- Starting seedlings indoors takes just a few essential elements: the right soil, heat, light and moisture. Greenhouse manager John Lenz shares his methods for nurturing the thousands of plants we grow at Baker Creek each year.
I need a shirt that says “grow em like you love em”
Seriously!!! Baker creek, you guys should put that out! It would sell like crazy!!!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I want to sit with this gentleman and have him mentor me! I felt like I learned so much in such a short time! Thank you!!!
"Grow 'em like you love 'em."
What an incredible gardener/teacher. I could watch is tutorials all day! Thank you for making this video.
Cool tip about the dishsoap and gypsum, especially when you can just mix it together with regular Pro Mix. No need to spend extra money on seed starting mix. Thanks so much!!! Love this channel!!!
I don’t think he said gypsum or dish soap
@@RandomsFandom This information is at the 2 minute mark.
@@RandomsFandom It is definitely in the video, and as onscreen text! Didn't have gypsum, but used some dish soap as I wet my mix... Did wonders! Don't need to make sure all the soap is off my pots now, that's a plus!
Best seed staying video I have found.
Straight forward, no frills, easy explanation. Thank you.
i get your catalog every year. Been planting stuff i buy from you all in upstate NY for the past 5 years. your seeds always work great. thanks keep it up
So many thank yous for the effort and dedication of sustaining life as it should be lived.
Best tips so far on the internet!!
Soil
Moisture - not to drown them.
Heat - 70 degrees
And after germination light
I alao liked the part "fridge top location" for growing seed.
Awesome! Love Baker Creek Rare Seeds and just discovered the youtube ! Thank you so much. John did an awesome job-- very interesting to listen to.
Interesting about the Dawn. I love you guys and your company!
Sarah and Kevin from Living Traditions Homestead sent me. lol We've already made and received one seed order from Baker Creek and right now I'm working on my 'serious' seed list for this winter. I got a late start this year as we were busy setting up our chicken coop!
I buy all my seeds from BC, and it’s the first time I check its channel. Hello!🤪 Great video class on seeding. Thank you.
Helloooooo Baker Creek! Growing some Baker Creek heirloom seeds right now and they are fabulous!!!! Red Wing lettuce is looking great!
Thank you
You refresh my memory and learn some new things to happy growing
Just found your channel and subscribed. First year ordering from Baker Creek.
Y'all are an amazing company I look forward to growing many more years of your seeds!!!
Best seed start video I’ve seen.
Love Baker Creek! Thanks for all your hard work and awesome seeds!
I planted my Baker Creek seeds TODAY!!! 😍
Just want to first say I haven't seen many people with the same last name!! (LENZ)
Thanks for the video...I am getting ready to start my seeds and this was very helpful. Happy Planting ~Shaina~
Just made my spring order. Best seeds. Great plants. I do mostly seed to ground down here in 8A but I’m starting maters and peppers early.
my super hot peppers are from Bakers Creek Got them started already for the summer season. Support these people, and their work. As we've seen with Covid, even seeds are very hard to come by.
I didn’t know about the dawn dishwashing liquid for seed starting! Thank you!
is dawn considered organic growing still? not sure whats in it
I agree. I stopped using Dawn dish soap which has dye in it to make it blue. I can't imagine putting that into my potting soil where I am trying to grow homegrown organic vegetables free from chemicals.
@@garden4life622 You can get it without dye
@@oddopops1327 That has Nothing to do with being Organic which Dawn Dish Soap is NOT.
@@garden4life622 Even w/o dye it's no good. Dawn also contains 1 4-dioxane which is considered a groundwater contaminant. It's safe for washing animals but I don't want to eat it.
Thanks I just got growlight and made a great center with auto fan outlet and plenty of growing space 31.5" height as last season I only had 10" and a late spring set me back.
Got some fine seeds from you folks and they did well every one love the Brad's Atomic grape as first choice.and Terracotta and Brandy wine we simply love.
Believe I also got Honey Gold Hybrid from you folks , Never knew tomatoes are so delicious.
Thanks for the teaching Sir
Love this man. Thank you John Lens.
Thank you for the very useful information. I ordered a few awesome looking bean varieties from you guys. I can't wait to plant them.
Great video guys very informative look forward to visiting you again sometime soon 👍🦇🌻🐓

Sure make it look easy. Great video pal. Thx
That was very interesting cheers for sharing cheers Ray 🥕🌽🌶
Your seedlings are beautiful
Fantastic video. Thanks Baker Creek!!
Great video thanks✌ Love the heirloom seeds!
On top of the refrigerator, freezer, water heater are all great germination places!
Thanks John! Gonna start my melon and pepper seeds in a few weeks 👍🏼❤️
Very thorough and clean cut info 🤙
Great tips. I will apply these to my seed starting this year 💕
New subscriber. Awesome products, thanks for sharing
I have some started at home but need a better light system. Its so much fun to watch them grow
I start seeds in my car.
Acts like a little greenhouse.
I would love one of those hats!!!
Me too!
This was incredibly helpful. Thank you!
What a great video. Solid gold.
Great video guys.
