This is a great video! Especially for those who struggle with rolling their wrists too early. My only input: this is hard for people like myself with certain shoulder disabilities. I was a pitcher/outfielder, and practiced coming over top for most of my life. Staying compact and lead with the elbow low side arm is difficult. Your forehand is pretty much what a forehand should be! Love it.
This video and your previous videos really helped me with a forehand. I’ve started to forehand a dune and it blows my socks off. One of the things that have kept with me everytime I play is “just be an athlete”. LFG thanks Holmes Also you got me on the roadrunners. Lost my favorite one and tried out the freetail. Switched over to them. Specifically the eternal freetail. Moneyyyy
Your Forehand for Idiots video opened my eyes on how just to relax and throw it. I went out that day and threw some of the best forehand throws I have ever thrown. Your teaching style is great IMO. Thank you!
What’s so awesome is I’ve gotten sooooo many messages exactly like this since posting that first video. I think it just made it click for a lot of people and finally gave them somewhere to start with a forehand. Glad I could help🤝
For me, the disc position you are holding it was a lightbulb moment. It's basically a reverse "book shelf" where the disc is tilted up (as opposed to down in the backhand) and makes controlling the disc so much easier! Need to work on the elbow though, thanks for the video 🤜
I started practicing throwing putters when I was starting to learn forehand. After watching your first video, I got this image of something like a fly fishing or a whip. the finger has to follow the whip motion to get that snap at the end. And I think you naturally creating a straight line for the disc to be thrown.
It's so simple but this blew my mind and added distance and accuracy instantly for me. I've never gotten my forehand over 350 but one of my first tries with my go to Wraith went 383. I flicked my Hex to 300 and I've never been able to forehand mids!
Been playing Disc on and off for about 2 years, mainly threw forehand and could only maybe get 150ft at max power and it hasn't improved in probably a year. Ran around RUclips and Reddit trying to figure out what I was doing wrong, and after watching this video pretty much instantly added ~50ft, and I'm not even throwing it at full power - very straight and relaxed 200ft. I don't come from an athletic background so it was always a struggle to get things working right, and because of that, tend to overthink a lot. Timing the loading of the wrist to flick with leading with my elbow was the missing puzzle piece. I kept trying to load my wrist before I did anything, and that seemingly prevented any snap from ever occurring... I'm so mad at myself! Thank you, this video is probably the best explanation and showcase I've seen in regards to flicking/leading with elbow. Only improvement from here!
@broderic so I kinda took your advice. started to lead with elbow but couldn't throw it very well i couldn'tthrow drivers at all. until I used a mid range stable disc 4 4 0 0 and not next led with the elbow but focused more on the flick and it went about 150yards lol now I feel like I'll incorporate the flick along with leading with elbow. thanks again.
im an upshot/approach forehand, strictly only if necessary since i hate my forehand. ive been working on them a little lately but that elbow forward and hand lagging behind i think has helped a ton already. im a chopper with my forehands because when i was new, overstable discs for big flex lines, not good forehands but had good results and now i tend to roll my wrist over when going for power from doing that. focusing on throwing my elbow and my hand lagging through let me throw my overstable fairway from birdie(weapon but not out yet) 300ish on a flat release, a little wobble to clean up, and get some flip out of it for my best looking(not furthest) forehand drive ever during a round and not just practicing. i have good power(used to throw a baseball around 80 or just over) so i know theres good forehands in me somewhere lmao
Yeah dude. Good stuff. I have a trash forehand. A ton of wobble. I wonder if lack of flexibility in the elbow is a hinderance. I completely agree that your hand and fingers need to really lag. I have a tendency to flick the hand through far too early.
The first tip is what unlocked forehands for me! My friend said throw/drive with your elbow, not your hand and everything was easier/made more sense. Secondly something im focusing on now to get better distance is making sure i rotate through my hips/open my chest before driving the elbow forward to get more power without arming as much.
Great vid as always, the elbow leading tip is one I have been attempting so its nice to have confirmation I'm on the right track. would be interested to hear your thoughts on standstill/scramble forehand tips as well (or maybe even forehand rollers?)
TBH my standstill approach is exactly the same, I just incorporate a little body rock into it to get some more power. Forehand rollers unfortunately I have no idea😂
Have you done external rotational baseball stretching at the elbow and shoulder to allow you to assume these positions? Most baseball players have worked on throwing mobility that more easily allow them to hit these ranges of motion easily, a lot of disc golfers have terrible mobility and may struggle to assume elbow first positioning without a lot of stretching and mobility work. I know some bomber forehand players and I’ve known I need to try and lead with the elbow for awhile now but knowing what to do and getting your body to do it are two very different things. Can’t push my destroyers past 300 and as a lefty it’s really hard plateauing my improvement in the game. So many 330-350 right - left doglegs out there that would be so much easier to forehand than turnover. Thanks for the video, I’d love to see one on mobility for baseball/throwing and how that translates to disc golf.
Great stuff! A question, do you feel like you release the disc or does it leave on it's own? Also, adding to what you've said, it's really important to be relaxed if you are driving the elbow. A stiff arm is not going to do this well. If you have a stack of practice putters go throw them in a field just walking around, dont try so hard and be relaxed.
These are all really good tips. I only throw FH, even if the hole calls for a BH off the tee. I use flippy discs to turn all the way over into a R to L shot. The spin and release is everything. I’d like to point out that throwing the elbow may unintentionally result in throwing the disc high. I think you missed a good opportunity to talk about the backswing, as you focused mainly on the forward motion of the FH. Personally, I struggle with staying “on top” of the disc, my weight not fully shifting forward and through the disc. My assumption is that your backswing allows for the elbow throw to work. If you pull back during the backswing and lift the disc as much as you do, it gives you time to bring it back to flat on release. I can see others trying this and having trouble because they’re missing the backswing portion of the motion. Just my 2c. Big ups, Broderic.
Yeah there’s definitely more to forehand that what’s in those video, but I wanted to keep this one short and sweet and focus on mainly the two things that I really think could help. My original forehand tutorial went much more in depth on the entire swing. That said maybe a part 3 is needed to cover even more🤝 great points🤝
@@broderic you're a really great teacher, you did a great job at putting together those top tips in a simple way. I like your backswing - it's whippy, giving you a lot of power. Thanks for your feedback!
Just getting ur arm out in front of you Is very important. So many people who have bad forehand’s flick the disc out before their arm even gets all the way in front of them. You gotta get that thing extended out in front of you.
@@Ghaulmylvahvailuckily no, I’ll get some shoulder tiredness if I play a course that has a lot of power forehands but that’s just because I’m out of shape right now😂
My elbow tendinitis won't tolerate this type of delivery anymore. I'm having to start the throw with my hand lagging behind the elbow (no forward pump and swing back) and make sure I follow through with zero tension in the arm.
So after watching I'm definitely leading more with the elbow now, but still I'm not getting audible snap. What could be causing this? Also come from a baseball background, lean, with 6'0 wingspan. destroyers can go 320-340 on flex but wobble through first half of flight.
