This was one of the most pleasant videos I've seen. The narration over a relaxing bike ride was satisfying not to mention very informative. Good video, sir. The threat of sinkholes is more serious than people realize.

Just saw this video, and I know my comment is late but....The Florida aquafer took hundreds of thousands of years to create. Most of it was created during the Ice Age when sea level was much lower. At this time most fresh water was seeping its way through the underling limestone bedrock creating caverns that were not under pressure. this is why in many Florida caverns there are features such as stalagmites and stalactite's still there today even though they are filled completely with water under pressure. Limestone, although porous and somewhat soft, is very much like concrete in strength. However, The water under pressure will carry abrasives that will over time where down the cavern walls including the ceiling eventually allowing a collapse. It is a form of erosion that has been going on sense the beginning of time. In South America they call them Cenote. These are natural occurring events most of the time. Many of these disasters of people building in the wrong spot could be avoided by simply using ground penetrating radar before they build.

I hear that developers, real estate agents and the state government are all aware of these issues and build and sell these houses anyway. Unreal!!!

I used to live in New Port Richey (Now Known as the Trinity area) in the 1980's. We had our own well water. The well drilling company thought we would never have a water supply problem since they struck an underground river. Well, I heard from the folks that bought our custom built house on about 1.5 acres, that the well did go dry. I was told by researchers from U of S FL that Pasco County, where we lived, is prone to sinkholes due to Pinellas county pumping all their water from Pasco, thus drying up our aquifer. They started this back when Pasco was not populated much. Now, over the years, Pasco has grown and they pump lots of water too, and now they have a whole lot more sinkholes. Plus, I agree, Citrus and strawberry farming does take a lot of water, but nothing like 2 counties pumping from one county to supply the masses of residents!

I really enjoyed riding around with you and your insightful comments about the area where you live. Thank you. We don't have sinkholes here in Hawaii, but I live on the side of a volcano (Hualalai - now dormant) but we have a HUGE lava flow going on with Kilauea, a hundred so miles from here. Thanks again, it was a wild ride. I have never been on a motorcycle, but you handled it wonderfully!

Thanks for this info. Question, so those houses that are around that sinkhole that you showed us, if they were not required to have the expensive sinkhole insurance before the sinkhole opened up there, would they now be required?
How does that work? Once a sinkhole occurs, is there like a radius of homes around it now must get sinkhole insurance?
    Thanks again.

While the farmers are possibly linked same as any other action that draws water. The land itself is unstable and should never have been built on in the first place.
The only reason there are building in such an area is money, same as building on flood plains.
You know rivers are going to rise in the spring, and you know they are going to flood the area why build there , money.
Such areas should not be allowed for construction of homes or buildings of any kind.

🌿Sinkholes are taking place everywhere in the world; due to various reasons and different geological structure.
But as you stated, it occurs more frequently in Florida.🌴
    No bedrock. No build. Duh?!
Try telling this to the $ hungry.
    Their ears close up.🌴

God- girl, I live in a medium size coastal town in northeast Florida. The area is growing at an obscene rate with no regard for the impact on the infrastructure or environment. People are building massive homes right on the ocean. When I first moved here 45 years ago people only build tiny wooden frame beach cottages on the ocean because they knew eventually they would get knocked over by a hurricane or a northeaster.

So I'm new to Florida, but do any one know about Wildwood? I just bought a home there. We're coming from California. we've had our home inspected already for sinkholes. I had no idea what that was, wondering if we've made a mistake lol.

Good luck florida is swamp land these builders keep changing the land for homes condo's golf courses and banks. This beautiful place will be under water very soon. Hurricane's flooding season rainy days 6-10 weeks straight. It's causes floods. Which makes the ground very soft and guess what happens. Wells overflow under ground and them the floor gives way.. sinkholes more today in 2018 then ever.

I grew up in Tampa 1970s and we had sinkholes back then, so it is not a new problem. More underground water exits Florida thru Apalachee Bay than is used by people. The Everglades is a different problem altogether.

See... The only problem with your theory is that in a LOT of the videos of these sinkholes that I've seen. They're completely filled with water... Not all of them. But a lot of them... So maybe the farming is part of the problem. But I don't think it's all of it. Also. That one you were talking about that swallowed up those trees and all in that swamp was in Louisiana and was caused by a salt mining company that improperly mined a salt deposit.

We have the same type of insurance situation here in Ca. because of all the wild fires. People who've had the same fire insurance for 30 years were just up and dropped. Some places in more rural areas simply can't find anyone to insure their home. All our premiums skyrocketed. Its ridiculous and nobody can afford fire insurance even if they can get it.

Just came across your video. I hope that your current opinion is not the same today as it was then. Because you are so busy blaming citrus and strawberry farmers, who only utilize the extra water during a very rare Florida freeze, while ignoring the fact that in the midst of a watering shortage the okay was given for a water bottling company to be created to send millions of gallons of water around the world. Who is going to take more water from the aquifer, the farmers who water around the clock for a few days, or the new water bottling company who has permission to pump water every day of the year.

    • @ricknelsonm
      @ricknelsonm 5 лет назад +2

Tim De, The farmers are to blame, and if the bottling company you speak of is stealing large loads of water, then both the farmers and the bottling company's are to blame and the asswipe government whom is allowing it!!!!!

"Farming"? Naw, I believe it's people! The USA (Mostly Florida) keep letting MF*ERS over here which is causing way too much construction and over population. It sounds crazy, but I feel right above Lake Okeechobee there will be a major sinkhole that will connect to Okeechobee causing the lower part of Florida to literally break away/ sink in. All this weight is causing a pressure build up in the center while pulling the points down. Think of it as a peace of plywood hanging off the edge of a sidewalk with the edge that's hanging over having more and more weight applied. Eventually it will snap in the middle, some what like the Titanic ship did. I call it the Titanic affect.
    Update:
Now that I think about it the depleting aquifer could be a contributing factor coming from farming.

Really! That's BS as Pasco and Hernando counties are inundated with Sinkholes! Pasco Aquafiries are used by Pineallis and Hillsboro counties as their main water supplier. Zephyrhills gets their bottle water from Pasco springs, and Coke a cola! It has been know since the early 1800 that Florida has sink holes. The Cities and counties are well aware of the sinkhole problem, but decided to let contractors build anyway. Lets let the Home owners worry about the sink holes!
