Excellent Tutorial. Creating this was a success and really easy just as you stated. Thanks so much!!
+PonderosaLR That's awesome! I'm so glad you enjoyed this tutorial! Thank you! :)
You're very welcome. To be honest, I hate working with fondant (which is why I never do) because it is SO flimsy. Gumpaste is much much better to work with because it is pliable, holds its shape, dries quickly, and doesn't crack as easily as fondant. :)
Hi Laura, you are such an awesome baker! Thank you so much for this wonderful tutorial.
HI Giovanni! Thank you very much! :) It's my pleasure to share with you. :)
This was a great tutorial! The hat is awesome! Thanks for be willing to share!

You can DEFINITELY make it Mayra! Anything you see US doing, you CAN do! It just takes patience and practice. :)
Will be making a mini Mini for my granddaughter who is going to Disney for the 1st time this week:)
Gracias! Me da mucho gusto que los disfrutes! Dios te bendiga! :)
De nada Flavia! Que bueno que te gusto! Gracias! :)
Great tutorial, thanks for sharing. Is that the same Micky topper as the one you put the wooden dowel through the entire cake and plugged it with fondant? It was a brown with a #2 on the Micky hat.
Hi Laura, I really appreciate your attention to detail & thorough explanations. This shows you truly love what you do, and your projects are fantastic as a result. One quick question...I bought a 4" Flora Craft (green) half ball, to avoid having to cut or sand/smooth, but I think its the flakey kind of styrofoam. Do you think this will work?
Thank you Catherine! I do love what I do. Thank you! The flakey styrofoam definitely does not work. I recommend using smooth foam. That's really the only kind that will work. :)
Brilliant tutorial. Thank you so much!
Hello Laura! I looooove the smoothness of this hat! Thank you so much for the patience you have making these tutorials. Can I use piping gel as suppose to tylose? thanks
Thank you Jessica! Glad you enjoyed this tutorial! Love making them for you guys! Tylose is really for mixing with fondant to turn it into gumpaste or to make edible glue with. I've never tried piping gel for making a mickey or minnie hat so not sure if it would work. :)
Great work! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you Natoya! You're very kind. :)
Thank you for sharing... Love how detailed
This tutorial is amazing, thank you so much
Glad you enjoyed it. Thank you! :)
Thank you Linda! God bless you too my friend!
Thanks for the tutorial it was great, your work is wonderful
Thank you Clara! :)
I love this and many of your other tutorials! I am very happy with the Mickey Hat cake topper. Thank you for sharing your talent. Will you also consider doing a tutorial on creating the Paw Patrol Puppies as cake toppers?
Thank you so much Cheryl! We appreciate that very much! Yes of course we will! :)
Thank you Thalia! :)
hi so i steamed my cake and i think i over did it b/c it looked melted and it stayed like that as you know it keeps the finishing results.but practice makes perfect. and i big thank you as all your helpful videos have helped me bake and create faster than ever. much love.
Hi Elena! You're VERY welcome! We're glad you have found the videos helpful! Yes, perhaps a little more distance between the steamer and the cake, and less steaming. Merry Christmas! :)
Thank you for your tutorials, you make me feel confident to make this mm topper! Hoping you can answer my question: can this topper be made a week in advance and if so, how would I store it? I just dont think I could make the cake and topper all at the same time. Thank you!
You're VERY welcome Fatima! Thank you for watching! You CAN make it! No problem! You can make this topper even a few months in advance. Just store in a dry area free of humidity, high heat, and dust. :)
Simplemente genial muchas gracias por el tutorial!!!
Thank you soo much this is so cool
Thank you for sharing your knowledge, Laura. This is fantastic. How long would this last before the fondant will start to break down?
Thank you for the tutorial! amazing and so detailed. :)
So helpful!!! Thank you
Awesome tutorial! Not complicated or confusing. Question: what is the process of steaming the gum paste?
You both are a true blessing and life savers. I absolutely love your videos.
My question is this... would I be able to cover it in fondant? And will it be a problem if I want to steam it if I live in a humid area? Ft Worth/Dallas. Please help. Thanks and God bless.
Thank you Julie! You "can" cover it in fondant, but I HIGHLY recommend using gumpaste because it hardens much more and is sturdier. Especially where it's needed like the ears. You can steam it but if you're having a very humid day, be sure to only steam lightly. :)
Thank you! :)
Just had to share . Our Hobby Lobby in Ocala had those foam balls already pre cut!! Oh the little
things . :) :)
Yes, we have those now too! yay! :)
laurapoopie Our hobby lobby has the precut 4" circles, but they are the green Styrofoam for flowers. Is that ok to use as long as it's smooth?
amazing Laura!
Thank you Rebeca! I used my tappits from FMM. :)
Could I make this with rice krispies? And is so, do you think it can hold the fondant ears? My last question is: What fondant do you use or would you recommend? Thank you for your feedback, I appreciate it. Your cakes are so beautiful!
You most certainly can, however you would not get as smooth a surface as you would using styrofoam, but you can come close. If you don't make the ears too heavy, and depending how big you make the hat, it should uphold the weight of the ears. Thank you for your kind words! :)
Love it!! Minnie mouse topper pls!!!
