    This is how teaching video should be done, with diagrams and to the point explanation. Most videos have some guy waffling on for ages with irrelevant shit and the camera is focuses on the person speaking. I don't need to see the person. I need to see the fret board. Well done mate for not needing to fill your ego by showing your Face

    Once I got the pentatonics down I transitioned to the c major scales and the different positions. This helps a lot, especially since music is calm too and the bass just rides along with the guitar.

    Pointing out those target notes made my soloing sound so good. I’m familiar with chord theory, but my playing sounds like arpeggios mostly. Sometimes i land on sour intervals. The ones you highlighted were really nice. It’s weird how the 6th on the C sound bad , but the 6th on the F sounds great. This was a big eye opener for me. Now I’m thinking that I can just make certain intervals my targets just to hear what they sound like when I land on them, and try different directions to land back home again.
    I’ve been struggling with improvisation. I know triads, and I have a handle on the intervals, it I can’t seem to sound creative when I improvise. I am hoping this helps. It sure felt like it did.

    So if the target notes for the I chord are 1,3,5 what are the target notes for the IV chord? I think you said to not worry about the numbers but im a little lost why you're choosing the notes you are.._ can someone help?

    • @fretjamguitar
      @fretjamguitar  5 лет назад +1

      Bottom line is I think it's best just to hear/feel it out. Major pentatonic is a versatile scale and will have you covered for most major key chord changes. But in the video, as the chord changes to IV, I do highlight specific colour tones to target over that chord. Again, don't think so much about interval numbers, rather the positions within the pattern highlighted, and approach/phrase around them in different ways using the rest of the pattern. Choose one target note at a time each time around. This is mostly about training your ears to connect with a visual awareness of where you are in the pattern for a given chord.

    Mr Fret>Jam, have you considered setting up a Patreon page for this channel? I follow someone here on RUclips who has a Patreon page and only asks a maximum of one dollar a month via Patreon; this content creator is a little more prolific than you (!) but out of your 150,00+ followers, several hundred or so contributing regularly each month would be a reasonable sum of money to devote to your running costs. Anyone else agree with me?

    • @fretjamguitar
      @fretjamguitar  5 лет назад

      I have considered it. I need to figure out what extra content I can offer patrons, otherwise it's the same as making a monthly donation via Paypal, which I do invite. The fees work out roughly the same. So the only difference with Patreon is it gives you a platform to offer exclusive content to those who donate. It's on my radar!

      +Don Atún Yep it's all major pentatonic. Kept it simple.

  • @Dcba964

    I love this lesson but i have a question please.... I notice that the F note is not in the C major pentatonic.... Anyway, the same C maj penta contains the 3rd and the 5th of F chord...Does it mean we can improvise with the C major penta over F chord without targeting special tones? Which are the best notes to play when comes the F chord? Why not using the F major penta or the F triad over F instead of keep playing the C maj penta? Hope you will help... I enjoy so much your lessons thanks so much for sharing your knowledge with us...

    • @fretjamguitar
      @fretjamguitar  7 лет назад

      I covered the absence of the F note in C major pentatonic in the first few minutes. It doesn't really matter as, like you say, there's a connection to Fmaj with the 3rd and 5th and there are other notes in C major pentatonic that colour Fmaj.
      The reason I kept the scale the same for both chords was to keep things simple, so you didn't have to think about changing positions on the neck for the chord change. But you could, if you wanted, play F major pentatonic over Fmaj.
      The best notes to play are always the ones that sound good to your ears. Explore the scale by targeting different notes and your ears will pick up on what sounds good. The reason major pentatonic is good for starting out with scales is because it's so versatile.

    why it feels soooo wrong when I play F major scale over Fmajor chord..and when I play C major..its soo good??

    • @fretjamguitar
      @fretjamguitar  4 года назад +1

      C major pentatonic give us the maj7 of Fmaj which is why I think it sounds particularly colourful. Whereas if you change to F major pentatonic, you lose that maj7 tone.

    just an blurred observation here, but it seems the major third is really flexible in terms of target notes in major keys......? Like in blues at the IV chord, and this progression also.....? (edited: I mean the major chord in the progression, not of the root chord).

    • @fretjamguitar
      @fretjamguitar  6 лет назад

      +One World Yes the major 3rd has a strong harmonic function. Very useful to know where it lies over each major chord in the progression.

    First of all, thanks for the lesson. But I got a question. Why are you using the first position of the pentatonic scale as if it where A minor pentatonic scale?

    • @fretjamguitar
      @fretjamguitar  8 лет назад +1

      +malcolmsur A minor pentatonic uses the same notes and patterns as C major pentatonic.

    • @carltaylor4942

      It can be a bit confusing as the patterns are the same - just that A minor pentatonic starts on the A note and C Major pentatonic starts on the C note.