Thank you, this was helpful - love the seeds I've gotten from your company! Would you do a follow up video on when and how to harden off? How do you know when it's time to transplant outside?
We will pass the suggestion on. Most crops will be transplanted about 2 weeks after your last frost date, But it depends on which crop you are growing. Your transplanting time revolves around your frost date and crop type!
The fans in the greenhouse hardens them
@@trishy5626 don't the UV rays of the sun also needs to be adjusted by setting out
and getting sunlight a little at a time I do know about fans to strengthen but I thought both is needed.
About the fan I just built my seed.starting center and install a automatic switch as many uses in the bathroom venting so that should be handy.
Yes, you need to bring them outside into direct sunlight for increasing amounts of time over the course of about a week. Too much direct sun initially will burn the leaves and can kill the seedlings.
Could you list the amounts of seed starting mix, dawn dishwashing liquid.and gypsum. In other words, what is the ratio of theses three items?
Works for kids to "grow'em like you love'em. That'll do it. Janice
Thanks for the information. i will be starting seeds for the first time.
Dawn dish detergent! GREAT TIP!
I love this video. I do LOVE my plants. LOL
Great tips, especially the dishwashing soap😮. I’m starting some of my lovely seeds right now 👩🏾🌾
Great video!
I know I'm late to the party but one thing I've noticed in my noob gardening journey is *not* using seed trays. I bought a bunch of cheap kiddie pools and filled them with soil, punched holes in the bottom as you do. Some came with holes from damage so I got a discount hehe. I ended up using these kiddie pools for my excess seeds that did not go into my seed trays. I planted them all on the same day and the kiddie pool plants grew 2x-3x faster. These were a wide variety of odds and ends like peppers, long beans, eggplant, mini water melon. They also did not suffer from being replanted. I can understand that in some cases you would need seed trays to move things around when you are dealing with thousands of plants but maybe the home gardener does not need this and should always direct sow..?
direct sowing is less time consuming and less work, but starting seeds in trays/container has benefits such as improved germination, being able to plant earlier, survival rate of seedlings, etc.
@@RareSeedsBC Thanks for the reply. That's what I read. I wonder why my directly planted seeds did so well with the same soil and light.
@@pineappleparty1624 Perhaps the seeds had more access to nutrients than seeds in trays? Interesting that you had good success with the kiddie pool. I will try something a bit smaller next year and see how the seedlings grow. Cheers.
@@thisorthat7626 It seemed at the first hint of the roots running out of space they stunted a little bit. While the others just kept growing at neck break speed lol.
Love that! “Grow m like you love m.”
Love ya Baker Creek!!!!
Great tips 👍 Thanks BC 🙌
Great video ☺️👌
Lots of growing ideas. I will be back.
I love Baker creek
I'm so excited about the Dawn trick!
Thank you for sharing ❤️💗❤️
I noticed some commercial farmers put perlite over the top of their seeds
From my understanding that's to make sure they don't grow mold or algae, just to soak up any extra moisture. :) Hope that helped.
I got my Baker Creek seeds a week ago. Just curious, how long do you leave them on the seed matt?
until sprouting begins, then you want to remove bottom heat as it can damage roots!
Electric blanket works great.
Good pointers! Thanks for the info.
Love Baker Creek!!!
Hey Mr. Lenz! We could be family. We are the Lenz family too!
Love the tip about the dawn dish soap, you mentioned how much Dawn, but I don't think you mentioned how much soil?
we use about 100 liters of soil at a time!
Nice video
Great info! Thank you
Lots of good info! At some point will ya'll switch to coco coir for sustainability?
Rose A I just am using it the first time. I love this option! Adding it to all my raised beds! I’m telling everyone about it too!
we definitely want to!
Thank you! See ya!
Good video 👍
So you make your own potting mix with peat and perlite? What proportions do you use? Then you add some gypsum and a squirt of Dawn dish soap?
we us pro-mix, which already has the peat, vermiculite and perlite mixed, then we add gypsum and a few drops of soap!
Should you take your seedlings off heat mat after they sprout? I have read you should and read you should leave them on!
yes you should take them off as soon as they begin to sprout, bottom heat can damage roots!
Hi Baker Creek! I just got my seeds from you guys today and I'm so excited to start growing this year. I hope you can answer my question. I see your grow lights are a few feet above the seedlings...I thought that would cause legginess. Can you tell when it's okay to have lights that far above the seedlings? :)
If they start getting leggy, you can definitely bring the lights closer. Just avoid touching the lights as the bulbs can scorch the plants.
I noticed you don't use humidity domes, should I use them for seed starting at home?
They're not required, but if you notice that the seedlings are having a tough time shedding their seed coats, a humidity dome can help.
What soil or mix would you recommend for "potting up" to a larger size if it's not yet time (too cold outside) to transplant directly into the garden and what will the plants need for nutrition during that stage of growth?
normal potting soil you can get from a store will have about 30 days of nutrition in it and will work fine i also use a little bit of compost in the mix because they are still small they dont need a lot i just potting up my summer squash to 1 gallon pots and they will stay their for atlease a month and i will give them some 4-5-5 or some type of basic ( nutes) until i feel like the last frost is gone for me it is in april some time
As daniel said, potting soil with some compost works well! You can also use fish emulsion to liquid feed!