Very nice thanks, a question why do you cover the dummy with gumpaste as appose to fondant. Thanks in advance.
You're very welcome! Actually, we don't use fondant. This is 100% gumpaste so it doesn't break down ever. :)
thank you for you demostration.
You're very welcome Rosa! Thank you for watching! :)
Thank you. :)
Excellent video with good, clear instructions. I would have liked to know why you didn't use fondant.
Thank you Deborah! We don't like making decorations with fondant because it's weak and doesn't hold its shape very well. Gumpaste is strong, and there's a lot less cracking and wrinkling. I hope that helps and thank you for watching! :)
Love the video!...but how did you get the gumpaste to be super black? What kind if food coloring did you use?
It's beautiful. The tutorial is great, image and the speach. Thank you. I would like my hb to steam my work too, but....! :P
Thank you Ana! :)
Hi Laura, I would like to know how do you do the disney writing on the hat with the birthday persons name? Wat materials do you use? Need help bc im making a mickey cake in two weeks...love your work!
Perfect tutorial.
Wonderful tutorial :) What kind of cutter set did you use for the number 1?
Hi Laura, you mentioned putting royal icing on the bottom of the topper can you use buttercream also?
Hi Rosie, If the cake really won't be moved at all once decorated, I suppose it would be okay to use buttercream. To REALLY secure it if you are going to be delivering it or moving it around, I would highly recommend not using buttercream and sticking to royal. :)
Thank you for sharing this. Very nice tutorial. please tell me how to steam the topper. I loved this. plan to make it for my grandaughter's birthday this month. She is a Minnie Mouse fan.
You're very welcome! We have a tutorial here on our channel on how to steam. :)
You're very welcome! :)
Thank you !!
Thank you so much for the awesome tutorials! Just want to ask can I use edible glue instead of shortening to top part of the styrofoam ball instead of the shortening? Thanks again for sharing your talent!
+Lydia Ibarra-Pathan You're very welcome Lydia! I don't see why not!? Give it a try and let me know how it works. :)
Hi Laura! I was wondering how far in advance would I be able to make the topper? And how long would it typically good for to keep?
Hi Krissy! You can make it weeks in advance. :)
Hi Laura & Arnie was wondering how long will this topper last? Would I be able to make one a few weeks before I need it?
+Allie P Hi Allie! Yes of course you can make it several weeks before. Just be sure not to refrigerate. :)
Thank you! Yes, she's right, it's pre-colored Wilton black. :)
You're welcome Melissa! :)
Me encanto, solo tengo una duda, que es lo que le pones a la esfera antes de ponerle el gum paste?
Oh okay! That's right. Since I watched the Gumpaste video I figured she only used white...lol....cool thanks :)
Awesome video... you mention to steam it at the end... you mean with like a steam iron??
+Chris Brown Thanks Chris! I mean with a hand-held steamer. We have 2 tutorials on this. One on how to steam cakes and the other on how to steam cake toppers. :)
This is awesome! Could you please share what food coloring you used to get that black, red, and yellow?!! Thanks a million!
Thank you! We buy our fondant pre-colored black then just turn it into gumpaste by adding tylose. :)
Ohh ok! Thanks a lot :)
hi Laura, I would like to know what is that thing you are putting on the foam to stick the fondant..? My computer lost volume and can't hear what it is...
The top layer of the cake I am making is going to be a 6" half round, making the shape of the hat itself. Do you think the ears on skewers will be too heavy to hold up securely if inserted into cake instead of something more structured, like the styrofoam ball you used in the video? My daughter-in-law wants the "hat" part to be made of cake.
Hi Sheryl, If the cake you are making the hat out of is not a very soft and crumbly cake and doesn't fall apart easily, it should be more than enough to hold up the weight of the ears and skewers. It might help to not make the ears too thick. Try and keep them as thin as possible (without seeing the shape of the skewer through them of course) to help keep the weight to a minimum. Also, I recommend keeping the skewers as long as possible so they can go in a good amount into your cake. Hope that helps. :)
@@krazykoolcakes Thank you, so much, for your response to my question! The 6" half round will sit atop an 8" layer, so I can leave the skewers long enough to go into that cake, as well. I very much enjoyed watching your tutorial and am impressed with the care you take to make a quality product. Sadly, that is something not easily found in our day. How blessed those who live in your area are, to be able to have access to your work! Thanks again.
Muchísimas gracias Roberto! Me da mucho gusto que te gusten mis vídeos! Uno no tiene que ser experto. Ni yo soy experta. Simplemente un poquito de practica. :) Dios lo bendiga! :)
great tutorial, thank you :), I was wondering what brand cutter/mold did you use for the number 1? I cant find a cutter for numbers that I like.
do you have a tutorial for that jack skellington in the back???! loooove it!!! lol
I wondered the same thing ! I've come to the conclusion that it's just a bobble head Jack Skellington ! You can see his head bobbling around doing the video !
woooohooo thanks for sharing
You're very welcome Sunshine! :)
r u covering the cake with the same gum paste that u made for the ears or thats just plain fondant??
