    I have a lovely uncommon mother. She is an American, northeast upbringing but very honest about relationships. She told me, as I was starting to date, to be very careful when committing to a man; learn about his family, his religion et al. She was very honest and told me many cultures treat women as property but they will draw you in with short term love-bombing (she gave diff phrase). I am so grateful for her honesty with me. She and my dad saved me from so many mistakes, just by having their words in my head.

    Jasmine you are so right. I was friendly with an Arab young man who worked in a deli. He told me that his goal was to join a jihad to get Spain back. How it had been unfairly taken from the Arab people. It was so unbelievable how in furiated he was and his temper grew as he talked. I couldn’t wait to leave. I stopped using that deli.

    Because hospitality is so common and taken seriously, I think Americans aren't used to this and confuse it with love and respect for them. Every time I see a traveler on social media bragging about the hospitality they got, making the news liars about everything, i cringe. This hospitality is part of culture and socially mandatory, nothing more.

    Wow I loved this! Thank you so much! The name Karen actually means “ray of light” so this Karen really is living up to her name by strongly speaking the truth and telling her objective story. And it’s so interesting hearing this description of Egyptian and Arab men. It’s something that I’ve seen and experienced amongst some Sephardic Israeli communities. The amazing difference is Islam. Now that the Sephardic Jewish communities are out of the Arab world they’re allowed to evolve. My Ashkenazi cousin married a Moroccan Sephardic woman. Her mother taught all of her 5 children, boys and girls, to only marry Ashkenazi and taught her boys to not behave as the Arab men before them. My close Sephardi friends from Morocco, Egypt, Iranian etc descents all talk about how their parents taught them to be strong women and gentle and giving men. It’s amazing how quickly the culture is allowed to shift and grow. And it’s heart breaking how many people are suffering under Islam created ideology.

      Liberal westerners spout this "accepting, honoring" spiel, but when they are applying it to a culture that sees the opposite as the desired stance, it does NOT make them appear "virtuous" or "tolerant", but instead the liberals appear weak and gullible. It is a total delusion (and very much like those same people judge people in a society 100 years ago, by the mores of today, as if that has ANY validity. Kind of like seeing ridiculous people protesting with signs saying "Queers for Palestine", totally clueless that if they actually went there and made it known that they were homosexual, they would be literally put to death. Current Egyptians are Arabs. The original Egyptians are the remnants of the Coptic Christians in Egypt.

    • @Vexx_Line_
      @Vexx_Line_ 2 месяца назад +10

      Egyptians were never Arabic.
      Prior to the Islamic Arabic conquest, Egypt was a predominantly Christian country, with a significant majority of the population identifying as Christian. The Coptic Christians, who are the remnants of the original Egyptian population, made up a majority of the population.
      Christians: The majority of the population, with estimates suggesting upward of around 95% of Egyptians identified as Christian.
      Pagans: Although Christianity was the dominant religion, paganism continued to exist in some form, with some estimates suggesting around 1-5% of the population practiced paganism.
      Jews: A small Jewish population existed in Egypt, with estimates suggesting around 1-3% of the population identified as Jewish.
      The Islamic Arabic conquest had a profound impact on the demographics of Egypt. The conquest led to a significant shift in the population's religious identity, with many Egyptians converting to Islam by force over time.
      This process was facilitated by the jizya tax, which was imposed on non-Muslims; making it impossible to continue living in Egypt unless the inhabitants converted to Islam. Waves of Christians & non-Muslims were forced to flee the country, or face increased Jizya tax or harsh punishment.
      Today, the Coptic Christians make up only around 10-15% of Egypt's total population.
      The conquest also led to the Arabisation of the Egyptian population, with Arabic becoming the dominant language and culture by around the 16th-17th Century. This process was facilitated by the influx of Arab settlers and with that, the adoption of Arabic as the language of government and commerce which differed significantly from the Christians'.
      Overall, the Islamic Arabic conquest had a profound impact on the demographics of Egypt, leading to a significant shift in the population's religious identity, customs, traditions, commerce & governance, and the continuing Arabization of the country which has led to much controversy, contention & suffering throughout the past continuing to current day.
      The Coptic Christian community, other Christian communities such as Greek Orthodox, Roman & Byzantine Catholic Church in Egypt & other non-Muslim communities resisted & continue to resist the Arabisation and Islamicisation of Egypt. They continue the fight to practice their faith, traditions & customs despite harsh persecution and discrimination.

