What's funny about Sakuragi is that he confidently states he's a "basketball genius" from day 1 (regardless he's never played basketball before), and as the story progresses, he ACTUALLY shows he has hidden talent for the sport. Which makes him even cockier! 😄

As a kid born in the 80s, this is one of the most popular sport manga/anime show at time. The animation, soundtrack, story, drama were all top notch. A lot of kids pickup the sports of basketball just because of this series.

Wow, this is an awesome review. You're a real one for watching the anime with fresh eyes after watching the recent movie. You really covered the heart behind the games and the characters. You really understood what made this show so special and how it impacted the generations ahead. (Also, not many people have the sensibilities of the time period and understanding of broadcasting/production issues that were rampant in many shows as you do, so thank you for touching on it.)

@@MintVolcano I really enjoy your review Sir! If you have the time to read the manga too you will be given more insight of the overall SLAM DUNK story...
      (SPOILER ALERT)
      1. In the show Sakuragi motivation to join the basketball club because he want to get Haruko attention, but eventually after he spend time along with the team, he admitted that he actually loves the basketball game and really want to be a true basketball player.
      2. When sakuragi dive for the lose ball he actually broke his backbone and sadly after the game vs Sannoh he cannot play basketball anymore, because of his injury... But, in the end actually he become the sohoku basketball team advisor beside anzai sensei coach.
Thank you for your video! Keep up the good work and May the God keep you healthy and happy in this life 😁

Great review. I said this in your movie review but you should really read the comic book. I know it's not easy to find them in the U.S. but I really hope you do. It contains all the animated series and the movie. Tone of art itself progresses as the author really gets into the story and Sakurigi takes the game more seriously. Play by play is awesome. I have complete 30 some comicbook when I was young and I read it over and over again. I can go on forever but I'll stop here. Hope your channel grow so everyone can see your review.

Slam Dunk is definitely one of the best shonnen story, even today so something as good would be difficult to find. Maybe try Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood. Its also multiawarded in Japan and it already ended. Plus there is an important meme about it if you will be starting to venture into anime stuffs. LOL. There is an older version but that one was showed when the manga wasn't over yet so its latter episodes are not cannon. Its also great but I recomment the new one because it has a proper ending.

I'm from Chile and they showed this when I was a teenager and it hit me deeply possibly because I was the right age for it. Possibly my favourite anime series of all time, loved how fleshed out all the characters are. Even the opposing teams get solid background and moments in the series, which just makes viewers care more about the stakes and outcomes of the show. Last but not least, the bumbling talented character of Sakuragi is just endearing and funny, you want to root for him despite his stupidity, he is a great main character.

Great review, glad you actually took the time and went back to the OG slam dunk anime, it's quite a long series. Episodic recap at the beginning of every ep was a thing because of the weekly airing schedule, or even preview, so that is strange for binge streaming since it spoils what comes next.
Exactly, to us fans who grew up reading and watching this during our teens in early to mid 90s (i was 12 to 13), it was immense and legendary (the other 2 pillars at the time was yu yu hakusho and dragon ball). We all fell in love with haurko or ayako and wanted to be cool like Rukawa lol. Delinquent student culture (like biker gangs) were just portrayed so cooly in the 80 and 90s anime, manga, or drama around that time. Not to mention Jordan and the Bulls were huge and Inoue was a big fan.
That's why it's a pity. As much as as many fans and I love the latest movie finally bringing the long awaited Sannoh game to life, it lacked a few things. First 3D (even though done well) instead of traditionally stylish handdrawn, new cast replacing the familiar andiconic cast (most of whom are still active today), and no original soundtrack or nostalgic theme songs, which topped the 90s jpop charts beyond anime even among non anime viewers. Imagine if this movie was actually done with old music and cast, would've been even more emotional and old fans would lose it.

      @aoshi000 Год назад +1

@MintVolcano yeah that's the golden period of Jump and our childhood. It's so strange those characters were all older than me at the time and I worshipped them. I wanted to be Rukawa but was more like Kogure lol. I noticed someone recommended steinsgate anime. That's indeed a great time traveling story, if not one of the best :) definitely a must watch.
But man, slam dunk is one of the best sports anime or just anime in general. The basketball matches got our blood boiled, filled with memorable characters, and taught us many valuable life lessons to work hard and persevere. You just don't get tight groups like shohoku or Yusuke and gang anymore.

i loved the show but the manga its based on is considerably stronger, especially in the last part. if you aren't a big manga reader start at chapter 198 (this is the point the tv anime ended right before the inter-high) and you'll blaze through it. the movie condenced the final game immensely for obvious reasons that the movie cannot fit all the content in 2 hours especially considering the entire miyagi backstory was entirely new content and was like half of it. and it skipped the game before sannoh entirely. you will be shocked how the medium of a "comic book" can portray a basketball game so well. it's also by that stage you could see the author evolve to a more serious tone. which he would continue in his later works. again, i can not advise enough to anyone, either read the manga start to finish, or if you've seen the anime and are not big on comics/manga, start at chapter 198, it's so immersive you'll finish it in no-time and imo even with the movie out, is still the ultimate way because everything but the ryota part is more fleshed out

I am probably so late for recommending an anime, but please watch mob psycho 100.
It’s one of the best animes ever, and if you get attached to the characters in the slam duck anime, you are definitely gonna love mob psycho’s characters.
Mob psycho have a lot of similar ideas to explore about life and friendship, but it is shown in a new and fresh perspective, and in a modern age.
And one of the special things about mob psycho is that the original manga have a unique and not perfect style of drawing, but its story really effected the anime staff, and you can see that on how they adapted the anime. They took the animation and the coloring to another level, just to be as faithful to the manga because of how they believed in the story that was told. So, my point is that the anime has a lot of creative and fresh ideas that the production team uses to create even a better experience for people who is watching.
And on a final note, it is a short anime that have 3 seasons, and each season is about 13 episodes. And the story actually raps up in a good way and time. It ends in a good time, without being long while making sure to ties all the story points together.
Please watch mob psycho 100, I will be wating for your review.

You know what's the saddest part about this anime ?
It's the fact that it was based on the real story of a Japanese highschool student named Hanamichi sakuragi who was a tall strong trouble maker who joined the basketball team after he was approached by the coach and was named ( the Japanese hope of basketball) because he was naturally great at it
Unfortunately he died at the age of 18 in a car accident when he was on his way to see his father who was sick at that time

There are channels who basically react to a batch of two or three episodes showing the actual episodes but they mask the videos so they can avoid copyright strikes, but it can be a huge hassle. It's not just Hanamichi whose affection is misplaced and is near impossible to be assigned to someone else, it's Haruko's too. In fact, one could argue that she's even more deluded than Hanamichi.
