    I’m truly saddened by the sterilization of many, many of the females in the different troops. Man wherever he is has to be the king and manage everything according to his thinking. God balances everything and does not need our help. I am truly saddened for these unfortunate monkeys who were sterilized. 😢😭

      My heart thinks that too - especially with that description of living "a lonely and purposeless existence" :( But my head also worries that if they didn't curb their numbers would they expand into the city of Hong Kong with all the problems that brings? I don't know - I've just seen those TV shows that document some Indian towns where the macaques live side-by-side with the humans and the humans treat them as pests because they steal food and make a hell of a mess.

    • @mamaboocee
      @mamaboocee Год назад +1

      @@SamDeeksRelovedGuitars yes, I saw those videos from India, too. There videos about the towns that are in south Africa that have the same problem with Baboons and how they handle it (not successfully I gather). Also, Gibralter tourism has a monkey problem, as well.
      The monkey chasers in India are something else! Imagine getting paid to deter monkeys!
      All those foreign cities and towns seem to not have screens on the windows and doors. The climate dictates that the windiws and doors stay open - but I imagine a screen is no deterrent for a monkey. And bars on the windows - we can easily see just how small the juveniles are, the grates would have to have very small opening to keep out macaques or baboons, even vervets and langors. Most of the citizens don't have enough money to put grates on their windows. Civilization is really encroaching on what is left any wildlife habitat. This world seems to be past the tipping point of disaster in one form or another. I just hate seeing the innocent wildlife suffer for the greediness of the few very wealthy (and not so wealthy!).

      @philbert006 Год назад +1

      Well, to decimate a troop would be far better, as that would mean to target/remove/whatever only 10%. I think they should just leave them alone, but that's not practical anymore. Their population is out of control, which is a human created problem to begin with. They would not boom like that if o people weren't constantly feeding them. Their population would find a number that the land could support, and that would be that. But humans have increased their food supply exponentially, so thru will grow to fill that vacuum. They are more healthy, the babies more likely to survive, they are less likely to be in competition for resources, and they live and breed for way longer than they would naturally. People have created a situation that nature cannot support, nor are people willing to deal with the consequences, so they are doing what we do best and destroying the balance of nature to right our wrong. At least they do not cull them.

    Nora’s troop is small to begin with. They needn’t focus on her Troop. Skull Head’s troop (or whoever is Alpha there) is the troop they should focus on. And sterilize some males. I understand the need for population control but they have no idea how damaging it is to take away their reproduction abilities forever! Nor do they care. They should go back to the 3 year version in my opinion. And it’s so tricky to lure them into the cage. Monkeys are food driven and they know they’ll a fair amount in that cage. I hate it for them.

      Mr AM had said before that they only sterilize monkeys that are 3 years or older. Now, this was mentioned some years ago, back when they had the y tattoos going strong last. The policy may have changed, and I would assume they make mistakes from time to time. But that's what he had said in the past. Makes sense. They need to mature a little of they are going to do such a terrible thing. If not it would surely screw their hormones and mess with their minds even more than it already does.

      @@sonyabilledo4303 that's just not true. When you alter a body in such a dramatic fashion, there will be issues, particularly tampering with reproductive systems. It's just not that simple. The entire body is a complex set of systems all working together, and other than staying alive, the primary purpose is to pass on your genes. Why do you think the females that get spayed behave so differently? Their body is compelling them to do something through hormones, and it cannot physically manifest. Hormones for baby making in particular are released by the ovaries, carried by the bloodstream into the brain, where they trigger the responses that become evident behaviors. Cutting and cauterizing the passage the eggs use to exit the body won't stop the compulsion to mate, won't stop instincts from telling them to learn about babies, to stop preparing for being a mother. But they never alleviate these compulsions because their ability to become a mother is taken. Even removing the ovaries entirely, a hysterectomy, won't stop those instincts, the hormones, or the compulsions and desires. They aren't grabbing babies and babysitting and watching mothers intently with their little ones simply because it's entertaining. And perhaps modern medicine and biologists will attempt to tell you that it won't affect them. But you only need observe. Tampering with the systems of the body always has consequences and effects that we can't fully see or understand, regardless of how much money gets thrown at it or time is spent observing it. It is simplified like that only because we as humans feel the need to justify and rationalize our interfering and influencing things to get the result we desire instead of the one nature has developed and perfected over the course of millions of years. To think we have it all figured out in a few decades of meddling is one of our biggest follies, and it's one we apply to all sorts of things, many of which have come back to vote is in the booty, and many more that we are only beginning to see, as well as plenty that have not yet manifested the consequences.

      NO MATRIARCH SHOULD EVER BE STERILIZED. There is no if, but, or maybe. Sterilizing a matriarch is scientifically unsound. Macaques are not here to entertain humans.
      I'm sorry to say your idea is not feasible. More importantly it is not cost effective. No country has the resources to select certain macaques for sterilization out of the thousands. Think about it, sterilization of the old, sick or unstable DOESN'T AFFECT THE BIRTH RATE AT ALL BECAUSE THESE FEMALES ARE NOT CONCEIVING AND/OR THEIR OFFSPRING ARE DYING. The population of macaques has to be controlled or culling (killing) will begin. Rhesus macaques are not native to Hong Kong thus their main predator seems to be cars and angry humans.
      I also have found myself strangely bonded to each and every troop member. The sterilization of any female especially the young make me very sad. IT HAS TO BE DONE TO SAVE THE REST. I SO WORRY THAT CULLING WILL HAPPEN IF THE STERILIZATION PROGRAM IS INAFFECTIVE. The killing of some if not all of the members we have come to love would be absolutely devastating. The sterilization program may in fact save them all.
      The real problem is there are just too many people on this planet, habitat is being destroyed and wildlife is dying out. If you want to make a difference. Live simply, so life can simply live and stop reproducing.

