JS Big Baron Tech Talk

  • An instant classic, the Big Baron is inspired by the mid lengths that generations
before us rode on the infamous Gold Coast points. This is paired with a more modern bottom contour and twin fin placement, then complemented by a neatly
pulled in round tail for extra hold. Because on this board, you’ll be burning speed
and burying rail. A lot of it.

What other fins in futures you recommend for this board?

This board is amazing as i just bought the 6'6 and it performs like my shortboard and likes to be surfed on rail. Do yourself a favor and go get one!

I was looking to order one of these but not sure what construction to go with PE OR PU. The js website is a bit confusing on how this board is constructed and pricing differences? Any information would be much appreciated

How's the critics, haha... Only heard good things about this board. Who cares about depressions anway , it's part of surfing. All good performance boards are glassed light. I'll take the depressions and performance over a heavy log any day. I'm in!! Yeewww.

Lots of reviews popping up about the glassing quality is super-concerning. Perfect example is the Skipper Surf Review guy (no offence but he surfs shitty, small waves and isn't exactly blowing up when he surfs) and even he shows after a hand full of surfs a large number of depressions in the deck. The performance of this board looks perfect for a large variety of surfers (and I'd love to pull the trigger on one), but I'm not purchasing a high-performance shortboard that should be prone to these kinds of things. Given the popularity of mid-lengths currently, this board should be at the top of the list BUT there are other options that are close in terms of performance but way more durable...

Can you please share what those other options are? I’m in the market for a good midlength and this big Baron looks like the perfect shape. Thanks.

Definitely Firewire's Seaside and Beyond and Sunday. I've got a S&B 7'0 and a 6'8 Sunday. Both are super durable, suit a wide range of surfers and surfing and just plain make surfing fun again for me. Changing fins in each really alters the responsiveness and type of surfing you can do too, but ultimately most people are looking at these types of boards for a different feel. I've surfed shortboards my whole life and absolutely love jumping on these things from 1ft to 15ft. The other board I really liked was the Hayden shapes Glider. That's my 2 cents worth. Hope it helps...

@Jeremy B. look at the Tolhurst/Ingleby mid 6. I got one a while back & this thing just detonates. Pretty exy at $1700 but I've abused this thing in a don't give a flyin fuck if I break it (I would really) but nah, all good.

Great board, but misleading b.s. that any ordered board, even in stock dimensions is glassed with PU resin. Yet, you pay for PE carbon construction. Only board available with PE is a 5’2” baron, all others are PU. JS talks this construction as next level but doesn’t put his money where his mouth is. Or integrity. If you charge for PE, then glass in PE! Or charge less. Very disappointing like a money grab

The problem with all these "mid length" videos is the waves are long and fast & ANY board will go good in them. They also allow easy good surfing. Plus, many so-called mid-lengths are now being shortened to fat-nose stubbies so yes, they go good in long point waves and soft beachies. The surfboard industry is a disgrace.
