Isaac has the upper hand, and manages to kill his mom, but now, he has sinned greatly, and has to face judgement, either by killing himself, or fighting the demons inside of his mind, and then ridding his mind of satan.
In ending 13, has anyone noticed what sounds like a knock like, or thud like noise in the audio at 6:24 to 6:26? I just noticed that just now. Is it just me; then? Hmmm...Must be...
Such a very interesting story. This is not the kind of game you can just take one look and understand it. You have to really look at it on all sides and keep an open mind. Its not just one thing or the other, the story says a bunch of things. It tackles things that we don't like to talk or think about. Kudos to this guy for creating a game that makes you think. I haven't had the chance to play a game like that since Silent Hill.
Mihai-Cristian Popa But DaS1's story was more "fixed yet still deep lore hidden under wraps". BoI has some kind of required amount of imagination and personal interpretation
It was isaac. He was so scared that his mom was going to kill him he hid in the chest. Then he gets locked in the chest and suffocates because lack of oxygen then when he opens the chest he sees his dead corpse
In repentance, we see his dad telling him a story at the end. I'm guessing that his father took him back and Isaac wasn't very good at the time, so he offered to tell a story. He ready Isaac's drawings and sees how messed up he is. There's also the possibility he just imagined it and starved to death
interesting to see that these endings were actually different in vanilla isaac, like unlocking judas instead of eden, or getting the nail, or wafer, or money=power
Here's how I see it. The narrator is adult male. Might suggest retrospect or external observation. Isaac is drawing at the time the narration starts, so, the narration begins AFTER dad exits the family. Dad and Mom hold hands. They create Isaac. Then mom dresses Isaac as a girl. Dad leaves. Mom tries to dress him as a boy again but it's too late. The boy clothes are evil because she sees Isaac as a girl. Isaac probably identifies as a girl. The penis though reveals Isaac's greatest shame. Whenever it is revealed he weeps. He hates it. Isaac wants to be a girl. Mom flips out because Isaac's gender dysphoria drove her husband away. Destroy the freak! Isaac in his self-view has no penis. Only the nightmares show him with a penis. The imaginary world beneath the chest in the imaginary basement under his room allows him to explore himself. But no matter what, he suffers guilt and sorrow. His drawings represent his sins. His life force, hearts, represent how close to death each persona brings him in his attempt to kill himself. He sees the Bible as a measure he cannot live up to. In the mirror he is still dark and wicked compared to the Bible's representation of Jesus. Mom isn't going to sacrifice Isaac. Isaac is going to kill himself so mom can win dad back...sacrifice himself. But as he struggles to choose life and to be himself, he feels more and more evil for being selfish, considering his own needs above his mother's happiness. He blames God for creating him to be an anomaly that drove away love. The absence of the dad in the photo with the blonde girl shows that it was mom that created the girl, mom and dad were together to create the boy. The game endings reveal whether or not Isaac decides to kill himself. In the original story, Abraham wasn't allowed to sacrifice Isaac. It was a theophany of God's sacrifice of Jesus far into the future. God had prepared a ram for the sacrifice, and Isaac was spared; though Jesus would not be spared. This Isaac would also be spared. It was the Lord of Flies commanding mom...not God. God intervenes to save Isaac. Aside from Mom and Isaac, there's nothing else in the house except for her increasing madness from losing her husband over her misbegotten daughter-son, and Isaac's personal hell, being blamed by mom for it. Isaac perceives that all is well and happy, even though it isn't. Mom and Isaac in a house on a hill all alone and happy, drawing and writing stories, living in an imaginary world that becomes quickly tainted by religious extremism and demonic persuasion. Glad to see God in the end prevents a horrible mistake. The victorious Isaac rises above the BLAME of his mother and chooses his own life is worth living, and mom can find her own way. The story written out is not about murder of mom, but of how Isaac reconciles his inner struggles of guilt, blame, self-hate and identity and gender crises.
The reason there's a "second" Isaac looking character, but with a wig, is because it is his sister, Magdelene. I think that when Isaac's Mom and Dad divorced, the Dad took Maggy with him, and Isaac's Mom made him dress like Maggy. (there's a theory that Maggy died of unknown reasons.) There's an in-game cutscene depicting Mom giving Isaac a present which holds a wig like Maggy's, but he's made fun of for wearing it.
Or Maggie is another persona created by gender dysphoria and the abusive laughter of other parents having disapproved of the child's self expression. The gift I believe preceded the photo of the child wearing the wig.
