Glad you two discussed the progression and current state of compact discs. I absolutely agree and I'm glad I didn't buy too many remastered discs.
I'm currently listening to some orchestral discs from the Philips label manufactured in the early 1990's that sound really good. No fatigue.

The knowledge level here is really good In the studio my preferred Red Book mastering is an early 90's BURR Brown dual DAC Tascam mastering recorder that allows real time mastering with incredibly low error rates. The sound is gorgeous. This might sound daft, but even commercial CD's re-recorded to audiophile gold blanks sound superior to the originals. I have software that measures error rates, and the duplicates have on average 10x less read errors. Not sure if that's why they sound better, but must play a part. It only works this way if everything is fixed in the digital domain. Glass masters can be created from this setup.
I remember well those awful early 80's 14bit domestic CD players with over sampling technology. The CD' of that time (I still own many) were far superior to the players as stated here - never thought I'd actually hear someone else say that 👍
The Audio Note level 5 system is an incredibly high end replay system that's probably more expensive than many mid range independent commercial recording studios, many of which record to higher standards than some of the multi million pound studios I've visited.
Though studio equipment is incredibly good these days, its way behind high end replay systems such as ANL5 , though ultimately the source i.e. The recording is "key" to replay performance levels. Rubbish in rubbish out, as we say in the U.K.
    Cool review 👍

A lot of newer cd's has so much dynamic compression that it distorts the signal by about 60 %. I'm sometimes using a declipping tool add on for my wave editor. Just try ripping a cd and loading a track into the wave editor you realize that a lot of the signal is gone due to "The loudness war" (much worse than any mp3 file compression). Most of the times I have to turn down the signal by 60 % just to make headroom enough for the declipping tool to try restoring the dynamics (by using algorithms). The fact that most popular music is recorded that way today undermines in my view the hole point of buying any kind of hifi product in the first place. I don't understand why hifi companies in general seems to have a very relaxed attitude towards this issue. The music industry is taking away a lot of the potential buyers for hifi products. In my view hifi companies should stop attacking each other and instead work together stopping the abuse of music that the music industry is doing.

The amp stands remind me, I used to use Boo's Blocks cutting boards from William's and Sonoma as amp stands for my JC-1's I used to have. They worked perfectly well.

Audio note also makes kits and you can build the 04 speakers, interstage 300B C-core amps, Dac 5.1 Signature, and L5 mentor line pre-amp. For $22752 although without the power supply's and as much shielding but still a steal in my opinion.

Mitchell Clark no..that is not audio note that's behind the kit. They stopped working with kits a long time ago. And ANK is a company runned by Brian. Not audio note.
The only kits from audio note today is the speaker kits.

Can i also ask , as i cant suss it out , what is Peters opinion on the preferred medium ADAAD or ADD ? Were the earlier 80s cds ADD or ADAAD ?

16/44.1 PCM can sound quite good with NOS, R2R DACs. However the recording chain needs higher resolution because every processing step loses information.
