Gee, it's almost like one of the purposes of mandatory schooling is to make up for the fact that not all parents are good parents... (Yes, I know teachers can't replace parents, but still - what do you propose we do to help the children of assholes? Part of the point of school is to break the cycle.)
Pendlera School is mandatory because people need education in order to do every-day things as adults and to work and give children opportunities. Its purpose is not to parent. Yes, I will teach my students to be good humans. But I should not be expected to be the only person teaching a child right from wrong when I have literally hundreds of students and lots of material to teach, as well. I know some kids have rough home lives, but there are soooo many changes to fix this that have to be made in many parts of society and education is NOT necessarily where it “starts”. I love my students and will protect them with my life and I will give them what they need to the best of my ability but there are so many inter-related issues out there that need to be fixed. We need to stop relying on education to fix everything when it is more complex than “teach them better”.

I'm constantly telling my students to sit up, get out of bed, or don't lay on the couch. Then at back to school night on Zoom, parents are doing the same damn thing. So disrespectful.

Oh this is 100 % accurate except we can't say "well that explains the issues we are having, " so we say, " I see." And yes as an art teacher I have gotten blatant plagiarism. If you live in Texas your backyard wildlife photography assignment shouldn't be a beautiful butterfly only native to South American rain forest. No laptops in the loo, but I have seen alot of bunkbed gymnastics. And the flip-flopping between virtual and in person means 4 weeks into school i still do not have all my classlist to make social distance seating charts.
Yep... absolutely the kinds of stuff we have to make calls about. One interaction I had with a mom years ago: Me: No, your son should not be trying to use the student in a wheelchair as a battering ram. The mom: Oh... ... well, I guess I'll just have to take away his jet skis for the weekend then. Me:

Totally agree. And to top it all, we have to go to great lengths to justify our decisions, as common sense seems to have flown out of the window as far as most millennial parents are converned. It's their sense of entitlement that grinds me down!
The sad part this is a real thing. People are not staying virtual for 9 weeks. They are letting them come.back for the same reason why they cant be at school. No, no, no in spring you weren't getting graded on it and we are all new to it. NOW you are being graded on it and it's not all rainbows and popsicles. Parents are being held accountable and they dont want to "deal" with THEIR children.
Bingo! My daughter was in her last year of private school when Covid school started after spring break. She didn't like it at all. She really needs peer interaction. So for her first year of high school, we all thought it best to do Brick and Mortar since every one of her classes other than her sport team is AP. She is back to being happy, engaged, and loving the structure of going to school, completeing assignments, etc. If your child didn't like virtual, or struggled with any aspects of homeschooling then why wouldn't you just send them back to school? She is an only child and we tried homeschooling for one year during elementary. Many years ago. And it just wasnt for her. She was so sad and it really was a hard year on her. I couldn't imagine putting her through that again.

While teaching a 4th grade math lesson, I had a virtual student turn off the zoom meeting without any explanation. I was told later that she doesn't like math so she decided to turned me off! Love virtual learning! Lol
Most of my students show up for reading, in the morning. By ten, when I teach math, they are done. I get about half of them that return to class. I am going to have some pissed off parents, when I hand out grades in November.
Lessons learned: Don’t do virtual show and tell with Kindergarteners. While one girl was talking about her bear, out of nowhere her brother swats at the camera with a fly swatter and won’t stop.... Later I had a kid show me his soccer ball (he called it a basketball) and then proceeded to put it on the table, get up ON the table, and say “teacher, watch, I can stand on it and do tricks.” Needless to say we ended that show and tell session very quickly. 🤣

As a parent of a tween on virtual learning until January, I can see how it could go that way rapidly. Thank heavens I have higher expectations of my child, and I believe I have demonstrated that I'll back up the teachers if my child pulls stuff like that! I want my child to actually do well as an adult, and not be a problem for everyone around him!
I have friends that parent (or in my opinion not parent) their kids like that and it drives me crazy. Then when their kids get older and they have issues with them they can’t seem to understand why. Even though I warn them what’s inevitably going to happen if they don’t parent them. I can’t stand when parents let the kids make all the decisions like they are little adults and equals. It’s fine, when appropriate, to let them help make some decisions as they need to learn those skills as well, but again they should be decisions that are child appropriate not the adult decisions that are the job of the parent.
Our kid's principal sent an email out praising parents, teachers, and students about how great they've been doing going virtual. In the middle of the email it mentioned stuff about having kids wear appropriate clothes to the zooms and that if the mic is on parents shouldn't cuss in the background. Also please wear clothes when you are in the background of the zooms. Apparently some parents like to vacuum in their underwear.

