    As posted in the Comments you are starting from a 'high dock'. How would your technique change for beginners starting closer to water level. For example - More swing (throw) for a Stationary Start, more runway for a Run and Jump Start. Great video series. Have you tried the Axis 1150 for Jump-Pump-Glide.

    • @LarryFoiler
      @LarryFoiler  3 года назад

      Hi mate! For a lower dock you can almost just run along with your foil already in the water. As you run and build speed you will feel the resistance pushing back against your hands and you know you’re good to take the leap of faith! 😬 No I haven’t tried that wing yet I’m afraid mate 🤙

      Hey Larry,
      I can pump, to a certain degree, when connecting on a weak wave, etc. but struggle when there’s not a little help to keep me moving along. I’ve been given varied advice...some say you’re mostly unweighting the board and then pushing down with the front foot. Others say it’s all about the back foot, pushing back to get the nose of the board to come up. Perhaps some slow motion video, primarily a side on view, with commentary on what you’re doing, what kind of weight/pressure on each foot at each moment...that might be helpful. I have to believe it’s 90% technique. I know it’s never going to be really easy, but it’s exhausting to try and go for just a little bit. When I watch the pros, it appears effortless with very little body movement. Of course, this is highly refined technique. Whatever you come up with will be much appreciated and, I’m sure, very helpful!

    • @LarryFoiler
      @LarryFoiler  4 года назад +6

      ScotY808 ok sweet! For me it’s definitely about unweighting the board on the “up” stroke and pumping “down” with both feet. Once I figure out the best way to articulate all of this I’ll get a video up 🙏🏼🤙🏽

    • @LarryFoiler

    Right I've got the same foil so no excuses now. My first attempt was 100% nose dives so I'll try to focus on the back foot. I'm 83kg so I'm guess with the same wing I should have enough lift for a 'swing start'?

    • @LarryFoiler
      @LarryFoiler  4 года назад +1

      Definitely no excuses mate! 😃 Just get that back foot landing first, and even slide your foil mast forward on your board, it helps with the nose dives heaps 🤙🏽

    Larry, what is the ideal dock height relative to the board height? Looks like here you have the dock slightly above the board so you are jumping down. Easiest for newbie? Thanks for a great video.

    • @LarryFoiler
      @LarryFoiler  3 года назад

      Cheers and you’re welcome! This one was actually a little lower than ideal for me, quite a big drop. I’d say somewhere closer to level would be better for learning 🤙🏽🤙🏽

  • @hughdunbar9823
    @hughdunbar9823 4 года назад +1

    I'll give it a try when I get to the lake. I guess a 61cm mast would be too short to pump? We wake surf our foil but I haven't been able to generate much power pumping yet.

    • @LarryFoiler
      @LarryFoiler  4 года назад

      You can still give the 61 a shot, but a little longer will probably give you a bit more chance catching the initial drop. Yeww! 🤙🏽😃

    Hey mate how do you think the 460 flat tail will compare to the progressive 450 for flat water pumping?

    • @LarryFoiler
      @LarryFoiler  2 года назад +1

      Hey there! To be honest for flat water pumping there wouldn’t be too much noticeable difference. They both pump great and the flat 460 has less drag at higher speeds such for wing foiling etc… It would be a great comparison to look deeper into though 🧐

  • @carsonking3798
    @carsonking3798 3 года назад +1

    Would you say that jumping off your front foot is required? I’m goofy and feel much better jumping off my left foot.

    • @LarryFoiler
      @LarryFoiler  3 года назад +1

      Hi Mate! Some people have good success jumping off of their back foot, for me my biggest issue is landing on the board and going nose down. By jumping from my front foot it means my back foot is first to touch the board, which helps to prevent the nose dive. Try both ways and let me know which works for you :-)

  • @mmacrobert

    Great instructional - thanks for putting it together. I've heard others refer to riding the foil close to the surface. Any idea what's going on there?

    • @LarryFoiler
      @LarryFoiler  4 года назад +2

      Thank you bud! Yes for sure the pumping is more efficient when the wing is higher in the water column, less water to push above the wing and less mast in the water causing drag. You just gotta keep it in that sweet spot! 🍭🍭

      @mmacrobert 4 года назад +2

      @@LarryFoiler Can you comment on the merits of a 75cm mast for foil pumping compared to something longer - eg. 85cm?

    • @LarryFoiler
      @LarryFoiler  4 года назад

      machonky I haven’t tried anything longer than the 75cm mast, but I don’t think it’s necessary going longer because you’ll get the best efficiency from shallower faster pumping rather than slow and deep. I hope that makes sense? 😃✌🏼

    • @mmacrobert
      @mmacrobert 4 года назад +2

      @@LarryFoiler it does. I'm coming at this from kiting, looking for a no wind alternative, so my starting mast is 85cm. Wondering if I should buy a 75cm specifically.

    • @LarryFoiler
      @LarryFoiler  4 года назад

      machonky try your 85 mast first, it will allow you to start from a higher dock, but low docks and beach starts could be more difficult as you will need to jump higher up onto the board. More importantly, which wing setup will you be using? Size and brand? 🤙🏽