Thank you both for your replies. Very helpful. I appreciate it!
We want brand names you're using.
Thank you for the tips!
Keep on growing!
Sandra Johnson Promix is a brand of soil. Lowe’s or HD usually carry it
I'm fascinated by the dawn dish soap...do you put it before or after water when mixing the dirt? Would make a good video.
Just squirt the soap over the soil a bit, add some water and stir well.
I’m little confused on dish soap so pls clarify. Do you add to the dry medium and how much? You stated dawn soap but can it be any dish soap?
a couple teaspoons are added, the soap helps to both kill and repel bugs!
Never would have thought about the Dawn dish soap. He said a squirt in the mix... how much mix was in there for that squirt?
Stephen O'Sullivan, we use 1 oz. of Dawn and one pound of gypsum per cubic foot of Pro Mix.
@@RareSeedsBC Thank you
Dawn contains 1 4-dioxane which is considered a groundwater contaminant.
@@johnchase4408 um, ok.....
Great video, do you cover the trays after you seed them?
Not typically, it stays fairly humid in the greenhouses.
May I ask a sunny enclosed porch? What temperature do seeds need to germinate and is that for all seeds?
different seeds require different temperatures, but having a temp of around 70F - 80F should be good for most commonly planted garden seeds, and yes a sunny porch should work well, however you want direct sunlight for atleast 12 hours per day, if not, you my need to add some supplemental lighting
Awesome thanks
Do you soak seeds in water with a few minerals overnight?
What about the pot you germinate the seed in being too small for the young plant? I often see roots of a transplant in a ball at the bottom.
We dont presoak most of our seeds. but it can help if you would like to! If you plant into seed cells, and the seedlings begin to become rootbound before you are ready to plant, then you will need to transplant to a bigger pot!
Is the gypsum to provide nutrients only? Do you use anything organic fertilizer prior to transplanting?
We sometimes fertilize with fish emulsion! and yes the gypsum is for nutrition!
Do you fertilize the seedlings? At what point do you start fertilizing? Or is the gypsum all you need until the seedlings are planted outside?
Thanks in advance! 😀
May I ask which pro mix you use? I have a bale of pro mix premium potting mix.
Home gardener here and customer with large vegetable garden. I'm considering switching over to soil blocks, since affordable seed cell units are very flimsy, and only last a couple of years at best with careful handling. I noticed you don't use soil blocks. Is it ease of operation and handling, or something about how well the seedlings perform in cells vs blocks?
We like the ease of handling the seed cell trays since we produce so very many seedlings in our greenhouses.
@@RareSeedsBC Since I'm still on the fence of whether to go plug trays or soil blocks, can I ask what sort of plug trays you use? Are they use-once-and-toss, or do you clean and reuse year after year? If you reuse them, what qualities should I be looking for so I can narrow down my google search?
Epic Gardening has seed cells that are not flimsy.
Do you keep the lights at the same height? They shouldn't be lowered?
We use our grow lights as supplemental lighting, so it does not need to be as close as if it was the only light source!
What heating mat brand are you using?
What do you mean you used on soap. You mix it with the soil and what's the quantity of both? Nice Greenhouse
The soap just acts as a surfactant to help maintain the moisture in the soil. There's no exact measurement. We just use a good squirt per wheelbarrow full of dirt.
Do you mix the dawn in the water?
@@pattybowden506 I do believe so, he said to just squirt it into the soil mixture in wheelbarrow, it is a good idea
Also, I used your soil mix recipe, Promix, gypsum and dawn. I found it to be dry and not evenly moist. What did I do wrong their also?
Did you ensure to mix thoroughly? and it is best watered atleast once a day, twice when very hot, especially in small seed trays or pots
Perfect!!!
Great tutorial! 👍 I tried to hit the like button snd it wouldn't work.
Do you moisten the Promix before adding the gypsum and Dawn?
no we moisten after, they all mix together more readily when dry!
what about older seeds? any advice there? I actually have quite a few baker creek packets I found, 10-20 years old.
with older seeds, you may do best using the paper towel method!
I need details about adding Dawn to soil please. Can it be added to established gardens? Is it biodegradable? Toxic? Can It be added to watering regimens? How much can be used?
I wouldn't add it to your garden soil. We just use the soap as a surfactant to keep the moisture even in the tiny seed staring cells. It's not necessary for germination, but it sure helps the soil from drying too much in our greenhouses when we have thousands of seedlings to care for at any given time.
@@RareSeedsBC about what is the ratio? I’m prepping my seed starting mix for the New Years.
*Could you tell what is the lumens for those lights you use for seedings and what the Kelvin rating might be, or does that even matter to get the results you guys do? I order a ton of seeds from you guys. Best quality seeds in the biz and high germination. Thanks in advance!*
They are full spectrum LED's. Most are around 300 Watts. But we dont know the lumens on them. And as a full spectrum LED there are number of different Bulbs with different temperature colors (kelvin rating).
Where do you buy them?
I found the answer later down the comment chain.
They look like scamazon lights where they lie about the output and the spectrum also when the fans stop the leds burn out.