With the compulsory education laws, the government took the responsibility of educating children out of parents hands and said, “that’s our responsibility now”. It’s been like that for a very very long time, so your response is quite harsh and a tad ignorant. I was homeschooled as a child, and I homeschool my children. It was my choice- what many parents are doing now was not their choice, but instead forced upon them without any notice or time to prepare. Would you feel the same if all of a sudden other basic, first-world amenities were turned on their head. How would you like to now be in charge of hauling away your own trash, supplying your own water, being responsible for the roads on your commute... all while still trying to work a 9-5?...
Sorry all of us parents are not measuring up to all of the educators out there. Educators that learn their trade from years of dedicated study in College. Those same educators that like to strike every couple of years. Those same bunch who in my area complain of not having a contract under which they can work. Sorry many of us parents also have these distractions called jobs which facilitate erything (including tax payments, some of which go to municipal school systems). Sincere apologies all around
@@ruthresetar5940 I tweeted out that each classroom needs a minimum of three teachers and a para. 1-providing general instruction 1-monitoring chat 1-sending and replying to emails Para (maybe 2) -providing SPED support. The online classroom sizes are too large for one teacher to handle. Online/Remote Teaching has to be structured very differently from a traditional classroom set-up. The teachers need support from administrators and the School Board to allow this to happen.
Just wait until you teach in the classroom AND continue to be responsible for online learning. You know the saying, "It can't get worse?" A fresh hell awaits.

I'm a college professor, and I actually had a student take the laptop to the bathroom on video. He sat it on the floor between his feet and leaned over to look at the screen while he took care of business...😳 (He did not wash his hands afterward either.)
I've had to make calls like that even before the pandemic because I teach middle school Special Education. If it's not a call home, it's an IEP goal similar to that.
I have literally given up on getting my students and parents to cooperate with this digital learning. I was spending hours on the phone and sending emails for every missed assignment, only to be ignored anyway. The parents are going to be pissed when I fail their children in November. I would say I have a consistent 6/22 students who are actually doing their online assignments/quizzes and online meetings. I was driving to campus every Friday, to hand out learning materials for the following week. Two parent showed up. I gave up on that too. It was a waste of my time and energy. If they fire me...go ahead!
Sadly a lot of families didn't realize how different fall virtual learning would be from the spring. In my district, families that chose virtual learning in Aug. aren't allowed back into the physical classroom until January even if the virtual learning isn't going well for their family. I support families having the choice to do what is best for their child, but they should also be able to change their mind if they now realize physical school is better for their child (and keep them from falling behind).

In my comment I wasn't referring to the spring period of school closures. My school district has a large percentage of students currently doing virtual learning (families had an option), but the virtual teachers are struggling with getting students to participate. Either families are working and aren't available to help their students, or they don't have the language or technological capabilities to help their child. I don't believe kindergarten students should be sitting in front of a screen for eight hours a day. they don't do that in a regular classroom, but that's what they're being forced to do if they chose virtual learning. And they are also missing out on the social emotional learning that occurs alongside peers in a classroom. I am glad that the option is there for students who need to be protected. But I also think that if a family started out learning virtually and makes the request to have their child placed back in the classroom then that should be allowed. They shouldn't have to wait until Christmas to do what's best for their child. We are all learning and doing our best to get through this pandemic.

