Your toitoise loves the camera it's like every time you film he's out showing off, he's great, I have. Horsefield and they have such great personalities
Thank you for making this video!! I have been stressing a lot on how to make everything "perfect". Going to stop overthinking and being hard on myself so I can enjoy my new buddy. Very helpful. Have a great day :)
Thank you for making this video. Recently bought a russian tortois and didn't realize how over my head I am but this video has really helped keep me grounded as I navigate through the care
I purchased a tortoise yesterday and bought everything I was told I needed Thankyou for your video it definitely helped me relax because I was stressing about everything you mentioned God bless you and your family
I’m so glad you made this love! Your very helpful, I was panicked I was going to fail making a enclosure because it seems so complicated but then I saw how yours looked and how happy your little guy was and it put me at ease :) thank you!
So glad this video got recommended I’ve been stressing about my tortoise and I actually was going to go to a PetSmart here in California too to get one
Aw you can tell how much you love him. We have a Russian tortoise he is almost 2 years old and I love him so much they are such beautiful creatures I really love your videos and will take your advice on wetting the soil and I will also add hey thank you for your videos 👍
I work in a private owned pet store, and the advice is legit. We have a zoologist and vet on staff, and most everyone that works there has extensive experience in husbandry. I jumped on buying one, because weve been trying to get them in, and have only gotten 2 in the whole time I've worked there. We are very picky about our suppliers, and will stop going through them if they suck.
Great video, My tortoises are still young at the moment so they're in a large under-bed storage box and there's plenty of space for them there for now but I'm planning on building them a much larger tortoise table for when they grow, and seeing yours has given me a good idea of how to lay it out. The only thing I think you maybe should have mentioned that beginners don't always realise is the importance of providing them with UVB. I notice you have a UVB light strip so obviously you know about this but you didn't mention it in the video - a lot of first time owners just get a basking lamp, and quite often just a UVA one, and their tortoises can develop problems through not receiving enough UVB, which they need to help them metabolise calcium to make sure their shell and bones grow strong and healthy. It's very important to have a UVB strip, especially for Russian Tortoises because they live in hot deserts and spend the majority of their time in the sun while in the wild, so you have to have the right level of UVB to emulate that, and basking bulbs alone, while they provide the right amount of heat for them, do not give them enough UVB.
i swear to god russian tortoises and specifically russian tortoises know what cameras are. my tortoise usually just watches me with big eyes. when i take out my phone she legit starts posing like a model and gives me plenty of angles.
This was a greqt basoc video and really reqlly relaxing for first time tort owners! Thank you for this its such a scary thing have cold blooded animals this helps so much!
to be honest just listen to the audio i said to myself if this guy goes into this level on the details i gotta see his enclosure. saw pieces cuz so big i had to smash the subscribe.
Thanks for making this video I've been stressing a lot and I've already gotten a glass tank cuz I didn't know they hated it and I can't just return it cuz I already opened it and stuff but when he gets bigger I'll just replace it
I know this was forever ago, but I just adopted 2 Russian tortoises from a coworker (they were bought for her three year old). They’re in the same enclosure. This is my first night 🥶 They came with almost nothing! Just some lettuce and an enclosure… no hides, stones, no info on soaking, a lamp with a bulb (I did identify)… Bless you. I do feel rushed because they’re HERE lol. But yes, don’t stress… I already have better foods in-the-mail…. But I have a long way to go to treat these guys like family. To anyone- Please reach out if you can help!
I don't recommend keeping mature tortoises in pairs in the sam enclosure. I think the most important points to research are: 1. Diet 2. Heat and lighting 3. Enclosure size 4. Substrate 5. Health checking
I currently have mine in a tank I have a cat and worry about a open habitat I was thinking about a wood raised garden bed w/ legs he's so active outside his habitat but in it he likes to hide and burrow I just want a happy healthy tortellini!
Thankyou for the advice, I've got a Russian tortoise, I acquired him after his owner died, I use edible bedding and aspen, but was told dont use aspen, I only used it as his owner used it and I kept it the same, I stress all the time that I'm doing right by him, I've read loads of information and can be confusing, should I change to straw instead, thankyou sharon from uk
Thank You!! I have been stressing about this forever, we are getting one in September, and I was stressing myself out. Do you have any more lighting details?
Omg your videos are amazing and made less stressed out! Thank you what do you feed your turtle! I’m getting one shipped to me and I’m getting his habitat ready! what substrate do you prefer? This is my first turtle and I want it to be happy and healthy and I honestly want to stay on a budget but I want it to have everything it needs, I will spend the extra money if needed.
when I got my tortoise, they told me to get what's in his tank already, and they gave me a guinea pig house. my tortoise won't go inside and won't eat, what's should I do, when I first got him he was covered in filth, and they said they just gave him a bath. is there an easier way to make him eat tortoise food, he is almost 4 mouth old, so still a baby
Do you recommend any breeders or places to buy Russian tortoises from? I’m really not sure where to get a Russian tortoise from. Or where did you get your tortoise?
