When you said what you did about being told to pick up roast beef off the floor, wash it and put it back on the slicer I remembered a restaurant I worked at in college. Expensive cut of beef used for steak sandwiches was sliced daily. One time the cook slicing it nicked their finger. Most places, a drop of blood on a pile of expensive meat would result in 'pick off the meat it touched and throw that away.' Not this owner. He threw the whole pile out. I doubt anyone EVER got sick from this place's food. He deservedly was very well respected by his workers and the whole town.

In my teens, I worked housekeeping, for a local resort hotel & would pass thru the kitchen on a regular basis.. nearly every day I would walk in on a food fight involving salads & shrimp.. the staff was told to clean it up & use the food for diners. Yuck!! To this day, forty years later, I refuse to eat there..

I've broken a "seagull manager" before. His idea of "inspiring" his crew to work harder/faster was to cuss them out... while customers were around. I got complaints about this nightly. SUPER fun guy to work under, as you might imagine. Also, has nothing to do with how I broke him.
The short of it is that he kept informing me (a mere cashier) along with our supervisor of the impossible goals he was setting for us, and when I calmly and reasonably pointed out why that logically couldn't work, he found he COULD NOT say it to me anymore. I was being reasonable. I was not being disrespectful in my manner. When he realized I would not simply say, "Wow! Sure, boss, we'll get that done!" he broke down and would force my supervisor to parrot his line of what our orders were. This was a woman who walked away a few moments before agreeing with me. I'm sure any observers of this interaction were highly amused. I'm told my facial expressions are as clear as spoken words, so he would still have understood my meaning without my words, which I didn't say in response to his making a puppet of our supervisor.

Someone I know once got a satnav, this was when they were still a new thing, and to test it they set it up for their work route one day. The satnav told them to turn down a road they wouldn't normally go down so they called it a stupid thing and ignored it. This happened in Warsaw, which for those who don't know has a massive river going through it that goes through Poland almost splitting the whole country in half. When the person I know didn't turn at the turn where the satnav told them to, they got told to turn left while they were on the road where just left of them was this river.
Yeah, old satnavs at least could apparently be able to write in r/prorevenge

33:00: the pizza MC reminded me of a story from my sister about a woman who wanted her burger put through the cooker twice. The cashier tried to tell her that the burger would come out dried and gross, but she bit his head off. The cashier sent the order through. My sister came out front and said the same thing. The woman bit her head off, my sister gave her a “slap your face off for disrespecting me” look, went in the back and did as demanded. Everyone knows how big a whopper is. What came out was a hockey puck. Same size, same color, same hardness. She tapped the burger and it made a knocking sound. My sister nonchalantly made the burger with the cashier giving her a wide eyed look. She shooed him out and waited. A few seconds later, psycho woman came back and began tearing into the cashier. My sister went out and began tearing into her, reminding her of what she wanted, how she was warned twice and how she wouldn’t listen. She offered to make one more and make it the suggested way, but if she insisted on a double cooking, she may as well eat the current burger because the second one would end up the same way. She reluctantly agreed

In life you have to balance out 3 things Time, health and money.
Too much time -without money is you being unemployed -missing health you are sick and unable to work.
A lot of money -without time means you are working your ass off and can't see your friends. missing health is a burn out waiting to happen.
Healthy -without money is you working to just barely feed yourself -without time means you are in debt desperately trying to clear your debt.

The "machines must have no down time" reminded me of Jim Collins book Good to Great. That book's message was that productivity had to consider contribution to the end goals. The bottleneck in such situations is almost always shortage of inventory storage space.

My family comes from the prairies but I grew up in the mountains.
When asking for directions at a small prairie gas station I got “head towards Tom’s old house and about 5 miles out turn left where the old church use to be”.
I called my cousin and he couldn’t do much better so I made him come and meet us at the gas station and lead us to my aunts house. It was 9pm and I NEVER would have found that place.

Noisy neighbor: I heard a story, probably in the 80s, of somebody dealing with a downstairs neighbor who used to play music overly loud in the middle of the night. He drilled a hole to the neighbor's ceiling and dropped an ultrasonic transducer. He set it to turn on every time the stereo hit a certain sound level. It would give the victim a bad headache. He reported seeing the downstairs swapping out his audio equipment, and eventually playing at a lower level.

I agree that in the greenhouse story it was ridiculous that the Karen was complaining about the screws in the patio.
But 22 screw holes? 22? WTF? That must be a huge greenhouse. Unless it was a 10m x 10m greenhouse then that was an insane amount of screws just to attach it. 6 would have been more than enough.

57:03, well Rob, imaging having 40hrs of PTO (paid time off) & not being able to use it to cover a day you missed due to being sick. That's the position our co-workers & I are at, where we have to notify 5 business days beforehand, in writing, so we can get our PTO. I always tell my co-workers "well, I guess I'm going to have to notify 5 days in advance if I'm going to get sick."

Too many managers and owners work for their ego instead of the interest of the company...
It's like managers and the people hiring them have no clue about the purpose of their position and company.
Writing someone up for leaving 5min early ONE TIME is never in the interest of the company...

I'm just going to say this: If I ever get in a situation where I'm doing the workload of 2 or more people and don't get the commensurate raise, my place of work will be another person short. If they don't want to get with the times (and pay the workers), they can flounder. I'm not gonna be the last rat on that sinking ship.

57:04 I would take advantage of that soon much. "Hey boss, I'm planning on getting sick near holidays. No it's not because I plan to extend my vacations". In my country you can't be fired justifiably unless you get more than 3 unjustified absences in a 30 day period. So even if I get sick (and that's justified) I can us those days.

When I was in college, I had a real asshole as a professor. Just before midterm exams, I hurt my shoulder really bad and couldn't lift my right arm. This exam was a three hour essay exam, to do written by hand. I went to see him in his office, asking if I could make it up. He said no. I then asked if I could take it in the computer lab, and he could hold on to my notes and books. He told me, "No. Just drop out because you should've planned on it." Wtf! I did the best I could, wrote my essays in excruciating pain. The following day, I went to the doctor and was told to stay home for the next two weeks and given a sling. So I went to see the dept head, my note, and explained what asshole told me. Dept head looked up my grades and saw I had a 4.0 GPA for the past two years. He was furious. Asshole got chewed a new one. At the end of the semester, I filled out his evaluation. I wrote that he told me drop out of school because I should've planned on getting hurt. Perhaps he should quit his job because he he might get struck by lightning.

Sat navs are only as good as the data they receive as not all roads may be marked like it will say turn right and there's a right down a dirt track 20 feet before the metalled right people may go down the dirt track instead,so whilst a sat nav is useful they should be coupled with common sense. They also usually go the quickest route which doesn't take Into account sketchy neighbourhoods you really should avoid if you're not a local. If a sat nav is taking you through hedges, ponds, over cliffs and passing murder scenes you're going the wrong way.
