    Mr. Robertson we appreciate this kind of videos and the fact that you are kind enough to share your knowledge and experience, thank you. Now, I have a question: what was the cause of that failure in the “Spider Nest” or whatever is the real name of that part?

    My truck has problem when I turn differential switch on I hear air does something but only one rear wheel spinning on passenger side. What can be the problem? What's need be checked or replaced?

    Gordon, how many total miles does your truck have on it? I can relate to you having to wrestle with stuff by yourself. My son was my helper but he’s in the USMC now and far away from home. Don’t help to to be getting old either.

    • @57bagre
      @57bagre  5 лет назад +6

      1.5 m. miles. Good you had a son who would help. The new generation will never lay a finger on anything like that, and even if they would, they can't hear you with the ear buds on and can't see with the "gadget" glued to their eyes.

    my first thought was "that looks like a differential turned sideways, then I realized that's exactly what it is. instead of two perpendicular shafts to each wheel, it divides the power to the pinion of the front diff, or the shaft to the second.
    I take it your truck does not have a "locking" divider. Is that the equivalent of an "open differential?" I didn't see any clutches or anything like that to indicate it was some form of limited slip.

    • @57bagre
      @57bagre  5 лет назад +1

      I don't know much about what goes on in there, I don't think there's any limited slip but both diffs are always in play just not all 4 positions at the same time.

    Gordon never seen anyone only pull that part of one out or anyone rebuild one. Everyone is to lazy and always pulled it all out and had them rebuilt. But they usually have the teeth broke and lots of metal. Pulling the whole thing is a pain in butt.

      Only repairing the power divider is a bit of a gamble, the crown and pinion are right under the divider and the pinion turns counter clockwise, SO anything that comes off the divider drops directly down between the pinion and crown gears. Gordon's divider did not seem to be missing a lot of pieces so he may be OK. The divider is very heavy and is quite a handful to install, measuring the end play and installing the right shims horizontally is also challenging. Doing this job vertical in a swing jig is much better and you also get to verify the other parts are serviceable and set right. Piece of mind is often under rated.

    Gordon can you please share the driveline shop contact details. I'm in central mo a couple hours west of you and I'm getting some shaking on my 99 Classic. The dust cover came loose on the yoke pinion seal going into the divider and I'm trying to figure out the shaking. I may need to rebuild that divider like you did.

    • @57bagre
      @57bagre  5 лет назад

      I'm not comfortable doing that because he might start getting calls from people to pic his brain who have no intention of doing business with him. I'm sure there'r plenty of dealers and driveline shops in Columbia, JC and so forth. As for the dust cover, you can weld it on or take it off maybe you can get a new one and press it on. If you're serious about doing business with Vince I could arrange it when you're in the area.

    • @captainkirk3697
      @captainkirk3697 5 лет назад

      I priced the yoke, $200.00 at Columbia Freightliner.....the seal is 65 bucks....25 on eBay...... But like I said I'm getting some shaking between 25 and 30 mph.... The beveled dust good worked loose from. The yoke and was flipping, so I cut it off. But something else might have caused it to work loose. I guess the first step would be to check the tightness of the pinion bolt. I can't get any play out of the u joints or carrier bearing.

    • @captainkirk3697
      @captainkirk3697 5 лет назад

      "beveled dust hood worked loose"....spell check fail...."it was flopping around, so I cut it off with snips"

    • @57bagre
      @57bagre  5 лет назад

      You can live without it. I'm not thinking the driveshaft would shake at 25 - 30 only, it would continue to get worse the faster you go, so would a tire. Are you sure it's not an injector or something?

    Bad maintenance...never changed differential oil ....has to be changed once every 300,000 or every 3 years