Well, the story is pretty dark and depressing anyway.... I mean, it's about a boy who used to have a family of four until his sister died. His mother was traumatized because of it and became overzealous and fanatical towards Christianity. Isaac's father couldn't handle it anymore and decided to leave. Isaac's mother began to grow abusive and eventually almost killed Isaac (until an angel intervened and knocked her out with a bible). Isaac read the bible and felt demonized because the old testament almost states that being human is a sin. Feeling ashamed, he locked himself inside the physical chest as well as a mental "chest" where the game takes place. Every time you die, Isaac is brought back to reality. Every victory you have, he slips further away from reality. When you fight Isaac in the Cathedral, it is his last chance to accept his reality and get out of both the physical and mental chest alive. When you fight blue baby, it is too late for Isaac. Blue baby is his new reality because he is dead. If you kill blue baby, he is victorious in escaping reality altogether and will still die, but thinking he is a hero of sorts.
TL;DR Isaac is dying inside of a chest, the game is about him choosing illusion over reality. More victories = deeper into illusion (and eventual death in reality). More defeats = realization and acceptance of reality (and living that reality). Keep in mind: ending 12 was confirmed to actually happen before ending 11
ok so at 4:30 thats actually an easter egg:) the easter egg is dr. fetus from super meat boy. since the same people that made binding of isaac made super meat boy now you know
I watched this because I didn't get Ending 1. I; killed Mom's Heart, got the achievement for beating the game, then a projectile left over from defeating Mom's Heart hit and killed me before I could open the chest.
This game is about a biblical story that goes: God tells Abraham to kill his son on a mountain, Abraham is about to do the deed when an angel shows up stops him and makes him kill a ramb instead. God was testing Abraham. Now this is how the game transfers it. Abraham = Isaacs mom Abrahams son = Isaac God = Creepy man in the attic who hates Isaac
The Troll Spy At least this game is good and the lore it kinda needed cause there are so many endings and stuff and some of the lore is good but fnaf is all shit made by 3 year old kids
Well, the story itself is based on the Biblical story about Abraham and his attempt to sacrifice his son Isaac in order to prove his devotion to God, but like in the game, an angel intervenes
Yes, I know. And as we all know, The Old Testament is the Christian term for The Tanakh, the Hebrew Bible, as Jesus himself was a Jew. I study Religious Studies at The University of Copenhagen and have been covering the history of the Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Christianity and Islam), their sources and connections.
the original credits song aren't that creepy, yep, the credits you heard were bonus, the original credits were catchy, but the song changes after you unlock the blue baby character. what's blue baby? that dead blue baby in the chest with the X_X face, after that ending the credits song change. there u go, if you wanna search the original credits, its called "end times" and is in the vanilla Ost. there are several kinds of binding of Isaac remakes, they just get more depressing. and this is the vanilla version. the oldest one.
I understand what he is portraying. Either his parents were very strict or very abusive Christians, more than likely saying that it was "Gods plan" which is bullshit. I'm sad that these kind of people exist and make Christians like me look bad
I remember watching an interview with him, and he said his entire family was really religious. He couldn't have a fun childhood, being forced to go to church twice a week and especially them disallowing him from all the average "growing up in the 90s stuff", Magic the Gathering cards, DnD, comics, and a lot of other things were viewed as satanic and he was barred from having them.
In popular culture conquest is left out. The bosses were created in that way because edmund (creator) did it deliberately as a reference to this replacement of conquest with pestilence.
Am I the only one who feels so fucking bad for Isaac? Like, c'mon: you live a happy life with your caring mother, and someday she tries to kill you, because something happened to her. You try to escape her, so you jump in the basement. What are you doing there? You cry, you are just like 8 year old kid! The fear, the darkness. But that's not all! You need to face monsters that looks horrific (some of them have no eyes), and they look like a crazy scientist's experiment! Really, I feel so bad for him.
Can I just point out she took away his clothes because they are supposed to be "sinful" but didn't bother to rid herself of her own. What sense does that make? I know it's a game and that's all it is, but that just bothers me.
Her logic: her son's soul is tainted, so nothing can have any grasp Yes she wears clothes too, but (to her at least) she is literally /speaking/ to /god/- obviously she's just more immune to their 'evil influences' Basically she doesn't see any of this harming /her/ because she's "so pure she can communicate with God himself" so obviously nothing needs to change for /her/, but her son is young and impressionable and should not be given any further opportunity to stray
Even if someone might consider these "low quality" because of Rebirth and everything that came after, I still hold alot of love for the original drawings. The Rebirth game is way more polished, but lacks due to the missing hand of Edmund McMillen in the drawings. It was special and iconic on it's own way.