Gotta love it 😒 My favorite so far as a para this year has been when I just finished up reading a test to an in school learner and 1 student on google meet, only to have another kid join google meet 15 minutes before class ended to hear the test being read. Where were you when class started?! The other one was when I was reading a test to both in class and e-learning students, and two in class kids decided to refuse to take the test and one almost left the classroom 🤦♀️ Middle schoolers mind you.
It is really something when you see the kid taking his or her tablet or computer to the car and the next thing you know, he or she is going somewhere on the road with the parents.
Gerry was being extremely gentle about the foolishness that it is going on with some of these kids during their classroom learning time. One would assume that since the kids (especially the K-5 kiddos) are at home, there would be more active supervision occurring. Kids are: *showing up in PJs or just their boxer briefs *posting inappropriate comments on chat *dancing (during ELA or Math) *not paying attention and then asking the teacher to repeat herself/himself multiple times - which slows down the class *not knowing where their school supplies are (that the school supplied) and then claiming they didn't receive them *blurting out nonsense to classmates (like Roblox usernames) during instruction *sleeping *blowing into the microphone *having full blown conversation with family members during instruction and not muting - so the whole class hears the convo Plus, I've heard so many "I'm about to get my belt" from parents screaming in the background that it's frightening. Remote learning could be an amazing experience if parents partnered with the teachers. The parents need to set up a suitable learning space (kitchen/dining room table, student desk, coffee table - whatever they are capable of doing that is NOT the child's bed), have all of the students school supplies in a backpack, box, or on a shelf. Then, the parents need to be actively monitoring their kids to ensure they are staying on task. Not screaming at them... monitoring. Parent should also be enforcing the guidelines for appropriate computer and classroom etiquette. I'm hoping teachers will be making more phone calls to parents to see if the parents need some assistance, because the kids who are ready and willing to learn are being exposed to a negative learning experience.
I just finished my first four days of virtual teaching. (High School Math) and the structure I created was to give them a teaching video as their homework, and then we'd spend the first half of the period with them working on the group assignment in breakout groups, and the second half of the period is for them to work independently (or together) on the rest of the assignment. I'm available during the entire 130-minute class to help them. I had two girls email me repeatedly during the independent study time that they didn't get it, but regardless of my multiple attempts to get them to come to the virtual classroom for help, neither of them even bothered. Basically they want me to hold their hands outside of class time and nurse them through their issues, but are unwilling to get help DURING class time. It's frustrating.
I hear you. I genuinely don't understand why there is a chat function allowed. Turn it off. Turn off the cameras of students being distracting. Turn off the mics. When a teacher asks a question, students "raise hands" and the teacher turns on their mic abilities. I think kids are being allowed too much control of the screen, personally. We actually minimized the chat box on our kids' screens. It's not necessary 95% of the time.
I don't see the point in complaining about the kid's clothes or where they're learning. I was homeschooled and I learned just fine in my bed and wearing whatever was comfortable. Seriously, pick your battles.
@@pendlera2959 In a traditional homeschool setting, it's just the child and the child's family in their private residence with the student receiving instructional material however the family deems most suitable. In remote online public school - kids are in class, via a computer screen, with MANY other students around. Showing up in clothes matters😒. Taking the laptop into the bathroom...matters.

Every week more virtual learners come back and it’s like getting new students all the time. I am a teacher during all of this and it really is awful. Parents thought distant meant they just didn’t have to do school at all. So we have to start over and over and over.

Times have changed indeed. The only time my mother didn't respond to a call from a school administrator with her shoe, a ruler, a wooden spoon or a fly swatter across the whole back side of my body was when I corrected the principal's mispronounciation of my name. I was six and he thought it was funny. I can count on one hand how many times my mother got called from school because I messed up.
Parents need to be parent, however, I don't put all the blame on them. Schools and district that cowtaw to parents every time there is an issue and don't support the teachers trying to have standards are also an issue.
When my oldest was in public school the admin were surprised at me actually taking them seriously when I got thos kind of call. They said they had a lot of kids that didnt care or react at all when they threaten to call the parents.

The online classroom sizes are too large for one teacher to handle. Online/Remote Teaching has to be structured very differently from a traditional classroom set-up. The teachers need support from administrators and the School Board to allow this to happen.

I've had to make calls like that even before the pandemic because I teach middle school Special Education. If it's not a call home, it's an IEP goal similar to that.
I have literally given up on getting my students and parents to cooperate with this digital learning. I was spending hours on the phone and sending emails for every missed assignment, only to be ignored anyway. The parents are going to be pissed when I fail their children in November. I would say I have a consistent 6/22 students who are actually doing their online assignments/quizzes and online meetings. I was driving to campus every Friday, to hand out learning materials for the following week. Two parent showed up. I gave up on that too. It was a waste of my time and energy. If they fire me...go ahead!

Sadly a lot of families didn't realize how different fall virtual learning would be from the spring. In my district, families that chose virtual learning in Aug. aren't allowed back into the physical classroom until January even if the virtual learning isn't going well for their family. I support families having the choice to do what is best for their child, but they should also be able to change their mind if they now realize physical school is better for their child (and keep them from falling behind).
@@ruthresetar5940 I agree with your comment and feel our world does not understand child development or developmentally appropriate practices. In my comment I wasn't referring to the spring period of school closures. My school district has a large percentage of students currently doing virtual learning (families had an option), but the virtual teachers are struggling with getting students to participate. Either families are working and aren't available to help their students, or they don't have the language or technological capabilities to help their child. I don't believe kindergarten students should be sitting in front of a screen for eight hours a day. they don't do that in a regular classroom, but that's what they're being forced to do if they chose virtual learning. And they are also missing out on the social emotional learning that occurs alongside peers in a classroom. I am glad that the option is there for students who need to be protected. But I also think that if a family started out learning virtually and makes the request to have their child placed back in the classroom then that should be allowed. They shouldn't have to wait until Christmas to do what's best for their child. We are all learning and doing our best to get through this pandemic.
@@ruthresetar5940 I get your point, but there will be a lot of kids who are behind those kids whose parents were able to help them progress more or less normally. Kids whose parents could afford to stay home or hire a tutor.

