Great interview! Frank Zappa once described Aynsley as sounding like two drummers! 😀 In his Liverpool days in the early 60's, Aynsley was in a band called The Mojos, which also featured Lewis Collins, who later became an actor and was famous for his role as 'Bodie' in the British TV show action show "The Professionals." Lewis Collins also starred in the feature film Who Dares Wins.
Thanks for this interview. Aynsley has influenced so many drummers including myself. So many great tracks, any drummer must go through the early Journey stuff. Midnight Dreamer/I'm Gonna Leave You are two amazing tracks, plus Next is a killer, I think the first real double bass rock song drumming that transfered over to the WS album. Great back story to Smoke on the Water, I never connected that he was there. Frank Zappa saved a lot of lives by seeing the fire start and telling the crowd to calmly leave the building. Journey is currently in flux and Cain is out and Gregg is back, hopefully Schon calls Aynsley and puts the band back together, so many great songs could be played again.

Great points on Starship, Aynsley changed them, added to them, they became incredibly tight and rock heavy, same with WS, Whitesnake became the new hard rock sound that all the hair metal bands copied, Coverdale then stayed with that formula because it worked. Sammy Hagar is similar in that regard, if you listen to the first Montrose album Sammy never strayed from that formula or sound because it worked. Although I also love the earlier WS with Paice and then Powell. Give Bowie's Pin Ups a listen, think it was 72? Bowie did a covers album with Dunbar it's really cool.

@@domenicv7962 I don't care what Gene Krupa said dipstick. If you've ever seen the legendary Carl Palmer do a drum solo especially in the early 1970s you would never want it to end. Unlike Krupa he incorporates so many different percussion pieces along with his speed which is absolutely off the chain with his complex time signatures and rhythmic structure. He just doesn't sit behind his drum kit like Krupa or Buddy Rich he is all over the place. As a matter of fact take Buddy Rich put him on steroids and add gong's Orchestra Bells glockenspiel high-pitched tuned tomtom's and timbales with electronics built in with gong's Temple blocks all on a rotating drum kit and well you get the picture. After all he was drummer Neil peart's main inspiration as well as the inspiration to a large number of the progressive rock drummers that were popular in the day. You know what more can I say except don't knock something you haven't seen just because you're stuck on some old jazz drummers. Between Ansley and Tommy I can't chose so I go with both.
Grand Wazoo drumming is superb by Ainsley.
Saw him with Flo & Eddie at Slough college early 70’s! Zappa’s band at the time. I think Frank had broken his arm.
Great drummer, he played a Hayman kit on the first journey album!
Our 4 drummers Trevor Morais, Johnny Hutchinson , Aynsley and Richie The Inventors of the Liverpool Sound 🥁
So, John D., will Dunbar have a book on his career written??? HERE'S HOPING!!!
He would had been interesting in the who after Keith moon passed away.
Whitesnake journey, starship,Jeff beck, rod stewart.. he was on Peter grants short list for Bonham replacement
Believe it was a toss-up between him and Mitch Mitchell to join Jimi Hendrix.
I CANT CONTAIN MYSELF!!!!!!!!
I met AD through Mike Carney from Shrapnel Records where you can hear more of AD.
Interesting. Aynsley had an altercation with one of Grant’s henchmen in an LA hotel. The guy pulled a gun on AD, who faced him down.
I would have liked to have heard what Aynsley had to say about his time with John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers.
The only Mayall studio album that Peter Green played on following Clapton’s departure. John Mayall, Peter Green, John McVie and Aynsley.
IMO one of Mayall’s best. Supernatural still sounds great.. Aynsley was also responsible for the cover artwork . A missed opportunity.
great
He was thought about before Mitchell in the exp5
Pete Sears!!
One of the greatest
His work on Bowies Pinups was sublime
Love his playing
He also would had been interesting replacing Bill ward in black sabbath
Whitesnake!
Dunbar is such a versatile chameleon player…
❤️🎶🥁👍🏻
He looks young
I wish Ansley would have stayed in Journey, it was selfish Steve Perry that caused him to leave. He is a great drummer!!
you are lost
Why didn't they talk about his UFO and Schenker time
I guess I missed it. We had a lot to cover in an hour. Thanks for watching and hope you enjoyed it otherwise.
@@livefrommydrumroom Thanks for responding. I did enjoy the interview very much so.
othewise Carmine Appice IS the Heaviest drummer,, John Bonham learned from him
Mike Varney! Sorry
Dude, I cant believe you interviewed the great and humble AD and you didnt even know when he was with Starship and Journey and in what order..thats lame..next time do your homework, thats insulting.
@@dougrobinson4763 Dude, believe it. He’s my friend and we were having a conversation. Next time he’s on my show we’ll give you a shout out. Thanks for watching.
Ewwww the mask comments.
H's great but after a while.....zzzzzzzz. Long solos are boring
Not when Carl Palmer is doing it😮
@@edljnehan2811Even the legendary Gene Krupa once stated, long solos ae boring. Just give them enough and let them crave for more when you stop. again....zzzzzzz
Google California Jam 1 Carl Palmer drum solo on Karn Evil 9 first impression. If you have the least little bit of intelligence about drums or music get back with me and let me know what you think.
@@edljnehan2811 Dipstick? Whatever. I'm the guy who was a student of mass proportions of C. Palmer, M. Giles, B. Buford and B. Cobham, and also the classic jazz giants. Been playing for over 60 years. I only mentioned Krupa because I agree with him. In my most careful thought-out opinion, just from your response alone, i can tell you are a rookie. Does not matter your age or experience, simply a rookie....no more or less. Take a seat.