"FUCK YEAH, A QUARTER!"
@Philip Tsurkan um, yea
well, that was kinda right.. execpt for most of it
Am i the only one who thought maybe Issac's Mom has Schizophrenia?
EDIT- I do understand the concept is based on the Bibles story of Abraham, specifically the line of "God said to Abraham, you shall kill your son Issac".
Really? You don't FUCKING SAY!!

As a person who believes in God, she might have schizophrenia.

the ending where isaac gets dr fetus is my favourite
05:17 That Swag
Aww, poor Isaac on ending 11.
umm...ending 2...
Ending 11 is basically a sadder version of ending 2. He reads the Bible, and it says being human is Sin, so he looks in the mirror and sees hes a demon, so he goes into the chest and suffocates himself.
Linkachu oh wow that's why he went in the chest.
well thats horafing
Tdog redman It also might explain ending 10, the ded body in the chest.
It’s amazing to compare the endings for the original and for repentance back to back, and see just how much the game has grown over the years
This is Doctor Fetus :D Super Meat boy yeah
Pontifex Tigris Maximus doctor fetus :OO
The creator of the binding of isaac is the same who created super meat boy,so yeah
I mean, he's coming out of the chest in the 10th ending, it kinda makes sense to me idk
mom and dad had isaac, then, maggie, and mom loved maggie more than isaac, so isaac feels envy; maggie dies; dad disappear, isaac feels guilty, and then in the "polaroid" end, he decides to live his life, crying, in another version, he dies suffocate.
the gifts where from his mother making him appear to maggie and making him feel like a "shit"
Isaac, Maggie, Judas, Cain, Eve, Samson and ??? are Isaac, using common toys
Isaac is isaac, we love isaac
Maggie has 4 hearts, because mom loves her
Judas is hated
Cain killed his brother
Eve has a curse (envy, for isaac)
Samson ... XD
??? is the desire of isaac to be dead
whoaaaa that was nice :o did you figure that out or did you read it somewhere? Or was it too ovbios and everyone except me got it? :p
i read and some logic i have used OWO
blue baby is a dead version of Isaac he locks himself in the chest because he can't live with him self some how he meats him self again #paradox also sister maggy and brother bobby are moms aborted children
nop, is Isaac's wish to be dead; sometimes it seems to have a scar in the belly, and is blue because (someone is called blue baby in playgr.) he cant breathe

2:23 ISAAC YOU JUST SPOILED THE WHOLE TBOI LORE
I don't understand this game's story. Can someone explain it to me?
It's very deep story actually. Just google it
I dont know exactly how the story goes.

Try the first Dark Souls.
Mihai-Cristian Popa But DaS1's story was more "fixed yet still deep lore hidden under wraps".