Gotta love it 😒 My favorite so far as a para this year has been when I just finished up reading a test to an in school learner and 1 student on google meet, only to have another kid join google meet 15 minutes before class ended to hear the test being read. Where were you when class started?! The other one was when I was reading a test to both in class and e-learning students, and two in class kids decided to refuse to take the test and one almost left the classroom 🤦♀️ Middle schoolers mind you.

It is really something when you see the kid taking his or her tablet or computer to the car and the next thing you know, he or she is going somewhere on the road with the parents.
Gerry was being extremely gentle about the foolishness that it is going on with some of these kids during their classroom learning time.
One would assume that since the kids (especially the K-5 kiddos) are at home, there would be more active supervision occurring.
Kids are:
*showing up in PJs or just their boxer briefs
*posting inappropriate comments on chat
*dancing (during ELA or Math)
*not paying attention and then asking the teacher to repeat herself/himself multiple times - which slows down the class
*not knowing where their school supplies are (that the school supplied) and then claiming they didn't receive them
*blurting out nonsense to classmates (like Roblox usernames) during instruction
*sleeping
*blowing into the microphone
*having full blown conversation with family members during instruction and not muting - so the whole class hears the convo
Plus, I've heard so many "I'm about to get my belt" from parents screaming in the background that it's frightening.
Remote learning could be an amazing experience if parents partnered with the teachers. The parents need to set up a suitable learning space (kitchen/dining room table, student desk, coffee table - whatever they are capable of doing that is NOT the child's bed), have all of the students school supplies in a backpack, box, or on a shelf. Then, the parents need to be actively monitoring their kids to ensure they are staying on task. Not screaming at them... monitoring.
Parent should also be enforcing the guidelines for appropriate computer and classroom etiquette.
I'm hoping teachers will be making more phone calls to parents to see if the parents need some assistance, because the kids who are ready and willing to learn are being exposed to a negative learning experience.
I just finished my first four days of virtual teaching. (High School Math) and the structure I created was to give them a teaching video as their homework, and then we'd spend the first half of the period with them working on the group assignment in breakout groups, and the second half of the period is for them to work independently (or together) on the rest of the assignment. I'm available during the entire 130-minute class to help them. I had two girls email me repeatedly during the independent study time that they didn't get it, but regardless of my multiple attempts to get them to come to the virtual classroom for help, neither of them even bothered. Basically they want me to hold their hands outside of class time and nurse them through their issues, but are unwilling to get help DURING class time. It's frustrating.
I hear you. I genuinely don't understand why there is a chat function allowed. Turn it off. Turn off the cameras of students being distracting. Turn off the mics. When a teacher asks a question, students "raise hands" and the teacher turns on their mic abilities. I think kids are being allowed too much control of the screen, personally. We actually minimized the chat box on our kids' screens. It's not necessary 95% of the time.
I don't see the point in complaining about the kid's clothes or where they're learning. I was homeschooled and I learned just fine in my bed and wearing whatever was comfortable. Seriously, pick your battles.
@@pendlera2959 In a traditional homeschool setting, it's just the child and the child's family in their private residence with the student receiving instructional material however the family deems most suitable. In remote online public school - kids are in class, via a computer screen, with MANY other students around. Showing up in clothes matters😒. Taking the laptop into the bathroom...matters.
@@MrsSonyaKS I agree about taking the laptop into the bathroom. But before I was homeschooled I remember our school having pajama days, so I don't think PJs are that bad. It mostly sounds like a new version of the school uniform debate.
Every week more virtual learners come back and it’s like getting new students all the time. I am a teacher during all of this and it really is awful. Parents thought distant meant they just didn’t have to do school at all. So we have to start over and over and over.

Times have changed indeed. The only time my mother didn't respond to a call from a school administrator with her shoe, a ruler, a wooden spoon or a fly swatter across the whole back side of my body was when I corrected the principal's mispronounciation of my name. I was six and he thought it was funny. I can count on one hand how many times my mother got called from school because I messed up.
Parents need to be parent, however, I don't put all the blame on them. Schools and district that cowtaw to parents every time there is an issue and don't support the teachers trying to have standards are also an issue.

When my oldest was in public school the admin were surprised at me actually taking them seriously when I got thos kind of call. They said they had a lot of kids that didnt care or react at all when they threaten to call the parents.
