Speaking of heaters… if I have an extra heater made for my 55 gallon, could I use that heater effectively on a 10 or 20 gallon tank? Or would it create too rapid or severe temperature swings?
Great video & as a safety measure I started painting all my plugs on my power cords w/Sharpie paint ( oil based ) white paint BOLD POINT pens🖍️. I bought it @ Home Depot . Ever since I have not had any issues grabbing the wrong cord 🚫 🔥 🚒 🥵 👩🚒 but I sure have had my fair share of them before . ❤️
Travis I am a new fancy oranda hobbyist. I have a 46 gallon tank. I have heater set at 72 and the tank thermometer says the water is 78..do need to drop the heater even lower than what it's set at? Also, is it.ok to put mopani driftwood wood the tank? And how long can I leave it in the tank? I currently have live plants in there a a couple of terracotta pots in there and black gravel. Aggie
I bought a temperature controller specifically because I heard about runaway heaters. It is supposed to cut the power to the heater if it raises the temperature past a specified point.
honestly you might be reading the infrared from the coil BEHIND the clear glass. You should put it in water and test the water that's next to it IMO. Or, wrap it in aluminum foil so the reading is coming from the surface of the heater (as the heat passes through the foil).
I like your train of thought, however infrared thermometers Do not "see through" glass, liquids or other transparent surfaces - even though visible light (like a laser) passes through them (i.e. if you point an IR gun at a window, you'll be measuring the temperature of the window pane, not the outside temp)
"Best" is a very arguable term, for me best is a heater that works well that you can afford to replace or have extras on hand if needed, i like the CNZ heaters on amazon, theyre cheap and work very well in my experience

I just had my first shock in my entire life of fishkeeping. About 40 years. My aquaeon heater had split open. I think water got inside. From now on I will absolutely turn off power before I ever touch water.
I have a question why would all my fancy tail goldfish be gasping at the top of the tank I've done everything that you can possibly think all the perimeters are normal I don't know what else to do so I'm looking for maybe some input so if you have any input to check for I greatly appreciate it thank you
@@TrafishAquatics I have a bubble wall air sponge air stone so I don't know what else could we put in there there's still gasping at the top I have to hang in the back filtration that are larger than the normal tanks so I don't get it I've been doing this for years and the first time I've ever seen this that's why I asked if maybe you any input on said issue of them gasping at the top I don't get it can't put any more air in there I'll be pinning them to the wall
Do they seem to be struggling otherwise, have you checked your waters parameters, if everything is ok otherwise they are known to do this because they are looking for food as they are foragers
Pretty much every heater will have some kind of flaw, any electronic that cycles on and off has a base number of on/off cycles it will complete in its life, some fail sooner and some last longer, now add submersion and it's a whole new ball game lol
There's a lot of variables that come into that, heater size versus tank size is the biggest one, This 300 w heater in a 55 gallon tank heated it up to 96.
Sorry to hear, I highly recommend temperature controllers, even if the heater goes into runaway mode the controller will still make the heater work as designed, so it saves your fish and extends the heaters life too
For sure, underwater they still get about 180-200° But the water passing by it is what's able to cool it. It's just kind of hard to get temperature readings while it's underwater 😆

Doesn't it feel good to prove someone wrong when they are so obnoxious?!??!?! I don't care what he degree he has, I have seen first hand that heaters can and WILL explode when you forget to unplug them during water changes. I've also had fish burned by them. I only buy heaters with guards on them now.

As long as the thermostat is im good working comdition and cycles the heater on and off properly it will be fine

How do you transport fish if your moving to another state?
I use a cooler or bucket with a battery powered air stone, if you need a heater you can get a 12v power inverter to run the heater
I love most of Marineland products but the heaters suck.i all ways have trouble with them and even topfin heaters too.

My tank water reached 120f cooked my fish.. Ever since that I use a separate temp controller...

Water starts boiling at 200°! I could run a distillation with that heater lol
It works a little different underwater,you should have done that first, but it can definitely burn you underwater also