Issac.
It was isaac. He was so scared that his mom was going to kill him he hid in the chest. Then he gets locked in the chest and suffocates because lack of oxygen then when he opens the chest he sees his dead corpse
As weird as this game is, it is fun as heck and addicting.
In repentance, we see his dad telling him a story at the end.
I'm guessing that his father took him back and Isaac wasn't very good at the time, so he offered to tell a story. He ready Isaac's drawings and sees how messed up he is.
There's also the possibility he just imagined it and starved to death
Isaac is confirmed to have suffocated to death in the chest he hid from his mother in

interesting to see that these endings were actually different in vanilla isaac, like unlocking judas instead of eden, or getting the nail, or wafer, or money=power
Ugh, I'm not sure that this is actually what the creators intended it to be, but I like your theory. Really interesting! ^_^
bradley hawley 0/10 for being a fanboy.
0/10 for using a shitty emoticon.
Isaac: I’m sad :c
Me: YOU WONT BE ANYMORE, BECUASE YOU BEUTIFUL
Isaac's depression after being abused, bullied and almost murdered in cold blood by his own mother: ight imma head out
Issac is a cute little anime character to me makes me sad he doesn't really get a happy ending
Yes He Does Ending 13 Shows His Mother That Culture Is Not Sin And I Guess
Every Was Happy After That.
I'm guessin you assume that because of the last picture they show
Well, the story is pretty dark and depressing anyway....
TL;DR
Isaac is dying inside of a chest, the game is about him choosing illusion over reality. More victories = deeper into illusion (and eventual death in reality). More defeats = realization and acceptance of reality (and living that reality).
Keep in mind: ending 12 was confirmed to actually happen before ending 11
sorox1234 0_o OMG!
So God wants Isaac's mother to kill Isaac, but just when Isaac was about to die, god stopped his mother. Wtf?
The game is based off the biblical story of Abraham and Isaac. Isaac's mom is Abraham who was told to sacrifice Isaac but God stopped him

This game is about a biblical story that goes:
God tells Abraham to kill his son on a mountain, Abraham is about to do the deed when an angel shows up stops him and makes him kill a ramb instead. God was testing Abraham. Now this is how the game transfers it.
Abraham = Isaacs mom
Abrahams son = Isaac

Yes, I know. And as we all know, The Old Testament is the Christian term for The Tanakh, the Hebrew Bible, as Jesus himself was a Jew. I understand what he is portraying. Either his parents were very strict or very abusive Christians, more than likely saying that it was "Gods plan" which is bullshit. I'm sad that these kind of people exist and make Christians like me look bad
And me
I remember watching an interview with him, and he said his entire family was really religious. He couldn't have a fun childhood, being forced to go to church twice a week and especially them disallowing him from all the average "growing up in the 90s stuff", Magic the Gathering cards, DnD, comics, and a lot of other things were viewed as satanic and he was barred from having them.

This game kind of failed because the 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse are Conquest, Famine, War, and Death. Famine and Pestilence are the same Horsemen.
In popular culture conquest is left out. The bosses were created in that way because edmund (creator) did it deliberately as a reference to this replacement of conquest with pestilence.
Still, having two of the same thing. This game now takes place in the future.
Isaac finally has a not horrible ending :)

Canonically all of the non-cutscene parts of the game play is Isaac's dying dream!
Yay?
Can I just point out she took away his clothes because they are supposed to be "sinful" but didn't bother to rid herself of her own. What sense does that make? I know it's a game and that's all it is, but that just bothers me.
Her logic: her son's soul is tainted, so nothing can have any grasp
Yes she wears clothes too, but (to her at least) she is literally /speaking/ to /god/- obviously she's just more immune to their 'evil influences'
Basically she doesn't see any of this harming /her/ because she's "so pure she can communicate with God himself" so obviously nothing needs to change for /her/, but her son is young and impressionable and should not be given any further opportunity to stray
Issac has very good imagination
when he wears that thing it's from super meatboy
Dr fetus!!!
Man the credits song go hard
Even if someone might consider these "low quality" because of Rebirth and everything that came after, I still hold alot of love for the original drawings.
The Rebirth game is way more polished, but lacks due to the missing hand of Edmund McMillen in the drawings.
It was special and iconic on it's own way.
Dr. Fetus?!?!?!?!?!