My Russian is 10 months old. Right now he is in a 30 gallon. I will build him a BIG enclosure when I move. But I can’t find any half logs. Where did you get yours?
Azgov Loves you well not that often you dont want it to be humid...i would say once you see the soil is completely dried out get a big cup of water makes it into the soil and you should be good
xRaindropp Trackz maybe offer him some enrichment if you have a yard take them out see if some fresh air and natural sun will help and if your yard has dandelions my tortoise loves dandelions so he runs around and eats them all up keep an eye him make sure there’s no mushrooms in the yard also they blend in well with their surroundings so keeping an ion him so you won’t lose them just give them about 15 to 20 minutes outside give them some exercise instead of being in the boring enclosure it’s always the same
frank & bianca thanks for the advice but unfortunately today I found out my tortoise isnt moving even when I pick him up, touch him, and soak him in water. I don’t think he’s dead though because his head still stays in his shell even when I turn him face down. I’m not sure but I think he maintains muscle control. Maybe he’s hibernating but do they sleep that deep that it doesn’t respond to anything.
I bought my son a Russian Tortoise when he was 2 yrs old. Long story short, I would like to know what kinda of hay to u use and dirt and where do u get it “buy it”?? Please this will help us
hey man not being rude or anything but i think you need a water bowl for your tortoise I might not be able to see it in the video but I just wanted to say
I just got myself a russian tortoise (Dimitri) a few months ago and I've been freaking out because I think his tank is too small. what do you think is a good sized tank for Dimitri? He's young too. (still fits in the palm of my hand)
+frank & Bianca thank you for the reply me and my dad are thinking of making him a new enclosure soon! Thanks so much,I want the best for my little buddy!
Samurai Scruffy Russian tortoises, like the one in the video, are a pretty good one. There’s also the Herman’s tortoise, keep in mind that females are larger.
I didn't buy my setup from any website what I did I went to my local hardware store and bought the wood and built it myself including the little box. The half logs with cocoa fiber and the hay I bought from Petsmart. If you're looking for an enclosure my advice to you is be creative and build it yourself have fun with it but be mindful of your tortoise any questions feel free to ask
Use organic dirt so it is safe but yes... you can mix sand with dirt. Don’t feed your tortoise on the dirt/sand to reduce them ingesting the substrate. Get a piece of slate or flat rock to feed them on. Good luck!
What should I do if my tortoise keeps digging and why is he digging so much? He just keeps trying and trying to dig behind his hide all day and I can't get him to stop. What should I do. I put twice as much substrate in the tank recently so he can dig but he still won't stop digging
Umm I have a question.......how do you keep bugs out of your enclosure cause i have a baby Russian tortoise and I need help how you keep bugs out of your enclosure
Jasmine Chavez try not to have your substrate too moist are very damp all the time that attracts gnats and always make sure to clean up after tortoise whenever he poops are his old lettuce that you feed him and every once in a while give them fresh hay and fresh substrate and a little trick you can do is hang fly sticky traps on the ceiling above the enclosure.
I have a Russian and I have all calcium sand but it isn’t deep for him to burrow should I get some Timothy hay and put it in a corner of the enclosure or do I make it deeper with more sand
Fishcken 69 You should mix your stand with the Coco fiber and do a spot of Timothy hay in one corner so He can burrow in that mixture or he can burrow in the hay
Thank you for this video. I believe it's the second video i have watched from you. They are really informative. I had a russian tortoise too. Her name was Bella. I took her in the backyard this past tuesday to graze and explore. My neighbor was talking to me and i looked away too long and she was gone:'( My whole street has been keeping an eye out for her. All my neighbors have helped me look for her in the yard. I posted an ad on craigslist offering a $75 reward, i notified the local animal shelters and i even posted flyers around my area. No one has found her yet. I hope she is safe and happy wherever she is. do you have any tips on finding her? i set a homemade live trap in my backyard and left it there for 3 days. it was untouched. the food was still there. i'm not sure what else to do except keep looking in the same spots, i guess.
sorry about your tortoise that's very unfortunate.that has happened to me before years ago. maybe your tortoise made a borrow and is just sleeping or trying to hibernate idk but if it comes up take it straight to the vet.sorry.
You talked about buying a 400 gallon tank. I'm about to get a Russian and I'm not sure if that's big enough. Is it for a baby Russian(around 6 months)?
Joe Smith try to buy a tabletop or make one just like the one you see in this video if you can't afford any of that you can get a cement tub from Home Depot they're open air and they're big enough for a baby even a full grown Russian tortoise at least until you figure out a better solution.
