Thanks to something called Fourier transformation, you can speed up audio and pitch it down respectively. Basically, you calculate the pitch in Hertz during any given point on the time axis out of the original signal and assign it back onto the speeded up audio. By now basically any audio workstation can do that, back then it might have been a bit fancier. :)