    • @philbert006
      @philbert006 Год назад +1

      That would not solve anything. The problem is the abundance of food they receive from people. The monkey population would level out wherever nature could support it. But people are feeding them and have been. So now they are healthier, they have more energy, they do not have to compete for food, they live much longer and are able to breed longer. Out wouldn't matter which troops they went after. The population will always grow to take advantage of the available resources. There's always going to be a balance, and we have upset it by interfering with nature and feeding them constantly, and now folks are upset that there are too many of them. It's a real mess, and it's sad.

      @@philbert006 In theory I understand your point. Food availability does keep populations in balance. The old, young, sickly and low-borns will die out due to starvation. Moreover, many macaques might not conceive yearly, and the miscarriage rate will increase.
      Limiting food availability doesn't work in this situation.
      Hong Kong has its own issues.
      1. Rhesus macaques are not native, thus there is no real predators other than cars.
      2. Homeowners do not want Rhesus Macaques invading their home in an effort to obtain food either looking through their trash, gardens or fruit trees. Sometimes macaques can enter homes and/or apartments and cause destruction and downright havoc.
      3. Rhesus Macaques migration to the city will cause an increase in car accidents. Humans don't want their commute delayed, their car or tires damaged nor any bodily harm to them caused by a car accident. Moreover, some people just don't want to accidently kill a monkey.
      By removing food availability, this will encourage macaque migration into the neighborhoods and city. Car accidents will increase. Home and/or apartments broken into, increase in property damage, trash, garden and fruit trees invaded. Anger and hostility will increase towards the macaque. Human injury by macaques will occur because macaques will defend their troop. AN INCREASE IN MACAQUE ANIMAL ABUSE AND KILLINGS WILL DEFINITELY OCCUR.
      The ONLY ANSWER IS STERILIZATION AND CONTINUED FOOD SUPPLEMENTATION. The sterilization program will help to decrease the macaque population to a manageable number. The continued food supplementation will encourage troops to remain on Monkey Hill.
      The troops near the roads were sterilized at a higher number, which makes total since. A viewer mentioned that car crashes are high in the area due to macaques trying to cross the busy road. Decreasing these troops number might decrease the car accidents in the area. This will hopefully decrease the anger many people might have towards our favorite primates.
      Unfortunately, if the sterilization program is not affective in decreasing the macaque population to a manageable number, Hong Kong may cull like many other countries do. I hate to see any female sterilized but culling would be absolutely horrific.

      Ich denke, die Affen sitzen an der Straße, weil sie dort gefüttert werden.
      Würde man sie im Wald füttern, wären sie nicht an der Straße. Es gäbe keine Autounfälle.
      Aber man möchte die Affen als Attraktion für den Tourismus haben.
      Wenn man die Truppen, die sich jetzt ihren Fressplatz an der Straße erobert haben, verkleinert, ist das keine Lösung des Problems.
      Es werden später andere Truppen aus dem Wald kommen und die Plätze an der Straße einnehmen, wenn sie bemerken , daß Plätze an der Futterstraße frei werden.
      Ist das etwa das Ziel, alle Affen aus dem Wald an die Straße zu locken und sie nach und nach zu reduzieren? Würde das nicht ein riesiges Durcheinander in die Affengruppen bringen und künstliche Rivalität???
      Eine Ausrottung in kleinen Schritten, damit es kein großes Massaker gibt? Unsichtbar für Menschen, die die einzelnen Affen nicht mit Namen kennen?

    @The Story So Far
    Hi AM - you may have already addressed my concerns, so forgive the repetition. I know these "veterinarians" don't have a clue about these individual monkeys, their families, much less their names, etc and just sterilize the unfortunate ones who fall victim to their traps.
    1. When they trap these monkeys for sterilization, is the process an overnight Catch, Neuter, Release the following day? Or are they away from their families longer than 24 hours?
    2. Don't they also neuter the males?
    I don't comment often these days so allow me to thank you for your substantial effort in bringing joy to so many of us through your beautiful Monkey Hill videos. Through your travels and there in Hong Kong, you've shown me several exotic locations in the world I'll never get to see in person. You are a true blessing and a rare, one of a kind gift to so many in your audience.
    I share your concerns regarding change. The unelected bureaucrats' favorite buzz word seems to be "deindustrialization." Has me wondering how people who live in areas with hot/cold temperature extremes (like the Southwest states in the US where I reside) are going to stay warm/cool without air conditioning. Not liking their idea of 15 minute cities - where they'll have humanity "housed" like lab monkeys, etc.
    Stakeholder capitalism after China's model, sadly.

      They must know the monkeys some how. AM said that the Matriarch's are spared. So, if they don't know them someone else sure does and that is disturbing. To know someone knows these monkeys well enough to know who the matriarch is and yet the one's that shouldn't be sterilized are and the one's that should be aren't.