A friend of mine married an Egyptian. They had a son. When he decided to take their son to the country to meet his family, she conceded but refused to go. It's fascinating how the allure of ancient places can really attract open minded people, those who like to travel & get into adventures, those who love exploring what's left of the world's antiquities, but don't look into how that area may have changed over time; in Egypt, the change was devastating & drastic.
      It's really sad since not too long ago Egypt & many other countries in that area were wonderful to visit.

    Sorry but I found it a bit odd that the guest referred to "all these women" when she herself is one of them. Marrying someone as a second wife who already has four young kids-what was she thinking? Then, to judge other women by asking, "How can they do that knowing everything?" felt hypocritical. Much of what Karen said came across as privileged and a bit out of touch, particularly the part about needing to "be strict with them." That only seemed to work because she’s an American citizen. I was glad Yasmine was able to push back on some of those points.

    • @sleether4049

      @@sleether4049 Well, I have never been in a relationship with a married man, as I believe it is morally wrong-particularly if one has a privilege of being a Western woman/a woman from the West. So I do think Karen's 'marrying' a man who already has a wife was morally wrong. However, I empathise with women in other parts of the world who do not have the privilege of this choice. In many countries where polygamy is legal, women are often treated as second-class citizens and conditioned to accept this status, a reality powerfully illustrated in Yasmine’s book. Given this context, I do not think it is fair for Karen, a Western woman, to pass judgment on "all these women" as she did.

      What wasn’t said is that the majority of people living in non-oil rich countries are poor. And getting poorer every day. In Egypt the elites control the government, military and most big businesses. The money doesn’t trickle down to the masses, even worse in small towns and villages. This is often where the agriculture is the main occupation. Their agricultural methods lack modern equipment etc. this doesn’t help the mentality for change. Egyptians also thrive on conspiracy theories. Critical thinking is not taught. Neither is long term planning.

    Yhis week in new ross, wexford, ireland, an 8 year old girl was killed in her house trying to protect her mother who was being stabbed. The child was stabbed and died. The investigation is ongoing so it's all 'alleged' but the mother was an irish convert to islam, the male involved was ' middle eastern' , 'kuwaiti' (depends on source), he tried to kill himself after and both him and the mother are still in hospital.
    Kids aren't stabbed often here so it's a real shock for people.

      Yes and it's so annoying that men who dress as women want to use women's spaces and compete against women in sports. They want all the advantages of being a woman without any of the disadvantages. How long did women have to fight for what we have in the West and these men walz in expecting women to give way to them?

    For a contract to be applicable in Egypt it would have to be written according to the laws of the land, did your daughter study Egyptian law to be able to write this contract you speak of? An American contract and an Egyptian contract are extremely different.

    So, just as a side-note, I'm curious about the comment you make, Karen, that "It would be better if someone from Luxor was teaching those little Egyptian girls boxing, than you, as a westerner., but there was no one there to do it." My question is "Why?" Why do you think you need to justify teaching them by adding that disclaimer? Why would that somehow be better? And, if you teach little girls there, doesn't that make it possible that then one of them would go on in years to come, to continue teaching little girls there? I just don't get the liberal POV that sharing knowledge with others is somehow superior if it comes from someone that "looks like them" or is the same nationality, or gender or whatever.
    That aside, the video and the story are fascinating. And I love the addition of Yasmine's POV and comments to Karen's. Just an excellent show.

      @hpyrkh3 But this about is today's Islam which has taken over all the area and is also taking over the West. The distant history of Egypt is less relevant. If you go that far back Judaism was hardly a bed of roses for women. Women were property in most societies until recent times.

