    You should give Eon Blue Apocalypse/The Patient a try on your next Tool go round. Eon isn’t necessary but that’s the lead in on the album, kinda sets the tone. Or The Pot, or No Quarter Zepellin cover. Cheers!😁

    It's plausible that this song was written with L. Ron Hubbard in mind, but my personal interpretation of this song has always been that it is more of a generalized screed against excessive piety and self-righteousness-- essentially, false martyrdom. Basically, it could apply to anyone who latches on to a cause or a belief system, then makes false promises and tries to exploit it to elevate themselves without having any intention of making any actual personal sacrifice for what they claim to believe. The phrase 'holier than thou' comes to mind. But of course, actual martyrdom can only be achieved through death. The line "You've claimed all this time that you would die for me / Why then are you so surprised when you hear your own eulogy?" seems to indicate someone who believes his own hype and is perfectly content to bask in others' admiration, but is unwilling when his followers expect him to follow through with his promises. In my view, Maynard is saying, it's okay to have beliefs, but if you're going to talk the talk, you actually have to back it up by walking the walk.

    • @feintcircles
      @feintcircles 5 лет назад +1

      I can certainly appreciate your take on this song, it's always been one of my favorites that really got me into TOOL back in the day. Personally, I feel like this song is referring to Bill Hicks the comedian. Besides an image of Bill being featured in the album liner notes, and an excerpt of a Bill Hicks stand-up show being used at the beginning of 'Third Eye'; before this album came out Maynard and Bill were in talks of working on a project together. Unfortunately Bill Hicks passed away before this project could be realized, and as I understand it this album, Ænema, is dedicated to him.

    • @jdiggitty
      @jdiggitty 5 лет назад +1

      That's what's great with Tool. It doesn't even have to be a metaphor. What was the point of Christ dying for me 2000 years ago? It has no meaning, especially when the message has been so perverted and used to exploit people. He accomplished nothing in the end.

    • @feintcircles
      @feintcircles 5 лет назад +1

      @@ianscottt3642 Thanks for the feedback LOL . You can interpret this song how ever you'd like, that's why it's called ART. As far as I know nobody in the band has ever come out and said what the song is about. If that's the case, it's open for interpretation. I guess I'm sorry if that offends you somehow.
      Let me guess, you're the OGT fan, so anyone else's idea of what their art is about is 'retarded' because you know ALL about their material??

    • @chevand8
      @chevand8 5 лет назад +4

      I'm inclined to agree that it's most likely not about Bill Hicks, though certainly in a much less aggressive manner. Hicks was a friend of the band, while "Eulogy" is actually a rather sarcastic and vitriolic song. The whole tone of the song doesn't seem like it fits someone whom the band genuinely admired. Lines like "Come down, get off your fucking cross / We need the fucking space to nail the next fool martyr" would seem to indicate a person whom Maynard detests, at least for being a hypocrite.

    I had heard some Tool before. Stuff from Undertow but I remember it like yesterday. I moved to Nebraska from California with my parents when I was 13 was visiting my brother in Sacramento in 1999 when I was 16 and he got us tickets for Family Values tour 2 at Arco Arena. The radio station that was sponsoring the Sac show was I think 98 Rock played this song while we were driving to the concert and I asked my brother who the fuck? And what the fuck was that? He said you've never heard Tool? I went to a record store a block from his house called Dimple Records the next morning and bought everything they recorded from 91-99. I'm just fascinated by their constant evolution. They've created a sound melodically and atmospherically which can't be easy when the band and the singer don't seem to particularly like each other to the extent that unless they're touring they're never even in the same room despite both Maynard and Danny living in Arizona.

    I've always thought Tool separated themselves from the pack of other good bands is when they hit that riff or groove, a lot of bands would make a 4 or 5 minute song over something that wonderful. Tool plays it for maybe 20 seconds and moves on within the song and brings so much more within that same song, changing it up often. I've often thought Danny Carey could create some amazing hip hop or pop grooves, but I honestly think it would bore him playing the same beat for one song. They capture magic in a bottle in each song, but only give you a taste before switching it up. And it leaves me wanting more and more. That's why I can still play them so much and never get bored of their albums.

    I've compiled some interesting bands and songs for you to check out:
    Dir En Grey (Vinushka, Rinkaku, Zetsuentai)
    They're a Japanese (prog/alt) metal band that I've been listening to for more than a decade. Their sound overall is creepy (+ vocals clean,scream,squeal,plain gargoyle tbh) and their songs have amazing flow to them, please give them a go. Honestly there are so many more amazing songs from them, but there's a few to start from. Most of their songs have these 'off' parts I've learned to appreciate along the years.
    Soen (Slithering, Oscillation, Sectarian)
    I've found this Swedish band within a the year I've been here and I just fell for their first album Cognitive. I know you enjoy great build ups so start with Slithering. This band has some Toolish vibes to their songs.
    Wheel (Lacking, Vultures, Wheel, Where the Pieces Lie)
    Fresh Progmetal band from Finland (singer from UK). They've been booked to open for Soen on multiple events.
    Here are also some 1 songer bangers for ya:
    Death - Voice of the Soul
    Mr Bungle - Carousel
    Arcturus - The Arcturian Sign
    Evergrey - The Silent Arc
    Rishloo - Feathergun in the Garden of the Sun
    Jack The Joker - Bad Behaviour

    Interesting tidbit about this song for you Jim, the beginning where you hear the sound 'eh-eh eh-eh eh-eh, eh-eh' (or maybe, It sounds like a distorted duck quack lol).....That is actually Maynard, continuously singing into the mic (with distortion) while quickly turning it off and then back on again over and over.

      I got the exact same interpretation, especially when his name is actually said in Ænima. It makes me wonder if some of the members of Tool dabbled in Scientology at one time or were just critical about the people in LA who were into it.

      @@lottt86 Good point, but why would anyone write an "eulogy" to somewone they don't like? Mallard being Mallard, I would see him talking s*** about someone he likes, rather than dedicating a song to someone he doesn't. Also, the album is filled with references to BH. Would it make sense to write an "eulogy" about some other random person when Bill Hicks had just died recently? The pieces fit.

  • @dylansimanski5735

    The “martyr” that this song is based on is L Ron Hubbard, the founder of the Church of Scientology. In this album, Maynard delved deep into spiritualism, many religious books and the maverick views of Bill Hicks. The backstory is incredible to this album, since it’s the first with Justin Chancellor, and where they found-ate their identity as the best progressive/psychedelic metal in existence. And just wanna say that August 30th can’t come soon enough💪

    It's one of Tools less opaque songs. It's about demagoguery and the inevitable outcome when the masses aren't satisfied. It takes a kind view of neither the demagogue nor the masses that follow him/her.
