Ditto. I was looking for that moment where the announcer goes, "And HE KNOWs folks. HE knows!" he won the competition. Still looking for that ESPN video I taped myself!
I was there 30 years ago that labor day weekend! At that point I was 14 and I had never seen anyone skate vert without a helmet and christian was busting 540's and lean methods. "shadow air" It's borderline painful for me to watch this, because I want to return to 1986! Now, it's 2016, 30 years later and both myself and christian live in HB. Life was more simple and Better back then!
condor5150 I feel you ,on returning back to 1986 ( I was 15 at the time) . Those times were really cool back then. I miss them .. I guess ,I'm stuck in the 80's. Just got through listening to New order (Blue Monday)
Skaters can only wish they could skate like this... Just a deeper level of skating all around.. Today skating is like the Pogo stick or hula hoop.. It was a lifestyle back then in this awesome nearly perfect time called the 80's So proud of Christian! He is A REAL MAN!! RESPECT
Nah, today's skaters are still nar. You just have to watch for the good ones. Powell Paralta still knows what's what. But yeah, there will never be another( 80's,) Hosoi no way.
Watch Ben Raybourn, Pedro Barros, Cory Juneau, Shaun Ross or Greyson Fletcher and tell me if you still believe there's no rad modern pros tearing it up.
McTwist was still a new trick and as Hawk says, Hosoi did them the proper way. The skate crowds also love the Rocket Air. I remember seeing Hosoi in a street contest in San Francisco and everyone was yelling for the Rocket Air.
Remember it well. I was 15 and my friend picked me up and on the way to the beach we were sitting at a light and saw a huge plume of smoke and we agreed that something gnarly happened but we didn't care enough to go check it out. Screw that we're going surfing so we continued on to the beach. It was finals day and Mark "Occy" Occhilupo won the OP Pro and then a riot soon erupted. People lit up a couple atc's and flipped a cop car. I was out at Beach blvd when I saw the smoke and then not long after that H.B.P.D come out in full riot gear on the beach and swept it from south to north beating on people who were just laying out a quarter mile away from the pier. I followed about 50 yards behind the cops and grabbed a couple cool towels and a sweet beach chair that people left behind. Came home later that day and found out that plume of smoke was the Aeromexico plane crash over Cerritos. That was a bad day I will never forget it.
This is the best quality video from 1986 EVER..Im shocked. Christians a beast. Thumbs up if you know who Jesus is. I mean, thumbs up if Jesus knows YOU.
It was either 85 or 86 at an OP skate comp there in HB I got knocked in the head by someones board, the barricades were moved and I just cruised on up to the front of the vert ramp. I was only like 6 or 7 so I couldnt see shit but the crowd scattered I had no idea what was going on andBLAM I saw a flash and look up at this girl and she screaming and crying and i had no idea why. Come to find out Im covered in my own blood and have a grapefruit sized knot on my head. I think my mom sued won and blew it all on coke, THANKS MOM
I was at a contest back in 85 and I saw a board fly off the side of a ramp and straight into some kids mouth and take out his front teeth. Big mouth gash and Blood everywhere. When I saw it I turned away. Thank God there were people there next to him with stronger stomachs to help him.
Hosoi and Cab were literally all around skateboarders. They were street and vert, top skateboarders in both styles. Now is either street or vert, but not really both...of course some might do, but not top on either style. Hawk was great at vert, but not really street., He would do good in street competition, but when some vert elements were added to the skate park....
@rareskateboardvideos - check out the dvd - "rising son: christian hosoi". i'm not a skate fan but i'm always amazed at how high hosoi could go and enjoy watching his old skate footage.
Christian could get any girl he wanted at this time. I remember he came into town in around 86 and about 30 girl's from high school wanted to meet up with him. He was so beautiful
@@Slappi2 everything I said is literally what he did. Not just here but in every contest. Hosoi was always only good for 1 540 per run and the rest of his runs were always some variation of frontside/backside airs. And what's funny is Hosoi knows it. He wasn't a technical skater. He had a very limited bag of tricks. People (including myself) didn't/don't watch him skate because of his tricks. It was his style and power that people love. He's even said, "I knew I had to go higher because Tony would have 3 new tricks I couldn't do." And whether I'm a good skater or not has absolutely nothing to do with Christian Hosoi, but nice try anyway lol.
ohh fuck thats cool haha ;) i love venice beach man! ..wish i had the same appreciation for skateboarding when i was there :/ lol i didnt know what dogtown was then either :/ ohh well haha i love it that all those old school guys still go back to venice though.. allways keen for a trip home ;)
Hosoi was an absolute Rock Star.
He is beautiful. I like his haircut
Saw this on espn in the 80s and couldn’t believe it was on tv. Was like Christmas
Ditto. I was looking for that moment where the announcer goes, "And HE KNOWs folks. HE knows!" he won the competition. Still looking for that ESPN video I taped myself!
The 80s were the best for everything. Fun childhood/teen years for sure!

