Thanks for such a clear demonstration on setting Stephenson valve timing.

Thank you for the great Video. It looked very complex on first viewing but after the fifth viewing and taking notes I was confident to try setting the valve gear on the Stirling Single I am building.
The method of the setting up was so good the engine ran on air in both forward and reverse without the need for any further checking !!

I am glad it helped. Very little info on this subject on the net.

Good video. Have you made a video of you adjusting the eccentrics? I would love to see a demonstration of adjustment. I understand finding the dead centers, it would just be cool to see you correct some bad timing in a video.

Put the engine on front center and forward gear. Look to see which ecc. is pulling the valve back (open). Adjust that ecc. until the valve is just cracked open. Do the same for back dead center with same ecc. Adjust the valve position in the steam chest to make these 2 positions equal. Same for reverse and both cylinders. Takes awhile. Enjoy the process!!

This would be very helpful and when to adjust the reach link union

If I understand this right, when adjusting the forward gear accentrics, shouldn't the Johnson bar be in the full forward position? Likewise when adjusting the reverse accentrics it would need to be in the full reverse position?

Actually that doesn't matter, believe it or not.

I've studied Charles Dockstader's Valve Gear Simulator for outside admission Stephenson link motion and determined that it does matter a little when the eccentrics are set in their proper positions and it matters a lot when the eccentrics are not in their proper positions. The position of the valve should be checked in both full forward and reverse at the same dead center position to make sure the valve position is identical in each full setting, the edge of the valve being line in line with the edge of the port. If it isn't you know at least one of the eccentrics is out of alignment and will have to be reset.

Ben, look at the valve setting posts here:
    www.chaski.org/homemachinist/viewtopic.php?f=45&t=102017&hilit=hunslet&start=12
where I set the eccentrics on my Hunslet engine. You set them at front and rear dead centers. At that piston position the valve is just cracked open and you can move from fwd to rev without the valve moving. Johnson bar position doesn't matter.
