The Orca bag noise, I have just got the MixPre 6MKII and Orca bag and the first thing I did was to get some self amalgamating tape, cut a thin strip of the tape, gave it a good stretch over the zipper tags at the base where they connect and hey presto, no more noise, a simple fix that could be done at the factory I'm sure. Got the L-mount battery holder but can only have one battery installed at a time. Used the recorder for the first time today and uploaded a few binaural recordings to my channel, really pleased with the recorder sofar.
Thanks! Helped me decide on the K-tek bag. I've searched everywhere but can't find the magnetic microphone clips -- which looks super useful! Currently exploring your all-in-one bundle. You guys are great!
Thanks for the comparison! Looking forward to more videos. I have the MixPre 6 II and the k-tek bag. The xlr is definitely fiddly to remove so I’ve run a short 2 x 3 pin XLR to 5 pin xlr cable from inputs 1&2 that sticks out the right hand side of the bag so I can quickly connect my MS rig.
@@FreeToUseSounds I've haven't tried DMS yet but it's definitely something I'd like to add in the future but my cinela zephyx would need to be modified. I couldn't find any information on MixPre dms. Great tip on the k-tek magnets btw!
Yeah, I totally agree with you on the negatives of the Orca bags, I bought the Orca OR-28 as I thought I wanted the extra room to pack more stuff in and the reality is the mix-pre gets lost, the battery and SD are difficult to get to and the XLR's are just a nightmare to get to also! I think I will be investing in the K-Tek for sure! One solution to the XLR clips on the MixPre is to have some short XLR tails coming out of the MixPre, not as elegant but saves all that fumbling trying to push that clip!
Thanks for the feedback Edward and the adapter cable can be a solution, but I am just wondering do I need one for mono and one for stereo? What about ambisonic and DMS? That sounds like a lot of extra cables for field recording only purposes. Also If I just walk around and don't record, are these cables just hanging out of the bag? It is definitely something that can be improved. Especially knowing I'm not the only one dealing with it.
What a great discovery your channel is. Thanks for the review. For me the k-tek bag is perfect for its size is the one I use. The only thing missing in the description is the magnet adapter that seems to fit perfect. Would you remember the model? Greetings from Spain.
Very well done comparison. I have the Ktek for my MixPre6ii and love it, but there was always that feeling of wondering if I should have gone with the Orca. This answers all the questions and helps me see I made the best decision for my use case. The Orca is an amazing bag, but I am loving the Ktek. Just a note, I had forgot about the issue with difficulty releasing the XLR cables. I have used the Ktek for several months now and releasing the cables is not a serious issue I think about anymore. You just get used to how you have to hold the bag and reach to release the cables. Hopefully you will have the same experience.
I find myself watching more and more of your videos. Thank you for doing creating them and giving us this information! Yes the Mix Pre xlr release is terrible. I have one mounted to my desk, and it's a pain trying to press that tiny release.
I love the K-Tek bag for the mixpre. The little add on pocket Is perfect size for powering from a USB-C Anker battery. Love the idea of using magnets to attach stereo mics! Thanks for sharing your setups.
I'll just say that I haven't removed my SD card in 6 months with the auto USB backup. I tend to do long form recording. So I'll have a battery connected to the SD Hirose adapter and a USB-C Battery bank. When the USBC battery bank runs out of battery the mix-pre automatically switches over to the hirose battery. I can record all day and then I don't have to deal with the swollen AA-battery sled problem.
Great video. We work with two laveliere mics at a time. We need a bag that can carry the transmitters that are plugged into the Zoom F6 while moving around. Where would you place the Transmitters ?
The OR-270 looks like it does little more than add protection (which is great on one hand). I opted for an OR-28 with additional set of lifters for the MixPre, this gives tons of room for running cables and storing microphones etc, without being too large to carry around. Can’t say I’ve tried the K-Tek though, but looks decent :)
Hi Harrison, Oh yes if you need to carry more equipment with you, the Orca is good but also check out the other bags from Sachtler or Strut. They have tons of space.
I just bought the ORCA Bag and I really like the size of it. Everything I need fits right in there. I'm doing fieldrecodings but also work on smaller film sets with wireless. But there are a few things I absolutely don't like. Like you mentioned the noise of the Bag is a big Problem. When doing run and gun shots you shouldn't hear the sound bag when moving. And also the side covering. Would be nice with low profile XLRs, but the Extra Price for those would be more than stepping up to the KTek. But I could deal with that, it's a cheap bag and there are solutions to this. What I absolutely don't like is the weight distribution on this bag. When I wear it it tends to fall facing to my body which makes it harder to use the the knobs and check the levels. I tryed around a lot with positioning stuff in the bag to find a compromise, but I haven't succeded yet. So I'm fixing the strap with the extra loops on the bottom of the bag, which is not ideal. I'm still looking for a reasonable priced Cross strap that hopefully fixes that problem.
I found the best way to to disconnect xlr cables is to sort of tilt up when about to pull out the cable, and then press on the notch. It works like a charm and has helped me so much ! Love your channel btw!
I'm looking for a bag for my Mix Pre 10ii . I'm on the fence between a cheaper Orca 272 and the K-Tek Stingray Junior X as well... watching this I'm tempted to spring for the Stingray, if I can find any in stock. 👍🏽👍🏽
Hi Ed.. Oh yes right now there is a supply problem all across the world but reach out to Tino from Ktek. Maybe they still have somewhere in the warehouse a bag.

Thank you so much for this great comparison. I do have a question though. Have you ever tried to use the Ktek with a bigger battery, such as a Hawkwoods DV-F990 Sony 10200mA. Looking at the dimensions (5.9 x 3.8 x 7cm) I am wondering if one could still attach the rain cover ? Thanks 🙂
Hi Anton! I only used the Watson batteries with the F6. I think in order to use with the Sound Devices you would need another adapter. I don't remember it but I think the batteries are to big for the K-Tek bag.
@@FreeToUseSounds Danke Marcel. Yes, the 10200mA batteries might be a bit too bulky for the K-Tek bag, which is very unfortunate. So probably it will be the Orca, or even Laavu bag 😒
I wish for an update on these bags. How many years have these bags been available without any improvements? Meanwhile, camera and travel bags are constantly advancing.
just what I was looking for a bag for my mixpre 6 II : By the way, I have the hawkwoods Sony battery adapter... it sticks out from the MiXPre quite a lot... will it still fit in the bag(s) ??? Thank you for your fascinating channel
@@FreeToUseSounds thx for reply.. the hawkwoods clips on at the back, where the battery packs go, obstructing SD card access. But it stick out from the top of the MixPre by about 1 cm... I can also power via a powertank, but that needs the inconvvenience of a cable, of course.
I bought the Ktek bag but I have the sled for the Sony rechargeable batteries attached and that pushes the MixPre 6 II up so high that I can’t attach the headphones or access the gain knob. A definite problem for me. I have tried moving the floor of the bag lower but have not found that Ktek planned for this configuration. Looking for solutions but for now I’ll have to go without a bag until I figure something out.
