  • In this lesson, Stephen Bauman shows a technique called mass drawing, a quick way to create a portrait by focusing on large value shapes instead of lines. He starts with rough shadow shapes and uses measurements and triangulation for accuracy. Think of your pencil like a paintbrush, focusing on where values meet. This method needs good contrast in your source image and works best with soft graphite pencils. With practice, mass drawing can speed up your block-in process and improve your portrait skills.

    I think what I love most about this video is that the Stephen Bauman is producing quality work that does not exactly recreate the reference image. It comforts me because it tells me that I don't need to be perfect to be competent.

    I love the approach to drawing in this video! When I started taking art education more seriously, I struggled with the linear, form-construction approach, especially with portraits. Despite that difficulty and the poor results I produced when trying to practice that method, I was still able to produce more faithful drawings in my leisure time by recreating just the shapes I was more attuned to seeing.
    This video does a good job of articulating how my mind/eyes perceived the world and offers really good insights on how I can take that to the next level. I am saving to hopefully get the longer course soon.

    I've always done the point of truth technique and didn't realize it had a name. When I was a little kid I'd always draw some feature and base the scale and position of everything else off of it. They actually discourage you from doing this in traditional art classes. Kinda goes to show you, you have to go out and develop your skills on your own at a certain point.

    • @ProkoTV
      @ProkoTV  17 дней назад +3

      Every teacher and even school will have a different way that they prefer and teach. It's an important thing to consider when choosing a who you're going to be taught by.
      This method is also taught in traditional art classes but it sounds like your teacher preferred something else. Nothing wrong with that! There are a million ways to do the same thing and some will strike your brain better than others.

      @@ProkoTV Yeah it's unfortunate they don't always tailor it to what's intuitive to the person they're teaching. As you say, every student is going to be different also.

    making portraits from photo's I have no problem doing loosely & quickly by hand and still have it resemble the original. However, for some reason, no matter how hard I try, how drawn out, focused and meticulously I work, I always fail to draw a looking-like-the-original-person portrait from a real life model, regardless how still they sit :/

    when saying “measuring the source image” are you looking at the reference printed off side by side with the scale being the same?

    • @ProkoTV
      @ProkoTV  17 дней назад +1

      It won't necessarily be viewed at the same scale that he's drawing at. But he'll look to a reference to the side of the drawing, printed or on an ipad, and check the relative measurements within the reference to check against his drawing.

    I extremely dislike working that much with graphite, too messy and feels weird on my skin…just hate it. It’s a necessary evil for cartooning and comics but I’ll never stray from clear line drawing simply due to my aversion to brake pad dust.