    • @hpyrkh3
      @hpyrkh3 2 месяца назад +2

      @ I’m not arguing what you are saying, I just have a suspicion that that part of the world didn’t see enlightenment ever.
      Btw, all things are relative. Compared to now, Jewish women of ancient times and medieval times were oppressed. But, compared to Christianity and Islam and many other civilizations, Judaism was like feminism for women. I have very specific examples why I’m saying this.

    • @liannebenn2097
      @liannebenn2097 2 месяца назад

      @hpyrkh3 Everything is relative but as a woman I still wouldn't wish to live by the rules of any super religious group. Men always add rules to keep women in 'their place'. Islam at its most basic is super controlling and women lose their voices and what we would consider basic rights. It is inhumane at its core by Western standards.

    FYI. Women's boxing is only exercise. Lemon please understand this if you're going to take a martial art it pretty much has to be Jiu-Jitsu all the other ones are for exercise and maybe defend against other women and small sickly men but a regular healthy Man a striking defense is not going to really work. A weapon God especially is really the best..... I'm sure women can do a lot of things that men can do but please believe there is a difference in physical strength.

I know it sounds harsh but that is the same reason why America is losing wars all of these hearts and minds and feel sorry for people who go against the grain because they feel this and believe that and then it's up to us to Care is kind of hard yes we can still care about them but 0 we also have to educate them I just don't understand them marrying these dudes from those countries and definitely not following them over there

      That wasn’t a respectful comment. I may sound arrogant but I know more about Egypt than Karen and Jasmine. 40 years and marrying/ divorcing an Egyptian man. I saw and endured lots of disgusting things. I’m still in touch with my ex and relatives and friends there. Karen is obsessed with Sharia law in Egypt which does NOT control all aspects of law. Every Moslem country picks snd chooses what aspects and degree Sharia is used. In most cases it’s family law - marriage, divorce, inheritance, children, etc. I survived living in Egypt. I’m 76 and well educated. And no I’m it looking for a medal. Egyptian society is very strained with very low wages and very high cost of living. Worse than ever. Egyptians are famous for not leaving much on the table when negotiating. They’ve never learned win-win. I suggest you educate yourself more on the Middle East.

      All Shariah is dangerous since it's only a stay to incrementally introduce more & it could change in an instant.
      That's great you were able to pull off what you did. However, no one gets to choose where they're born, thus millions of girls & women ARE subject to those higher levels of Shsriah.
      Your lived experiences are your own, others have their story, their lived experiences to tell.

      How exactly is one woman supposed to change the beliefs of an entire population? Do you think she has the resources to purchase them their own private island or something? She did what she could, when she could by setting up a program to help the girls empower themselves by learning to box & helping her friend Gita.
      If you want to help start up your own show, publish your own news letter or article, educate yourself & debate, start your own charity or work with other efforts geared toward women.

      I’ve lived in Egypt, married an Egyptian. And Egypt and the Middle East has been in my life for 40 years. As a foreigner especially living in smaller towns and dealing with village mindsets should be very careful trying to introduce change . The females in my Egyptian family were all cut and their grandmother was married at age 13. It was my role to question their decisions. I didn’t want yo cause problems. I saw lots of ugly things there. My younger sister in law couldn’t get pregnant so her first two husbands divorced here and put her clothes and furniture out on the street to come get. Luckily she married another man who had a child from a previous married. He didn’t want more children and I don’t think he supported the child he had.

      ??? I looked up Sharush law by country. Egypt applies z Sharush law for some aspects of law especially family matters. Like marriage, divorce, polygamy, inheritance. Etc. Unless you’re a female from an upper class family and you have a tight marriage contract , a women who is divorced gets virtually nothing from the divorce. He keeps the home while she provided all the furniture which is now wrecked because it’s poorly made. Plus it’s hard for a single/ divorced women with of without children to afford and be allowed to rent an apartment o their own. I know much about Egypt as it’s been in my life for 40 years.