I have a russian tortoise and he lives in a 20 gallon fish tank rn it's very narrow and I hate it,Me and my dad want to make him a new wooden enclosure out of wood.i don't know how big it should be or if I should have levels to eliminate space. My room is very small and I'm afraid I don't have much room at all.he slams into the walls and it bothers me,it's horrible.Im older now and I understand more now.whats the smallest size I can go that's healthy for him?Can I use a Christmas tree storage tube?I need help and I'm not sure what do do.i only have one tortoise. Can you please reply I'm in a problem rn,thanks.
Hailey McNaught get him out of that tank even if you have to go to Home Depot and buy a cement tub get him into the open-air. As far as a wooden enclosure goes I've never done levels but bigger is always better and the most important thing is, just get him out of the tank.
He slams into the side of the tank because tortoises dont really understand the concept of glass, which is another reason they arent good to be used as tortoise enclosures on top of them not allowing enough air for them. but if thats the only option for now then you need to wrap some sort of paper around it so he cant see out of it and it will stop him from slamming into it. but i recommend going to walmart and you can get a pretty cheap large storage container that will give him more room, last him a long time, and will give much better airflow.
Quick question 🙋 😅 I'm getting a torotise for my birthday and we are buying the torotise table this month bc we are low on money so we are taking it one eteoata time and my tortoise table that I'm getting is 91.5cm to 152cm is that big enough bc ur tortoises table is humongous 😂
Hi , sorry I am late but I am doing lots of research for russian tortoise and most people or websites say like an average sage for an adult is like 91cm by 182 cm🖤.
ik im late and idk if u will reply or not but I'm think about getting a Russian tortoise and keeping it in my bedroom. But would the room temperature affect the tortoise in any way??
Bailey Boo just get the proper heat lamp and a UV Light and he’ll be good I’ve had mine in my room for years I had built him a custom enclosure inside my closet
Your toitoise loves the camera it's like every time you film he's out showing off, he's great, I have. Horsefield and they have such great personalities

GdlookincookinwKaye your welcome.
Thank you so much for saying what you did about not stressing out. I was on the verge of a panic attack due to the UV lighting. Thanks again!!
I’m rescuing a Russian tortoise tonight, and this really calmed my nerves. Thank you!!!!

Happy it helped
That was great. I was stressing, but you made me feel a lot better.
So glad this video got recommended I’ve been stressing about my tortoise and I actually was going to go to a PetSmart here in California too to get one
That is one lucky tortoise. You have built him the most beautiful enclosure.
Aw you can tell how much you love him. We have a Russian tortoise he is almost 2 years old and I love him so much they are such beautiful creatures I really love your videos and will take your advice on wetting the soil and I will also add hey thank you for your videos 👍
Your tortoise is so lucky he is so cute and looks super healthy! Amazing job dude.
Appreciate you making the video! 😊

I LOVE your set-up.
Thanks for the advice I just inherited Russian turtle they kept in a 30 gallon aquarium for a year about the same size as yours.
Your boy loves the camera ha ha. I love your set up. do you still have this set up or do you have a new one ?
i swear to god russian tortoises and specifically russian tortoises know what cameras are. my tortoise usually just watches me with big eyes. when i take out my phone she legit starts posing like a model and gives me plenty of angles.
Taking care of my mothers torotise for her and she had no idea what she was doing so thank you so much
Thank you!! I always stress out 🤦🏽♀️

I'm afraid I can't have a huge enclosed like yours my rooms to small and I share a room
Do you recommend I should buy mazuri tortoise diet or are they optional?
Man I read reviews on substrate and it will say it’s all good then bang this has mites blah blah blah I’m so confused on what to buy
how often should you bath Russian tortoises ?????
when I got my tortoise, they told me to get what's in his tank already, and they gave me a guinea pig house. my tortoise won't go inside and won't eat, what's should I do, when I first got him he was covered in filth, and they said they just gave him a bath. is there an easier way to make him eat tortoise food, he is almost 4 mouth old, so still a baby
Is he alright?
how big should the table be? is 36"x18" enough???
Do you recommend any breeders or places to buy Russian tortoises from? I’m really not sure where to get a Russian tortoise from. Or where did you get your tortoise?
Wow thank you this really helped me. Can they fit in a 20 gallon tank?
BaconTheComrade BTC absolutely not. If you have one, PLEASE do not keep them in a 20 gallon tank for an extended period of time.
My Russian is 10 months old. Right now he is in a 30 gallon. I will build him a BIG enclosure when I move. But I can’t find any half logs. Where did you get yours?
How often do i spray the dirt
Azgov Loves you well not that often you dont want it to be humid...i would say once you see the soil is completely dried out get a big cup of water makes it into the soil and you should be good
Do you hibernate your tortoise. Because I’m thinking bout getting one, and I don’t really know what to do?