Yes
I was there as well and the riot year haha...might of been this year maybe the next it was crazy
This is true. He's clean and sober now and he's still taking 1st place at competitions with his team. What a legend.
wow, this looks like it was recorded yesterday.
Still looks like it was recorded yesterday! 10 years after your comment hahaha
1986???? Amazing!!!!
no more drugs now and he still is a legend! Saw him at venice beach the otherday

Yup. That's what I've been saying for years now. It's like circus 🎪 tricks now. It's just stupid. Like gymnastics at the Olympics.
@fernandomaron87 OOo yea Greyson was born too late. He's definitely a product of the Fletcher tribe.
@@fernandomaron87He might be talking about style. Barrows fletcher and those guys are amazing, but no one looks like christian on a skateboard
He's Soo Smooth. He Makes it Look So Easy.
Late 80's HB was an amazing place and time. OP Pro good shit man
Wow clear video even though it was from the 80s, this guy is smooth, he looks good and talented, what more can u ask for, awesome OP back then
McTwist was still a new trick and as Hawk says, Hosoi did them the proper way. The skate crowds also love the Rocket Air. I remember seeing Hosoi in a street contest in San Francisco and everyone was yelling for the Rocket Air.
Nobody's ever going to beat his records as he's the ROCKET MAN!!
yeah we would blast those off of launch ramps back then.
Dude prob slayed so much tang after that run
Dude....for real.
What a legend!

20 years later he still skating on HB beach.
30 years later he still skating on HB beach.
He doesn't skate like he used to, but he still tears it up!
Style master..
The kids cheering at the start looks like it could have been filmed at the Xgames last week
La bestia.. the one and only.... Master Jedi Hosoi
Awesome video saw him on main st in hb about 8 yrs ago
Style!
This is the best quality video from 1986 EVER..Im shocked. Christians a beast. Thumbs up if you know who Jesus is. I mean, thumbs up if Jesus knows YOU.
Yes, Jesus Montoya knows me
Would love to see the shots from the big camera up top the ramp.,Hosoi what a legend.
In 1986 I was impressed with myself doing tic tacs in the driveway
Almost 40 years ago & nobody could ever beat the ROCKET MAN Hosoi!!
Steve Steadham slapping five at the end.
Was that Steve Steadham on the ramp at the end?
It sure looked like him.
Slapping Steve Stedham five at the end was the best part.
Bones Brigade all the way, baby!
WHAT!!! I dident know Hosoi could do mctwists!!! HE IS AWESOME!!!!
shit he did them 6or7 foot high!!! INSANE!!
A lot of guys landed them but didnt always do them, i think its one of those tricks that you slam really hard on.
This dude is so cool
NOBODY could beat Hosoi's skating record!!
I met hosoi today in seattle :D
It was either 85 or 86 at an OP skate comp there in HB I got knocked in the head by someones board, the barricades were moved and I just cruised on up to the front of the vert ramp.
