    I work in a private owned pet store, and the advice is legit. We have a zoologist and vet on staff, and most everyone that works there has extensive experience in husbandry. I jumped on buying one, because weve been trying to get them in, and have only gotten 2 in the whole time I've worked there. We are very picky about our suppliers, and will stop going through them if they suck.

    Great video, My tortoises are still young at the moment so they're in a large under-bed storage box and there's plenty of space for them there for now but I'm planning on building them a much larger tortoise table for when they grow, and seeing yours has given me a good idea of how to lay it out. The only thing I think you maybe should have mentioned that beginners don't always realise is the importance of providing them with UVB. I notice you have a UVB light strip so obviously you know about this but you didn't mention it in the video - a lot of first time owners just get a basking lamp, and quite often just a UVA one, and their tortoises can develop problems through not receiving enough UVB, which they need to help them metabolise calcium to make sure their shell and bones grow strong and healthy. It's very important to have a UVB strip, especially for Russian Tortoises because they live in hot deserts and spend the majority of their time in the sun while in the wild, so you have to have the right level of UVB to emulate that, and basking bulbs alone, while they provide the right amount of heat for them, do not give them enough UVB.

    I know this was forever ago, but I just adopted 2 Russian tortoises from a coworker (they were bought for her three year old).
    They’re in the same enclosure. This is my first night 🥶
    They came with almost nothing! Just some lettuce and an enclosure… no hides, stones, no info on soaking, a lamp with a bulb (I did identify)…
    Bless you. I do feel rushed because they’re HERE lol. But yes, don’t stress… I already have better foods in-the-mail…. But I have a long way to go to treat these guys like family.
    To anyone- Please reach out if you can help!

      I don't recommend keeping mature tortoises in pairs in the sam enclosure. I think the most important points to research are:
      1. Diet
      2. Heat and lighting
      3. Enclosure size
      4. Substrate
      5. Health checking

    • @frankbianca5037
      @frankbianca5037  4 года назад

      xRaindropp Trackz maybe offer him some enrichment if you have a yard take them out see if some fresh air and natural sun will help and if your yard has dandelions my tortoise loves dandelions so he runs around and eats them all up keep an eye him make sure there’s no mushrooms in the yard also they blend in well with their surroundings so keeping an ion him so you won’t lose them just give them about 15 to 20 minutes outside give them some exercise instead of being in the boring enclosure it’s always the same

    • @prodbyxraindropp
      @prodbyxraindropp 4 года назад

      frank & bianca thanks for the advice but unfortunately today I found out my tortoise isnt moving even when I pick him up, touch him, and soak him in water. I don’t think he’s dead though because his head still stays in his shell even when I turn him face down. I’m not sure but I think he maintains muscle control. Maybe he’s hibernating but do they sleep that deep that it doesn’t respond to anything.

      Use organic dirt so it is safe but yes... you can mix sand with dirt. Don’t feed your tortoise on the dirt/sand to reduce them ingesting the substrate. Get a piece of slate or flat rock to feed them on. Good luck!

    • @frankbianca5037
      @frankbianca5037  7 лет назад +2

      Jasmine Chavez try not to have your substrate too moist are very damp all the time that attracts gnats and always make sure to clean up after tortoise whenever he poops are his old lettuce that you feed him and every once in a while give them fresh hay and fresh substrate and a little trick you can do is hang fly sticky traps on the ceiling above the enclosure.

    Thank you for this video. I believe it's the second video i have watched from you. They are really informative. I had a russian tortoise too. Her name was Bella. I took her in the backyard this past tuesday to graze and explore. My neighbor was talking to me and i looked away too long and she was gone:'( My whole street has been keeping an eye out for her. All my neighbors have helped me look for her in the yard. I posted an ad on craigslist offering a $75 reward, i notified the local animal shelters and i even posted flyers around my area. No one has found her yet. I hope she is safe and happy wherever she is. do you have any tips on finding her? i set a homemade live trap in my backyard and left it there for 3 days. it was untouched. the food was still there. i'm not sure what else to do except keep looking in the same spots, i guess.

      Joe Smith try to buy a tabletop or make one just like the one you see in this video if you can't afford any of that you can get a cement tub from Home Depot they're open air and they're big enough for a baby even a full grown Russian tortoise at least until you figure out a better solution.

    I have a russian tortoise and he lives in a 20 gallon fish tank rn it's very narrow and I hate it,Me and my dad want to make him a new wooden enclosure out of wood.i don't know how big it should be or if I should have levels to eliminate space.My room is very small and I'm afraid I don't have much room at all.he slams into the walls and it bothers me,it's horrible.Im older now and I understand more now.whats the smallest size I can go that's healthy for him?Can I use a Christmas tree storage tube?I need help and I'm not sure what do do.i only have one tortoise.Can you please reply I'm in a problem rn,thanks.

      Hailey McNaught get him out of that tank even if you have to go to Home Depot and buy a cement tub get him into the open-air. As far as a wooden enclosure goes I've never done levels but bigger is always better and the most important thing is, just get him out of the tank.

      He slams into the side of the tank because tortoises dont really understand the concept of glass, which is another reason they arent good to be used as tortoise enclosures on top of them not allowing enough air for them. but if thats the only option for now then you need to wrap some sort of paper around it so he cant see out of it and it will stop him from slamming into it. but i recommend going to walmart and you can get a pretty cheap large storage container that will give him more room, last him a long time, and will give much better airflow.

    Could I ask what your enclosure dimensions are?

      Hi , sorry I am late but I am doing lots of research for russian tortoise and most people or websites say like an average sage for an adult is like 91cm by 182 cm🖤.

      Bailey Boo just get the proper heat lamp and a UV Light and he’ll be good I’ve had mine in my room for years I had built him a custom enclosure inside my closet

    He needs to have a water dish, so he doesn’t dehydrate.
