It's just a little technique. See how few products are needed overall, a cloth and brush to apply. Saphir brand renovateur and cream polish are not that expensive. A few layers rubbed in will get that shine.

I have a shoe box and brush that belong to my grandpa from 1960’s that is exactly like this one. My mom and dad gave it to him for Christmas one year. I remembered I had it in storage. Going this week to get it and start using it. Ordering Saphir from Amazon this week.
Me and a friend sell used shoes on eBay that we get at thrift stores and clean up.
Got a pair of shoe tress for $6 and a pair of Allen Edmond’s for $3.99 at American Thrift store today. Going to be a fun project to restore them. These videos have opened doors for us. Thanks for what you do.

Like the idea of cutting up cotton shirts. One other method I might suggest is old bed sheets. I had a set of 100% cotton flannel bed sheets that had gotten enough use as bed sheets. So I then just cut it into strips and found a new purpose for them. Has worked out well so far.

One thing I'd be curious about is how often do you go through these steps for a pair of shoes, let's say, for a pair of oxfords that you wear 5 days a week to the office. I didn't know about the importance of the conditioning step until just recently. I'd like to treat my shoes right going forward.

I've used Kiwi for ages until I learned they use synthetic turpentine which ins't the best for leather, switched to Red Moose (it's fine) and beginning to transition to Saphir (it's more expensive but justified given the cost of quality footwear).

    1. How long did it take you to bring out that mirror shine from scratch on a fresh pair of shoes?
    2. How often would you recommend completely pulling off old polish and starting a shine from scratch?
    3. As a follow-up to 2, how often does calf need to be conditioned and rehydrated with something like renovateur?

Does it always include the saddle soap then renovateur then creme then wax? Or should it just be brush, then renovateur then creme?

    • @cjanquart
      @cjanquart Год назад

It largely depends on how much use/abuse you're subjecting your footwear; work boots are going to have a lot more dirt/grime than dress shoes worn in an office.
Sounds like your shoes are mainly in an office environment, so daily brushing should be part of your daily dressing routine. Polish on a weekend day and condition monthly. If you want that high gloss shine, have at it but as long as your shoes are brushed daily and not subjected to dirt/grime, brushing daily really keeps them in shape.

Hello, I see there are plenty of videos on how to shine your shoes "from scratch", but what about the ones you take care of often? My question here is:
How do you take care of already waxed shoes?
I have seen people use solvents like acetone to get rid of the wax (as the products you apply over waxed shoes will not penetrate them) and then start from there conditioning and all that. Do you have any insight into that?
I know some of you may think that it is not proper to "wax" the entire shoe, but that is just the way I personally like it, with a very light coat over the whole shoe and then multiple coats on the toe cap.
    Thank you.

I remove all the wax about once a year. Use a blow dryer and heat the wax and wipe it off.

Never ever saw a shine brush like that one. Truely an heirloom.

I found one at the Humane Society thrift store. It was old then (25 years ago), but still does an excellent job. Love it. No one around me shines shoes anymore. I just like owning it.

Maybe you can help with a few things that still baffle me: 1) How do you wrap the cloth around your fingers tightly, 2) Does it not matter that the horsehair brush you use gathers all different color polishes and creams when switching between shoes? I've always thought I needed a new brush for each color

You can use a new brush per color but black and brown is sufficient.
I show in this video how to wrap the cloth around your fingers. Don’t use too much pressure or your fingers will turn purple.

Dang, i respect your effort & dedication, but that's A LOT of expensive shoe essentials. The least I can get is the horsehair brush XD