Can I use a spray bottle to wet the dirt
My tortoise is not eating, sleeping a lot, and not very active. I offer him good food, warmth and cool place, and I spray his a dirt a little daily
xRaindropp Trackz maybe offer him some enrichment if you have a yard take them out see if some fresh air and natural sun will help and if your yard has dandelions my tortoise loves dandelions so he runs around and eats them all up keep an eye him make sure there’s no mushrooms in the yard also they blend in well with their surroundings so keeping an ion him so you won’t lose them just give them about 15 to 20 minutes outside give them some exercise instead of being in the boring enclosure it’s always the same

Could you make a video how to make that plz
What kind of dirt is this
what is hay used for
Wanda Smalls the hay is good in in fiber and is a very good place to hide the cool spot shaded
That tortoise cute
I bought my son a Russian Tortoise when he was 2 yrs old. Long story short, I would like to know what kinda of hay to u use and dirt and where do u get it “buy it”?? Please this will help us
Naomi Catalina Fernandez I love you lol
mine was bit on the shell
and survived
could you make a video about lighting for your tortoise (Russian tortoise)
ruclips.net/video/z_FBQ_WXvVY/видео.html
start from the 6 minute mark
hey man not being rude or anything but i think you need a water bowl for your tortoise I might not be able to see it in the video but I just wanted to say
I just got myself a russian tortoise (Dimitri) a few months ago and I've been freaking out because I think his tank is too small. what do you think is a good sized tank for Dimitri? He's young too. (still fits in the palm of my hand)
alexa evans forty gallon tank
+frank & Bianca thank you for the reply me and my dad are thinking of making him a new enclosure soon! Thanks so much,I want the best for my little buddy!
+3NICKK Thank you that might be a qicker option😃
Can you recommend me a tortoise to get please? A small one
Samurai Scruffy Russian tortoises, like the one in the video, are a pretty good one. There’s also the Herman’s tortoise, keep in mind that females are larger.
List the websites where you bought your set up
I didn't buy my setup from any website what I did I went to my local hardware store and bought the wood and built it myself including the little box. The half logs with cocoa fiber and the hay I bought from Petsmart. If you're looking for an enclosure my advice to you is be creative and build it yourself have fun with it but be mindful of your tortoise any questions feel free to ask
what type of lights?
How often to you change your dirt?
3 months you answered my question at the end...lol
im very late to the vid but im wondering if sand mixed with dirt is a good substrate?
Use organic dirt so it is safe but yes... you can mix sand with dirt. Don’t feed your tortoise on the dirt/sand to reduce them ingesting the substrate. Get a piece of slate or flat rock to feed them on. Good luck!
Do you still have your Russian tortoise
Do Russian tortoises have to hibernate?
No but its recommended that you do. 😊
Awesome video. Is it true Russian Tortoise live 40 or more years?
What should I do if my tortoise keeps digging and why is he digging so much? He just keeps trying and trying to dig behind his hide all day and I can't get him to stop. What should I do. I put twice as much substrate in the tank recently so he can dig but he still won't stop digging
May i ask what type of tank do you have him in?...Also the temperature of the hot side and cold side.
I have a baby Greek tortoise named Banx. Do you think that this would be accurate for him too considering Greek and Russians are very similar?
I have a Russian and I have all calcium sand but it isn’t deep for him to burrow should I get some Timothy hay and put it in a corner of the enclosure or do I make it deeper with more sand
Fishcken 69 You should mix your stand with the Coco fiber and do a spot of Timothy hay in one corner so He can burrow in that mixture or he can burrow in the hay
I. Have a plastic Ben for him untill I get money to buy them something nice
Well how big is it cuz if it’s not big enough you need something bigger
Getting my son a tortoise which i will prob be mainly taking care of and man am i stressing
I posted an ad on craigslist offering a $75 reward, i notified the local animal shelters and i even posted flyers around my area. sorry about your tortoise that's very unfortunate.that has happened to me before years ago. maybe your tortoise made a borrow and is just sleeping or trying to hibernate idk but if it comes up take it straight to the vet.sorry.
by the way my tortoise ended up coming up a few weeks later but it was sick.
+frank & bianca Thanks. that gives me hope that it showed up eventually. where did you lose him and was he found in the same area he was lost?
Julie Carson did you find your tortoise?
Julie Carson did u find her yet?
I see a cuttlefish bone 1:07
👏 😆
My tortoise climbed his log😂😅

He needs to have a water dish, so he doesn’t dehydrate.
Frank i jus got my tortoise and hes on shredded aspen and also keeps trying to digging is this normal?
R3PTILE GUY yes that's normal. Throw some Coco fiber in half of the enclosure at least
frank & bianca im using a combination of shredded aspen and coco husk is that okay?. And your suggesting to give it a more deeper level of substrate?