We only cover our cakes with fondant Nary. This tutorial is using only gumpaste.
Hello hope you read this. In total how much does it cost to make it? Thanks you have awesome videos.
Hi Joy! I've never really calculate how much my materials cost to make it. :)
hi Laura, I'm always having a problem with fondant... when I roll it out even if I use powder sugar it sticks and also how do I get the powder sugar off my fondant after I roll it out for a cake board??
Hi Tru! I would recommend trying cornstarch instead of powdered sugar. What type of surface are you rolling your fondant on? To remove powder stains off of your cake, check out my tutorial on "How To Steam Cakes". :)
ok thank you so much Laura! I love all your tutorials.... they are always helpful
Mz.Ladyt Tru craft
Krazy Kool Cakes & Designs hello I plan to do this topper for my 1 year old. Can you tell me how to get to your gum paste tutorial please.
I recommend using a silicon mat to roll fondant on I don’t even use anything under fondant any more and that way it doesn’t even change the consistency of the fondant
Hello there, was wandering if you can use something other than the edible glue to keep it together?
+Stephanie Martinez HI Stephanie! The only other thing that will work (but not as well as edible glue) would be just water. :)
Hi, I like your tutorial and i like to know how can i get the shiny final? i saw the hat "Mate" but at the final was "Glossy or shiny". Tell me please. Thanks
Hi Alondrape! Please check out my steaming tutorial and it will teach you how to get your toppers shiny. :)
HOLA LAURA ME ENCANTAN TUS TUTORIAL!!!! PREGUNTO EL VAPOR NO ABLANDA EL GUMPASTE? EN PR ES MUY HUMEDO, GRACIAS
Hola Milly! Muchas gracias! :)
MUCHAS GRACIAS POR TU RESPUESTA, CREO QUE ENTONCES TODO DEPENDERA DEL CLIMA, APROVECHO PARA DECIRTE QUE ME ENCANTAN TUS VIDEOS HE APRENDIDO MUCHO CON ELLOS Y AUNQUE NO DOMINO EL INGLES LOS ENTIENDO MUY BIEN POR LO PAUSADO QUE LO HABLAS, MUCHAS BENDICIONES EXITO EN TU NEGOCIO!!!
Milly Romero Gracias Milly! Me da mucho gusto oír eso! Que bueno que disfrutas de mis tutoriales y que sientes que has aprendido con ellos! Gracias por ser tan linda! Dios te bendiga! :)
Thank you Traci! I think next time we'll be using a tripod. LOL. :) He was eating chocolates while making this video which is why it was so noisy. Hahaha! :)
Hi love, I have a question, after warming up my fondant, as I'm rolling it out, it breaks apart, any ideas why? I even added the stuff you used to make gumpaste! I feel like it lost all of its elasticity
Hi Mirna! It sounds like your gumpaste is too dry. Are you using old gumpaste? If not, I recommend spritzing it with water to get it very moist. Be sure not to use shortening at all as this causes it to crack and break even more. I hope that helps! :)
Krazy Kool Cakes & Designs awwww, thank you so much for responding. Yeah that totally makes sense, that's probably what happened, I was using shortening the whole time. I didn't realize it would do that, so now just spritz it water and that will repair it? Thank you so much again, you're amazing
It's PERFECTLY FINE for it to be styrofoam? No where is it written or set in stone that everything on a cake must be edible. LOL. It's YOUR cake, and you can put whatever you want on it. ESPECIALLY it's something like this that should and usually is kept as a keepsake. :) Hope that makes sense. :)
How far ahead could I make this? I will be making the bow also. My daughters birthday is end of May this year.
Thanks!!
Hi Anita, You could make it now if you'd like. It will be fine. :)
laurapoopie Great!! That makes my job easier :) Also were should I keep it? In the fridge?
Hi Laura, I'm writing from Peru, let me say that your tutorials are really amazing and very accurate, I use this video to make Mickey's head for the cake my baby who turned 1 year old, well actually I went with some imperfections but I learn so hahaha. Well I commented that I am initiating me into the business of cakes, I am sure that with God's help everything will be fine, anyway I'll keep watching your vidos because they are helpful, Laura I want to know what you use to paste the fondant on the head and on the edges, I'm sure you explain it in the vide, but I have a problem, I do not speak English and do not understand it, that hahahahahaha shame, so I use google translator. I would also like you to tell me how many days before I make Mickey's head and as I keep it to avoid damage, I hope you were able to explain me well, thank you very much in advance and I hope your answer soon. May God continue to fill you with blessings.
Hi Patricia! Thank you so much for your kind words! Glad you enjoy my tutorials. :) I used edible glue to stick the gumpaste on top to the gumpaste at the bottom. I have a tutorial on how to make edible glue if you'd like to check it out. It's tylose powder mixed with warm water. :) You can make the Mickey hat weeks even months in advance. :) I hope that helps Patricia! God bless you! :)
laurapoopie Hi Laura, I am infinitely grateful for the help, I'll see where the video teaching how to make glue. Take care and thanks.
Thanks! The silicone mat does not allow sticking. :)
